I totally understand being sent home by Pinecone's fam last week but it did mean that my vacation was cut 2 days short and I can really feel the strain now that my body is having to keep going without the long period of rest I was anticipating and kind of relying on to replenish it

I'm stealing a sailboat with a water filter. That should be able to last me a while.

You haven't watched Fear The Walking Dead.

    That plan will fail.

Why does it fail on the show? Is it because they don't know how to live on a boat? Because I know how to do that.

Because you can't just live off fish. You'll need other nutrients. You might be able to stick with bull kelp and seaweed but your sodium intake is going to skyrocket.

Which means if you want something besides fish and desalinated water you're going to have to make port somewhere, which is a risk.

Also radar and sonar isn't going to stop working, so anyone else with a boat is going to be able to find you. If it's just you, you're not going to be able to keep a solid watch.

You're in a confined space with limited firepower in the middle of the ocean.

Then, you have tropical storms, which aside from your instruments (which are hopefully solar powered) you won't be able to predict all that well.

Oh, I'm taking the boat to one of the channel islands off shore to live off wild pig and buffalo meat. Maybe start a tribe that kills anyone from the mainland or something. The water filter is just the short term top priority.

Would it be nice if half the planet would get over themselves, embrace Full Communism Now, and let this all go smoothly? Sure man, but let's be real: they'd rather behead each other and go back to the 16th century. We're kidding ourselves if we think anything else is going to happen.

Really though. Everything gets automated, putting already underpaid people completely out of work. Why, exactly, would anyone in any position of authority then decide to give those people who they already weren't paying enough in the first place completely free money?

Everybody who has used the term "vertical" in the past few pages no longer gets to make fun of business buzzword speak.

If I'm going to catch shit for saying I work with "big data", y'all don't get to throw around words like "vertical" that I still only have a vague idea of what they mean despite like 4 different posts to provide context.

I thought it was pretty clear I was being cheeky as hell, but I guess not.

    SYNERGY!

Nah, the one that triggered my post was Senjutsu, actually.

Like, before I thought "vertical" was an industry term related maybe to warehousing, or perhaps entrepreneurship or something.

But then Senj tossed it at me like I was supposed to understand what it meant, so I guess it's a general term?

It seems like it means "field" or "specific section of an industry" or something.

I used it incorrectly really, just because Houn kept talking about moving into Chanus's "vertical"

vertical would be like the set of companies, from low level parts & tools up to the high level companies that turn those into iphones and dildoes

it's douche speak for supply chain

More specifically, it's talking about businesses that specifically cater to other businesses in the same industry. This includes supply chains, sure, but also things like hospital laundry services or patient billing services would count as part of the "Healthcare Vertical": independent businesses that sell their services exclusively to other businesses in the same general industry. This is the opposite of a Horizontal market, which is about business catering to as large a customer base as possible; think retail.

It's totally corporate douche speak, yes, but the concept itself does have implications in marketing and support, especially if you are more of a horizontal organization looking to find ways to sell your product at multiple levels within a common vertical.

For some reason that 1950's vision of "robots do all the work and we'll have time to play all day" stopped being something to aspire to.

It kinda seems like a huge portion of humanity finds not working and living on provided income depressing and starts in on meth?

I'd love to live in Star Trek too but it seems to be psychologically incompatible with a lot of people

It's an interesting thing to watch. I have concerns, but we have found a way to get around those concerns in the past. We'll need to adapt, but we are a pretty adaptable species.

well before it was replacing work with other work

this is kind of more replacing a lot of work with a lot less work
With the baby boomers leaving the marketplace automation will inevitably be what replaces them.

And when Vasalgel hits the market, it will result in a drop in birth rate.

There is a chance this works out in a manor that doesn't cause massive employment shift.

millennials are a larger group than boomers though
