You keep your eyes on the news broadcast on your office's muted television set as you reach for a fax that just printed out of one of the newest pieces of hardware to be installed on the base. Private line. You know the gist of what you're about to read before your eyes ever meet the paper.

Admiral,

Effectively immediately, you have reassigned to acting director of Nimbus operations. Transportation is en route; expect liaison contact for departure by 0600Z. You will be informed of mission parameters and objectives on a need to know basis.

Ultranormal assets have been activated. Ultranormal OPFOR is anticipated.

Pursuant to the Black Clause of Ultranormal Counter-Incursion Resolution Article 7, you are hereby gagged. Disclosure of activities undertaken as acting director of Nimbus operations is punishable under international law as a crime against humanity.

The message rapidly decays; by the time you've read it, the ink is already nearly illegible and the substrate resembles a soggy cracker. You look at the television; firefighters dig through rubble while a field reporter works to build a human interest piece. Known quantities.

There is a knock at your office.

What do you do?

1) Walk over to the door & answer
2) Tell whomever is at the door to come inside
3) Tell your visitor that now isn't a good time
4) Be silent; refuse to answer the door

With Love and Courage

I don't know if this is going to be giant tanks fighting kaiju (oh, sorry, "UMOs") or giant robots fighting kaiju.
Either way, I think I'm in.
Let's go get some kaiju blood on our hands.

Edit: Okay, I suppose it might be regular old human troops fighting Kaiju with airplanes or normal sized tanks, but I don't think either of those when I see Ender post a CYOA.

You walk over to the door, pausing for just a moment to rinse the residue of the fax off of your hands.

You open the door; the faces of Nimbus Special Agents Campbell and Lauren are instantly recognizable.

"Those disguises are terrible. And the message said 0600."

Neither Agent scowls or smirks in response. Something really is wrong, then.

"The situation is developing rapidly, admiral. We need you to come with us now. The helicopter is idling on the pad."

The agent offers you a sealed folder with classified materials markings.

    What do you do?

    1) Take the folder & follow the agents
    2) Take the folder and refuse to follow the agents right now
    3) Tell the agents to come back at 0600 and go back to watching TV

    Let's go to the helicopter.

    "Well, lead the way then,"

You take the folder, then turn the master knob on your wall panel to 'vacation', killing the lights and television. Despite your best efforts, there is no banter on the way to the helipad.

The chopper a sleek & black civilian machine; you find yourself buckling into an elegant sofa - a pleasant change from the jump seats you've come to associate with helicopter rides. You're airborne almost as soon as you've sat down.

You break the seal on the folder and begin reading through it's contents.

    "...These are commission papers."

"Yes sir. That's your new daughter, director. You like her?"

You lose yourself momentarily in a wide angle photograph taped to the cover flap of the folder, idly tracing your finger around the border.

Going for the one that looks like the biggest gun.

@The Ender could you clarify the "special munitions" die a bit so we can make a bit more tactical choice? Like, Menshikov lets you "roll any number of Special Munitions dice" while the others can only roll one. What is that munition dice connected to. And what is a data link (a resource we build, something that modifies attacks, other?).

    No problem.

Special Munitions are a resource that you may expend to either activate your HQ ship's special ability (as listed) or gain action economy for some of your units during battles. Data Links are a resource you expend during battles to make your dice more effective; you'll be using D6s for attack & defense, and normally you'll only get a success by rolling a 5 or 6 - but you can spend a Data Link to have a die that shows a 3 or 4 count as a success.

Data Links are generated during battles by certain units, while Special Munitions are a commodity that you can have shipped-out to your HQ & stockpiled.

Think I'll vote for the Shear.
The Admiral Menshikov seems like too big of a gamble, you toss any number of Special Munition dice and if none of them come up 5 or 6, they're just gone, presumably with no affect. Those don't seem like good odds. If they failed back into a dice pool or something, I'd like it better, but to just throw away a resource is a bad idea.

With The U.S.S. Shear you only risk a single SM die and might get lucky with a 6 die hit, or might be unlucky and only get a 1 dice hit. Either way though, you're still attacking.

That said, data links look helpful if they can change bad dice to good dice. The KJK was a close second.

@The Ender , what are the quantities of Special Munition dice that we can accrue? Are these going to be very limited where we only have a handful (5-6) at a time, or are we looking at dozens in our stockpile?
Same question for Data Links? Is there a limit to the number of Data Links that can be spent per round? Like, could we only change one dice from a 4 to a 5, or are we only limited by supply?

Edit: Also: Hunting vs Naval action? Details please?

    see317 on

I'm guessing hunting is for any target while naval action is for naval targets.

Special Munitions are a common commodity resource; there is a worker placement shipping phase of the game where you can choose to grab whatever commodities you'd like, and common commodities are limited only by the number of workers at your disposal (at the beginning of the game you'll have access to 3 workers and 1 Special Munitions die).

Hunting actions are combat operations against UMOs. Naval actions are combat operations against hostile naval forces (Hunting actions are offensive, while naval actions are defensive).

    Toss up between 3 and 4 .
1 and 2 can only use their ability when attacking.
3 can only use its ability when defending.
4 can use its ability whenever, so its probably a better all-round choice, although keeping our civilians safe with 3 would be good too...

"...The Kazunori. She's a super submersible."

    "Yes, sir."

"Well, with a face like that she's not going to be bringing any boys home. I love her already."

You close the folder and let it rest in your lap.

"...So are we going to be doing a joint operation with the other super subs, then? I presume we're bringing everything online."

    Agent Campbell's eye visibly twitches.

"That was the initial plan, but we're run into some procedural complications along the way. Activating Nimbus has not been a smooth process. For the foreseeable future, operations will be centered solely around the Kazunori and her escort fleet..."

You lock eyes for a moment.

    "Procedural complications?"

"Yes, sir. I honestly do not know more than you do right now, director; just relaying the facts I've been told."

You have a feeling that this isn't exactly true, but decide to drop it for the moment.

"Well, ain't that always the way of it. Who stepped-up to roll out the bank for us this time, anyway?"

    Some important notes about mechanics:
The shipping manifest is a sheet of personnel & materiel that will track what is available for you to take as supplies. Putting a coin on an item means a unit of it is available for taking.

Trade embargoes are events that can occur randomly in the game. An embargo freezes your ability to acquire anything from the shipping manifests & removes all coins from the manifests.

Cities add items to shipping manifests & are a possible vector for losing the game. Each city can either be a committed (adding items to the shipping manifest), shattered (unable / unwilling to add items to the shipping manifest) or extinguished (razed to the ground). If half of a country's cities become extinguished or all of it's cities become shattered, that country will cease to be a Nimbus donor. If 2 or more countries cease to be donors, the game is lost.

Strange objects are drops that you may acquire from defeating UMOs. Normally these drops are completely random.

The Eater of Kings, Hangman's Noose, Winter's End and Pale Horse are special command vehicles that you may use when conducting Hunting actions. They require fissile material to use as fuel; normally you do not start with any fuel for these vehicles.

The U.S.S. South Dakota, U.S.S. Henry Ford and U.S.S. Henry Jackson are special escort fleet elements that may be used in Naval actions. Normally these ships begin the game docked & require substantial preparation to get underway.

Taxing your ship's reactor weakens it's output; this output determines the number of actions you may take each day. Increasing it's output requires fissile materiel. You begin the game with the reactor at full output levels.

Looks like the Russian vehicles just need to be fueled up, but the USA ships are all docked and (I'd guess) in mothballs, so they require more work to get them active if we don't go USA.

Okay so we can put 6 coins on shipping manifest A or B to buy 6 of anything.

    Quick Questions:

Can we buy 1 of anything including the slayers stuff?

Can we use the slayers now or do we need to research that later?

Do we have enough crew right now?

Can we buy and use fissile materials to activate the Eater of Kings or the other Russian super-weapons?

What do the numbers in the triangles represent? Edit: Oh I get it, that is the random roll result.

Depending on the answers, my choices would be:

    Service team

    Frame pilot candidate

    Hyper sonic Combat Frame

Super Heavy Tank (because we need a tank in a The Ender game even if it also has a sub)

    Slayer Candidate

    Dragon's Egg

    Exo Skeleton Team

    Spec Ops team

    Fissile material

    Yes.
Can we use the slayers now or do we need to research that later?

You can use them immediately; that will happen at a later phase in the day.
Do we have enough crew right now?

Right now you have 3 full staffed crews, represented by the 3 dice on the appropriate space of the Kazunori. These crews can be moved to the Assigned Crews space at later phases of the day to do different things (including moving items from the shipping manifest onto more active spaces).

You can get more crew if you wish, which will enable to you do more things per day (you will cap out at 6 total crew, though).
Can we buy and use fissile materials to activate the Eater of Kings or the other Russian super-weapons?

    Yes.
What do the numbers in the triangles represent?

Those numbers are used during days when random selection of shipped items is taking place; a d20 is rolled for each city shipping a random item, and a coin is then placed on corresponding materiel.

    3x Crew
    Frame Pilot Candidate
    Hypersonic Combat Frame
    Super Heavy Tank

Max out the crew early. I get the feeling that the flexibility of a full crew is going to be really important for the KJK.
And having the crew filled out now seems like it will help us take on more cargo faster in the future, so I'm hoping it'll work to our advantage in the long run.
Combat frame and pilot, seems like a good idea to have both. While I'm not sure what a "Frame" is in this setting, I am a fan of the words "Hypersonic" and "Combat".

And I can't really fault Void Slayer's evaluation regarding the need for a super heavy tank.

And yes, you will need a crew to receive candidates.
