Rachel and I finished the first season of American Horror Story last night. That final episode was actually pretty fun.

Overall it's a... terrible show, but terrible in kind of an entertaining way. We'll move on to season 2 at some point but I think I want to watch something that's actually good.

Season 2 (Asylum) is about on par with season 1 in terms of absolute quality, but I thought the concept was more interesting and fun. Season 3 (Coven) is where the show hits its stride, and then season 4 (Freak Show) didn't do anything for me at all. I haven't watched Hotel yet. It sounds like it's better than seasons 2 and 4 at least.

We thought 2 was the best, 3 was the worst, 1 was ok and we couldn't even finish 4, there was just no focus and too many attempts at being "edgy". We haven't seen Hotel yet.

Man, I really enjoyed 3. I thought it was the only season to feel like good television. The story felt more coherent than the other seasons, the characters generally felt better, and I liked the setting better than the other seasons.

In terms of critical consensus, they rank as so from highest average review score to lowest: Season 3 (75)>Season 4 (69)>Season 2 (65)>Season 1 (62)>Season 5 (60).

Shadow Hunters lost its charm by the 4th episode. It doesn't have the batshit craziness that I love about a lot of the YA films that come out these days (alright, Divergent. It's not as good as Divergent which is one of the most entertaining films I've watched, and I'm psyched for the third one). But the characters aren't quite melodramatic enough, the world hasn't got much going for it, and the the villain isn't quite compelling or scenery chewing enough(he's probably going to get there, but didn't with what I watched).

We hated it. It was so scattered and un focused and silly. The ridiculous inclusion of Stevie Nix pretty much topped off the stupid. My stars I could just bitch about that season for days. There were some good parts; Frances Conroy was amazing but everyone else was average, annoying, or infinitely repeating their stock character.

critical consensus can kiss my hairy white butt.

Most of what seemed to make the books unique has been kinda mellowed out so that everyone is just always super glamorous and standing around in shitty nightclubs and fancy apartments. Which is kinda funny, but not by the end of it.

Is there any reason I couldn't just watch the X-Files episode from last week everyone liked so much just out of the blue

I've only ever seen one other episode of the show and it was the Bryan Cranston one

Nope, it's a Monster of the Week episode with no connection to the larger mythology. There are a few little jokes that call back to themes/tropes in older episodes but they're minor and still amusing even if you're only passingly familiar with the X-Files.

Here's the problem with Scream Queens. It's not, despite the name, an Adventure Time spinoff.

Is Scream Queen an Adventure Time thing?

Because I'm pretty sure it's been a term used in horror cinema for longer

To give you an indication as to how long the term has been in play, the first one was Fay Wray

Really? I didn't actually know it went back that far.

I always think of Jamie Lee Curtis as the first one (for Laurie Strode in Halloween), who also kind of originated the whole Final Girl thing.

It loses something if you're not familiar with Mulder's character or some of the series in jokes but its still pretty good

That does literally nothing to my enthusiasm

If you had asked me about Star Treks like five minutes ago I strongly doubt I would have even been able to come up with the word Voyager

As I said, I do not (or did not previously perhaps) care about Star Trek

It won't keep me from the show, but it does temper my enthusiasm. It could very well turn out amazing as the dude has done some cool stuff. He even wrote some interesting DS9 episodes. That doesn't take away his involvement with that tragedy of a series though so my expectations adjust accordingly. Its bound to be better than the new movie series though so I am fairly excited.

My roommates have been marathoning Scream Queens all day

I've only been watching it tangentially as I pass through the living room, and I'm nonetheless pretty confident in calling it the worst (scripted) television show of the past five years.

I found it pretty funny at first, but my body can only generate a certain amount of snark. And that amount is a small amount.

Having enjoyed Jessica Jones, and this thread's recommendations on Better Off Ted turning out really well, my wife and I had added Don't Trust the B in Apartment 23 to our Netflix queue a while back and finally got to starting it over the past week.

We're really enjoying it and are over halfway through, but we just hit an episode that made us realize these episodes are hella out of order (there were small things that didn't add up before, but we just chalked it up to writer miscommunication or lack of proper editing or whatever, but then this episode clearly just did not belong where it was). Fortunately we found a list online so we can watch the remainder in order.

I wonder how Netflix determines what order to put things up in? This show is up in the order that it aired on TV, but the only other show I could remember that aired out of order but is also on Netflix was Firefly, and they have it in the correct order.

Also I'm very curious if the show was pitched with the idea that they'd have James Van Der Beek, or if they just had generic celebrity jokes that they tailored to him after he was cast.

I'm pretty sure Arrested Development is out of order on Netflix-- it doesn't affect too much, but if you're a purist you would want to look up the correct order

Only thing I remember not making sense is Tobias is in jail (which they do explain why in the episode), but then a later ep has him come up with the idea to go to jail
