So far every television news report I've encountered is calling it a 'nightclub shooting', making absolutely no mention of the fact it was a gay club, and speculating a ton about how Muslim the shooter probably is while not speculating at all about whether this was a homophobic hate crime

MSNBC has sort of intermittently mentioned it as a gay club.

e: and then they also had a terrorism expert on talking about how common it is for homosexuals to be stoned/beheaded in arabic nations

I wasn't aware that it's used as a convenient way for the right to ignore gun control, I am British and trying to become better educated in these things so I can discuss it without making a prat of myself

Nobody is pro murder spree except actual murderers. Cmon man.

People who fantasize about fighting off home invaders or gangs or whatever with the awesome might of their guns are absolutely pro murder spree, they just frame it as 'self-defense'. And there are a huge number of those kind of fantasists on the anti-gun-control side of the debate.

Those mighty prayers everyone keeps sending would probably stop being sent if they knew they were going to LGBT people

One of the most annoying things about the pro-murder spree side of the gun control argument is that anytime someone brings up gun control methodology that has been successfully implemented in another country, the response is "that wouldn't work here because we're different".
Yeah America's different, you guys keep getting slaughtered by gun-weilding arseholes on a regular basis!
If only proven effective measures would be tried in the USA before being dismissed out of hand because "mah gunz! Ah needs mah gunz!"

Exceptionalism is a poisonous cultural mentality anywhere, and ironically America isn't unique in that

But it is a place where it is a particular favourite of regressive politicians to resist change that is visibly and demonstrably working elsewhere.

    "Yeah, sure, but in America..."

Gun control, single-payer healthcare, police militarisation, up until recently gay marriage

These are things that most first world countries have kinda sorted out and gotten on the same page with. And these problems keep fucking Americans over. But every time you point at Canada, Australia, and most of Europe and go "well it's working fine there, more or less" with several variations to choose from, the response from regressives is to kick the dirt, put their hands in their pockets, shrug and say "shucks, that may be fine and dandy over there for them folks but here in America..." and then they just sorta trail off without having a real argument.

It was a gay nightclub having specifically a Latin@ Pride celebration so. It is quite possible that there's a racial element too, that is generally not being mentioned

Islamic fascism is a security blanket to allow individuals to keep individuals from having to realize their own populations are as capable of committing terrorism.

Sadly, this proves the danger of the lone wolf that the fbi tried to warn the right about.

My whole family is Christian, and I live in rural Georgia (and would leave if I could afford it). It's taken for granted that homosexuality is evil because the Bible says so.

My friends who are gay didn't come out until after they went to college for fear of persecution. I've never seen any proof that being gay is harmful in any way. The only negative is discrimination against them by the religious.

I doubt this event will have any impact on gun control, but I hope it makes some people question their belief in the immorality of homosexuality.

EDIT: I failed to take into account that news outlets aren't clearly mentioning that the victims were patrons at a gay nightclub. I wonder why?

Was this person on the FBI watch list? I see a lot of people tweeting about the bill that would have prohibited firearms sales to people on the list.

The deep cynic in me let out one of those Edna Krabapple "Ha!" noises at this idea.

There have been rumblings about that, but I don't know if there's been anything confirmed.

There's a direct line to be drawn between the deliberate whipping up of homo- and trans-phobia via bathroom bills and such, and these attempts at large scale violence.

No. He was a security guard and had a license to carry. He was being investigated for some crime though. Not been said what that is yet.

We were just about to head out and maybe hit up the Pride parade but I don't know if we'll be stopping by, now. Especially since the girlfriend's car still has Indiana plates on it (and so did the dude with the guns/bomb).

They've lifted the ban on gay people donating blood in Florida, because they're critically low on blood. No word as to if someone might actually change that ass-backwards policy nationally

I don't ever want to hear any asshole saying that Trans people using a public bathroom is dangerous ever again. I didn't want to hear that bullshit in the first place, but if I hear it now I won't be able to control my reaction.

    Fuck everything about this massacre.

sadly reminded that it takes a mass shooting to call attention to hate crimes aimed at sexual and gender minorities

and even then, networks are reluctant to mention that this was a gay nightclub

I wish I could tell my LGBT friends to be safe if they go out to Pride today (or anywhere in general), but I don't think we have enough swat gear for all of them to wear at such short notice.

Most of them can't... because MENA culture and customs severly prohibits any sort of LGBT outreach or lifestyle.

I don't know what I expected opening this thread. Or maybe I did and just hoped to be surprised. And maybe I'm just a little sensitive, but I think it's insanely offensive to - before even the authorities know all the details - to start drawing absolute lines between this shooting and "that conservative thing over there." Reminds me of when Congresswoman Giffords got shot and OF COURSE it was related to "that re-election map with the crosshairs over there!"

50 plus Americans of an already vulnerable demographic are dead, and we just can't help but jockying for our favorite partisan positions.

I didn't know "lets stop hating on gays in a way that gets them killed enmass" was an offensive stance

  • UnbreakableVowUnbreakableVow Registered User regular
The only "conservative thing over there" I'm gonna point to is that this sort of act is repeatedly done with weapons that are easily purchasable

And I would not stop with that sentiment in the wake of a terrible tragedy - indeed, it seems like the best time for it

Wait too long and people forget about it

Until the next time it happens, in which case silencers would try to say "let's not talk about that just yet, have some respect for the dead"

How about we try to prevent the dead
