Yeah SniperGuy, that's the sort of situation that definitely calls for regular and persistent calls to the police.
Homeless people need places to sleep, yes, but that doesn't give them the right to enter private property. With any luck, there are shelters available to them, particularly if it is cold outside (at least, that's the general response up here - more temporary shelter beds become available in cold weather).
I keep going into my apartment's laundry room and finding people sleeping. This morning I left to go to work and there was a homeless guy sleeping outside the door in my apartment hallway. The exterior doors of my apartment are supposed to lock automatically, but often catch and don't close all the way. We were told when viewing that it's a "Secure building." Residents actually chain the door open because they are lazy and don't want to use their key (presumably, I haven't caught anyone doing it). I've called the Property Management company and they refer me to the building manager, who has never answered. I've left two messages and even called the police to get people removed. But I feel like a real dick about it because it's cold outside but on the other hand I have been yelled at by crazy meth addled homeless people in this neighborhood and I once found a guy sleeping under our mailslots. Which greatly worries me about any packages that might go missing. I feel like there have to be better places for these people to take shelter or something, right? Plus, my girlfriend now has to leave past a potentially unstable guy in the hallway too which concerns me. She has asked me to escort Any ideas? I'm going to call the property people again today but this is just so tiring. Am I being an asshole here? I haven't ever had this issue before and I genuinely don't know.
You pay for security it should be enforced period.
Yup, tell them that this is unacceptable.
Sniper, you might have to have them break your lease though, because they probably don't want to pay for security to patrol all night long.
At very least they need to make sure their doors properly lock.
Yeah something easy might just be removing the chain and get a really super heavy door that can't really be kept open by anything. Then putting cameras in the foyers of these buildings and reprimanding tenants who keep it open with books and shit.

Yeah, that's a tough situation. There used to be a (maybe) homeless guy that lived in our neighborhood? I would often have to step over him on my stoop or walk past him sleeping on other stoops. During the day, he would hang out with the locals and I would often see him coming out of other apartments. If he wasn't homeless, he definitely had a rough home life.
One time I found him sleeping in our stairwell right outside our door. While it was risky, I told him he had to leave. He just acted like he was sleeping and ignored me. I told him again, and that I was trying to be cool about it and didn't want to have to call the cops or anything. I waited a few minutes, then went inside my apartment and he got up and left.

In the few weeks that I slept outside (that is, not in a shelter), I either
a) Slept outside in Dundas Square or Nathan Phillips Square (if the weather was good - the security would hassle you sometimes, but usually you could just walk around the block and come back and return to your spot for another hour or so before security came around again).
b) Caught cat-naps in 24 hour McDonald's and Tim Hortons (they were especially accommodating if you bought at least something - thank you dollar menu)
c) Given I was carrying a large bag anyway, train and bus stations were great places to catch sweet, sweet naps (security would eventually approach you here too, but this was usually the best way to get 2 or 3 uninterrupted hours sometimes!)
d) The University of Toronto campus is huge and ill-secured. That is all. >_>
In my post on-the-streets days I found even better places to possibly sleep, but by then the information was less useful to me :P
If I was going to be a homeless person, I'd probably walk my way south and 'camp' instead of chill out on the streets and stuff.
No reason to suffer frigid temperatures if you can chill out near Miami for the same price of being broke.
This is a good post-apocalypse strategy, but most homeless people still have connection to the city in which they live - a kid that lives with an ex, a job, etc.

Yeah if that's the case it'd be difficult.
I'd probably leave just because seeing me like that, or, me knowing they're seeing me like that would be enough I'd rather spare them.
If the job was worth it I wouldn't be homeless eh?

You think water just comes from the sky or something?
No, it comes from these 12oz plastic bottles from a fridge that magically gets restocked every night.
Seriously I am absolutely helping to destroy the environment. Sorry environment.
The devil is in the details.

But but but my blistex tube says it's medicated. Is Big Chapstick lying to me?
some of my crust punk friends that are homeless basically do this
but they hop trains and hitchhike more than walk
Yeah if that's the case it'd be difficult.
