Every year since 2004
@mcc has done a fantastic Game of the Year poll on this forum. People seem to enjoy it when it happens so she's tried to keep doing it. Last year she decided to bow out for various understandable reasons but kindly provided the scripts for us to run it ourselves, which we did thanks to
@infidel. Much fun was had and a few people have asked if it's going to happen again. Thankfully Infidel has kindly agreed to host it which just leaves getting the nomination list together.
There are a lot of Game of the Year polls out there, but this one is special. Where most GOTY polls just give you a list of maybe five of the best-selling games from the last year, and ask you to choose your favorite, THIS poll gives you a list of EVERY game that came out in the last year (more or less) and asks you to vote for [up to] your top 20-- ranked by how much you liked them. Here's last year's poll if you want to see how this works. We actually wind up with a serviceable ranking of the top hundred or so games from the last year, with blockbusters, obscurities and cult hits mixed in side by side, and a pretty color-coded graph.
Here's the plan: We're taking nominations in this thread until the evening of January 18th. Date is flexible, I can't remember how much time we've given in previous years.
We'll then run the poll for one week, until the evening of January 25th. I'll post a thread back here (watch for it!) with the voting link.
So, let's get some nominations. Remember, the point of this is to have the most comprehensive list of games possible! So any game that anyone might POSSIBLY put in their top 20 deserves to go on the list.
The rules for nomination are:
* It must have been legally released IN AMERICA for the first time in 2015
* It must be a new game-- no ports, no expansion packs.
We can try to be flexible about these rules. But here's the underlying point of the rules: Every game gets one shot. Think about it, if this game you like got on one year, and then we snuck its expansion pack on the next year… half the people who liked it will vote one year and half the other and it will get really low scores. You like this game, but it's gonna get stiffed in the poll. Avoid that.
I made a starting list ripped off of wikipedia to get use going. This will very likely contain titles that shouldn't be on there, I'll be making attempts myself to remove these over the next few days but please feel free to inform me of any you spot. I'll be honest, I've mostly stuck to WiiU and PS4 this year so PC titles will elude me.
Working nominations list in next post. Also last year we had some discussions about episodic content, when should something be added to the list. I THINK the consensus was that it should go in the year where the final episode is released. Again, rules are flexible, this is meant to be fun not something to fight over.

Suggestions for expanded platforms on existing entries:
AeternoBlade (3DS, PSVita)
Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below (PC, PS3, PS4)
Pillar (PC, PS4, XBO)
Primal Carnage: Extinction (PC, PS4)
Red Goddess: Inner World (PC, PS4)
We Are Doomed (PC, PS4, XBO)
Also, regarding Dream Runners (PS4) - I couldn't find a game with exactly this name, so I'm assuming it should be Giana Sisters: Dream Runners (PC, PS4, XBO)?
The game may have been 26 years old, but 2015 was its first release in the states
Borderlands Handsome Collection (is just BL2 and BL:Pre-Sequel!)
Far Cry 4 (2014)
Skyshine's Bedlam (PC)
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC (PC, PSP) - First English release was in October. I assume we'll omit the PSP release, because it was a PSP release in 2015, but it did also come to the PC.
Removals:
Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros Edition - Outside of Japan, I'm pretty sure this is only available in the bundle with Z. Could be wrong. Either way, I don't think we need two entries for it.
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
That said, I'm betting it's missing a ton of indie games released on steam, so if you want to vote for something then please suggest it!

I really hope none are on there already. I did my best to check for every addition, but sometimes I thought if the odds were low enough I didn't bother.
Here are a few potential additions that I think need a second opinion before going on the list:
ECZEMA ANGEL ORIFICE (PC) - an anthology collection, some of the games within have featured on previous polls. Inclination: no
PICO-8 (PC) - this is an entire fantasy console with a library of games by numerous different authors, and it's difficult to decide whether to break them up, and if so, which games to include (besides Ennuigi). It's a little similar to Super Mario Maker, which should definitely just be listed as one game, or flickgame and plingpling which I have decided to count as one game in my list above. Anyone familiar with PICO-8 should chime in.
Princess Remedy In a World of Hurt (PC) - technically released in 2014, but missed out on last year's list. Inclination: yes
The Jackbox Party Pack 2 (PC, PS3, PS4, XBO) - another compilation that's probably not worth breaking up. Inclination: yes
Also, maybe King's Quest Episodes 1 & 2 should be taken off the list. It can go on next time as a single entry when all the episodes are out?
EDIT: added a few more entries, removed flickgame while I attempt to prepare a list just for notable flickgames.
And even if it were, it's not a new game.
I've got plenty that can be removed:
Adventures of Pip (WiiU) - Duplicate
AeternoBlade (PSVita) - Duplicate
Agarest: Generations of War 2 - Port
Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed - Port
Chariot (WiiU) - Port
Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition (PC, PS4, XBO) - Re-release

We Are Doomed (PS4) - Duplicate
WWE 2K15 (PC) - Port
Xenoblade Chronicles 3D (N3DS, NN3DS) - Port
Zombi (PC, PS4, XBO) - Port
But only one to be added:
Submerged (PS4, XBO, PC)
I just realised I'm not going to have 20 games to vote for, since the PS4 versions of The Fall and Vanishing of Ethan Carter are ineligible. Annoying. I guess I could add Game of Thrones as a 19th but my list has standards so that's not an option.
Please Don't Touch Anything (PC, Mobile)
Evoland 2 (PC)
Some games to be removed:
Chivalry (port)
Dead or Alive 5 (port)
Elite: Dangerous (port)
Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- (port)
Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R (port)
Hitman Go (port)
Hitman: Sniper (released in 2014 as far as I can tell)

PixelJunk Shooter (port)

RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 (port)
Smite (port)
Sonic Lost World (port)
State of Decay: Year-One Survival Edition (re-release)
The Elder Scrolls Online (port)
Warhammer Quest (port)
Way of the Samurai 4 (port)
And one I'm not sure about:
Proun+ (Proun was released a few years ago on PC, but I'm not sure if this is an oddly named sequel or a re-release)
Steam: MightyPotatoKing
Umihara Kawase (PC, Vita)
Umihara Kawase Shun (PC)
Mobile stuff:
Rust Bucket (iOS, Android)
Attack the Light: Steven Universe (iOS, Android)
Soda Dungeon (iOS, Android)
I'm pretty familiar with PICO-8; it's definitely not a game. It's a retro-styled platform for building games; Mario Maker is basically a (really nice) level editor; PICO-8 is coding and graphics and level editing and music composition, etc. Think SmileBASIC. Platform limitations mean that PICO-8 games have a familiar style, but the amount of work it takes to build stuff on the thing can be non-trivial (I have a cart I've worked on for over a month). Also, as a platform, we're going to see neat games built on this thing for years to come, and I'd like to be able to vote for them individually in future ballots.
The most notable PICO-8 titles so far (IMHO) have been Celeste, Ennuigi, and Dusk Child. There's a lot of other carts that are impressive as things that run on PICO-8, but these three games are things that I'd play even if I didn't care about the PICO-8 community.
Yeah, I wanted PICO-8 to be one game so I could think of all the cool things made with it but have it only take up one spot on my list, but I realise now that's not very fair. Break it up! I'm now thinking I probably ought to break up flickgame as well, but there are a lot of amazing flickgames so this will be tough for me. plingpling should probably still just be one, though.
Anyway, I'd definitely agree the three games you mentioned should be included on the list. They match exactly with the three I would have chosen. But I'm still interested if you personally think any of the following might also be notable enough for inclusion: Across The River, Endless Train, Frog Home, PAT Shooter, Rainmaker, Shodo (is it even a game), Tea, The Stroll, or The Tower of Archeos?
Same thing goes with King's Quest and Minecraft: Story Mode.
Dreamfall Chapters was on the 2014 list, but maybe shouldn't have been? Sometimes when the release of an episodic game stretches over 3+ years (such as Kentucky Route Zero) there's merit in listing its individual parts. But in this case I agree that maybe it should be skipped this time, then get relisted when it's complete.
Broken Age Act 2 is a similar example that is currently on the list, but in that case I think it should stay there... mostly because it will be interesting to see how many places it drops.

As a general rule, I've always felt that we should stick to episodic packages going on the list when the final episode is out, 'package' being a key word. There's a lot of weird cases, though, and we should probably have conversations about anything that isn't completely clear cut.
I don't have any fucking idea what to do about Broken Age. I didn't play it. My gut says that it was funded as a single package and is sold as a single package, and it should've been off last year's list and on this year's. I don't remember what conversation lead to it being included last year, so I could be way off the mark there.

I mention Forza Horizon 2 F&F again because while I'm fine with standalone expansions counting (no problem with Starcraft being on there), I think they need to add a significant amount of content and by all the accounts I heard, this was basically just a demo that used the Fast & Furious license to spread the word.
I'm sure I missed some stuff (especially Japan only games and PC ports), so it still needs a bit of work to filter these games out.
And today ph blake learned to always open spoilers when using ctrl+f, whoops.
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
My understanding of Yatagarasu is that the original version came out in Japan in 2011, it was then both licensed by Nicalis to port over to 3DS (which changed to Vita and finally to Vita/PS4/Xbone) and partially localised and sold by a British online store. As that was going on, the devs funded a new version of the game using Indiegogo, Attack on Cataclysm, promising online functionality, new characters and a full localisation. A bit of a mess, really. I'd count it as a new game, even if just because it's the first time it's been properly localised.
