Some important notes/tips from PA posters to help smooth out your initial Wii U experience.
1) Improving Wifi performance
-- It looks like the WII U has some issues with DHCP and automatic configuration of wifi. If you know how, manually enter your IP information into the Wii U, setting the IP Address, Subnet, and gateway to match your DHCP settings but in an area that the modem isn't giving out (up around 240-250 is usually safe). Then manually set DNS - if you don't know it, use 8.8.8.8 (google's DNS). This allowed things to work much better for me.
2) Opting in to friend requests must be done before you can receive friend requests. Do this by hitting the Home button, tapping on Friend List orange button on the left, tap on Settings, enable friend requests.
3) Why the Friends Lists are like they are:
--I wouldn't be surprised if the Miiverse servers really are integral to the Wii U's experience, and timeouts were what was causing the lag.
--Also, I think I've figured out how friend invites work, and why there are 2 different ways to enter them.
--Miiverse: Social integration. You have to opt in to allow friend requests on Miiverse (which at least 4 people in the OP haven't done, *cough cough*) . If you allow friend requests in that, then you'll get notifications when people add you through it, which can be due to profile posts or from playing with other people or all that jazz.
--If, however, you don't want the world to be able to add you, you can just have friends add you via mutual NNID exchange. This is where someone puts in your NNID into their console, and you are not informed about it... But if you put their NNID in as well, then voila! You have each other as friends. (This is how I added the 4 people in the OP who didn't have their friend requests turned on).
--So basically, Nintendo's created two avenues to add friends that are NOT mutually exclusive and can be used as a gatekeeper. If you want the world to be your friend, awesome! If you don't want the world up in your grill but you still want the ability to add friends, awesome! If you want the whole world to leave you alone, go for it.
4) The home button takes a screen shot. Once the home menu is up, you can jump to the miiverse and post it in a comment there. If you don't post it, it's gone as soon as you go back to the game, to be replaced with a new one next time you hit Home.
5) Game updates can be downloaded in the background. If you click the "Start Game" button it will begin background downloading. Then you can do whatever you want while the game update downloads. I don't know if it specifically downloads while you are in the game you're downloading for, but it definitely does if you quit out of it. There is also a "Download Manager" app on the Home button where you can see what it's doing with the downloads.
Do not get attached to this thread.
At some point after the Wii U launches (probably after the first holiday season), the thread will be retired. Okay, at this point it's obvious the Wii U Thread has gotten a stay of execution. This is because the system is doing terribly and there'd be practically no Wii U talk without this thread. Do not point to this thread if we decide to shut down the mega thread for some other console. Instead, take solace in knowing your hardware isn't struggling to beat the PS Vita in sales each month. Having said that, the mod staff reserves the right to shut this thread down whenever it deems fit. Especially if behavior becomes routinely toxic.
I'd like this note in every future Wii U thread.

I love my Wii U it gets the most play out of my consoles at the moment (PS3, PS4, Xbone, Wii U)
Right now i'm getting through Twilight Princess HD and having an absolute blast, it's a wonderfully designed game (especially after playing Skyward Sword....)

Edit: On that note, does anyone have Lego Avengers? Is the DLC packs (Ant-Man, Agents of Shield, etc) available on the Wii U version, or is it left out like some of the previous Lego games on the Wii U?

You heard it here first. The next console will be the Nintendo E.
Not for a while. We just had one.
It would be premature to say that, in the present day, and at the present time.
we'll accept your card at the door on your way out
So in this analogy is the WiiU throwing itself off a school roof? I am remembering how Lain starts correctly, no?
...and in an actual WiiU question:
I have a 32GB model that has Splatoon, Fatal Frame and Nintendoland installed, leaving me not enough room to download Disney Infinity 1.0. If I plug in a cheap USB drive, can I download DI to that external and still play the games on the internal memory, or does plugging in an external drive block access to the internal storage? Where will save files be written afterwards?
I know that flash drives aren't recommended but I've seen plenty of anecdotal reports that they work and it's mostly a hey, play cheap DI 1.0 playsets thing.
Thanks for anyone who can sort out my confusedness.
Of course you can still play anything that's on the console's internal storage. Why wouldn't you?
All data for a game (saves, DLC, etc.) is always kept in the same location, so if you download a game to an external flash drive, then that's where the saves for that game will be as well.
Thanks, I agree that it SHOULD be common sense, but I have been burned too many times by common sense.
The real solution, I'm a little sheepish to admit, was to buy the disc version of the DI software at GameStop for $2.69, which is even cheaper than plugging in a flash drive. Even with that, it's good to have a better understanding of how external storage works, so the explanation is much appreciated.
Now to wait for Lego Jurassic World to go down more before I grab it.

Apparently they came out about it directly. 3D printers are a wonderful thing.
And you can't develop anything for the 2nd screen, needing to accommodate people who are only playing on one screen. Making the 2nd screen useless.

I have beat Rygar on the NES and many of you have not.
God I hope not
I feel like that idea already came and went and nobody gave a shit about it
It's like no, thanks, I don't need a Pip Boy on my phone for item management, turns out the game has a pause screen
And that pretty much sums up how I feel about the last decade of Nintendo dual-screen BS.
That's also been a decade of not having to deal with pausing the game every time you want to see the details of anything. Fire Emblem went from a dying series to a successful one for a reason. That's not actually that reason, but it does feel so nice.
Dual screen is awesome idea, and it works really well if the dev is arsed to do something with it. I hate pausing the game to access inventory or other stuff, second screen has been great for maps and all that. I don't also like minimaps, especially in RPGs.
I on the other hand have trouble going back to single screen portables. Like, I try to play puzzle quest, which I originally played on DS, on a tablet, and I basically go "ugh".

I wish I could use tilt aiming in Twilight Princess without the shitshow inventory management.
The gamepad doesn't work as well because the controller is in your lap.
Remember that this is the same industry that embraced dual stick controls for first person shooters. Whether something is good has very little to do with whether it becomes universally used.
