That is a pretty spectacular mispronunciation, I gotta say.
I've got the opposite problem these days, if I am not paying attention I'll say Japanese works with the Japanese pronunciation, which really throws people off with established brands like Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, etc.
Over the weekend at the boardgame con I kept pronouncing house Kurita like you would in Japan, but, everyone who plays Battletech says Kur-ree-tah. So it kept confusing people.
How is it pronounced in Japan? More emphasis on the first syllable?
"More emphasis on the first syllable" is generally a good guess in Japanese, but the big thing is that Japanese vowels are actually crazy consistent so even if you've never heard a word pronounced you definitely know how the vowels are pronounced.

Yeah, the only occasional weirdness are the blends (like Ryu) and that sometimes something like "ai" is pronounced as a blend and sometimes as two separate sounds. Things like dropping the U sound if it appears at the end of the word are almost 100% consistent. But for the most part once you know how to pronounce like, 20 Japanese words you know how to pronounce all of them.
Probably one of the easiest languages out there when it comes to pronunciation. Just don't try to read to write anything.
I listened to episode 5 of Digital Moncast and wrote stuff down:
"The OTHER Japanese kids' show where kids have monsters that fight each other."
"Like that Futurama season after they got cancelled but before they got uncancelled."
"It's like they took a cool design for a Digimon and added way too much random shit to it." "Yeah, that sounds like a Digimon."
"Where's the Digimon stuff come in? So far you're just describing a cat."
Meicoomon is bullshit, it's tabbies that have an M on their heads
I'm reading V-Tamer
"It's a Dr. Seuss nightmare of engineering" Oh yeah, that makes sense, it's like the factory from the Lorax
"The digital world is separate from the internet, so do you think there's a digital world representation of the internet?" "Yeah, but you can't show that on a kids' show."
I know that there's a dick demon in Shin Megami Tensei, I got that reference.
The dub is just openly mocking the show at this point
"I think the problem is that if any one scene goes on for more than five seconds, they might have to spend some of the animation budget"
I didn't remember how terrible Kabuterimon's voice is, it's so bad
"Why don't they remember when they went through it? Oh right, they didn't have the internet back then. Grow up, mom and dad!"
"Is there digital oil in this world? Well, there are oil derricks, but no actual oil."
"It'll pump out something completely unrelated. It'll pump out, like, pumpkin juice or something."
"That's because due to the iron curtain, Russian servers are in a separate digital world."
The Last Guardian development team is fast approaching major milestones in production and has made the tough decision to delay the release of The Last Guardian a few weeks. The Last Guardian will launch on December 6, 2016.

It's pronounced Throat Warbler Mangrove
and more emphasis on the last syllable
coo-ree-tah
This is how I say it, plus the R sound being the Japanese R sound that's more of a hybrid r/l sound to English ears.

Which isn't a complaint mind you
Drew: Square-Circle-Square-Triangle-Square-Circle
Dan: *as he inputs the code* "Square-Triangle-Square-Circle-Square-Triangle"
*nothing happens*
Drew: Huh.
And then they move on.
It's great. Put it in your ears. You're welcome.
End communication.
