There's a DS game.
I remember that one. If I recall it was not terribly well-received.
My Suikoden opinions, as someone who has played the games more than twice each;
Suikoden 1 is a good game, but it's rough around the edges (gameplay wise), which is especially apparent after you play Suikoden 2. The story is great though, and if you have the patience to play an old ass Jurp it is worth it, especially for the save import to 2. If you want to get all 108 stars, you might want to have a character recruitment guide handy.
Suikoden 2 is my favourite of the series. The story is awesome and the gameplay is basically the first game refined. I think this was the first game I played that had a save import that impacted the game, random sidequests for army members and different recruits based on choices you make all in one game. Probably my favourite of the home bases too.
Suikoden 3 is when Murayama left Suikoden. When I first played it I was super disappointed because of how different and removed it was from the first 2. I replayed it years later with my wife, and my opinion has changed significantly. I'm still salty that Murayama never got the chance to finish his story. It's a great story in it's own right and while there is still a save import, unlike 1-2 it makes little difference to the story of the game.
Suikoden 4 is definitely one of the weaker titles, but if you play Suikdeon Tactics afterwards the story is a little more flushed out. My main problem with 4 is that they give you a ship early on, and no indication of what to do in terms of exploring. I advanced the story on my first playthrough and missed a few characters and story beats. It can easily be the shortest of the games. Also, if you were at all invested in the story of 1-3, you may be disappointed to learn that this is a prequel with little to no bearing on it.
Suikoden 5 was a fantastic game marred by the worst intro I have ever had to slog through. And when I say intro, I mean the horrible first hour before you can leave the first city, where the game forces you to go back and forth talking to people to advance the story before you can start playing the game. That aside, once that is done with, the story was a lot of fun and the characters were really good. I don't understand the hate this game gets, especially coming on the heels of 4.
Suikoden Tierkreis was not great. Had it been released as a "Suikoden-like" game with a different name I may have enjoyed it a litttle more maybe, but it's really just a watered down version of the main game's gameplay elements. Not terrible, but not really worth it.
Suikoden is a lot like Wild Arms in that they're both really rough around the edges in certain spots but as a first foray into a new IP were really strong
God dammit, why is FFXIII never on sale? Oh, sure, the sequels go on sale all the time, but never the game I want to play first, if I want to play them at all.
Bought myself a copy of Radiant Historia. Again. Fourth time's the charm, right?
Radiant Historia is fantastic but isn't there a 3DS port coming soon?
Yes, but the last I heard, we don't yet know when/if an English port of Perfect Chronology will come out. I'll likely get the remake when it comes out, if it's a good update, but right now, I just want to continue the story I was enjoying before my copy of the game was lost to me.

Fair enough.
Wait, did you lose three copies of that game? Are you very mildly cursed?

Possibly. Though, while I lost three saves, I only lost two copies.
First copy, I started a file, played for a few hours, and at some point we misplaced the game. Didn't find it again.
A while later, I bought a new copy. Started a file after my brother had played for a while (he'd made two save files). When my sister borrowed the game, she had to delete an existing file to make room, and did so (understandably) with the file that had the least play time. Mine.
Third file, I started when I had the game back. Played considerably longer than before. Lent the game to my sister again while I was playing other things. And then she moved out before I remembered to ask for it back. She probably still has it. Not mad about that at all; just amused by my string of bad luck/bad decisions wrt this game.
Hopefully, this time I'll keep my hands on the dang thing.
Man, I kinda dig fighting Frenzied monsters in MH4U
They get so much more aggressive and you really have to be on your toes
Yeah, frenzy worked nicely. It's only apex that was dumb.
It's only a handful of monsters that can actually be apex, at least. Looking at the list on kiranico I see Gravios, Tigrex, Tidal Najarala, Deviljho, Diablos, Zinogre... Okay, that's a bit more than a handful, but still.
Suikoden III is my favorite JRPG that isn't attached to Square-Enix. It has its problems -- the battle system has a few wonky elements, it wastes your time with pointless random battles as you travel through old areas, and the soundtrack is way too minimalist.
But what it's good at it's damn good at. The chapter / character selection system is a phenomenal way to tell a linear story while still giving the player freedom. The characters are excellent, and the castle building is probably the best the whole series has to offer in that department. You really get attached to that place, and it's more fun to see it develop than any of the other homesteads. I really liked the skill system and how it granted a lot of differentiation between characters.
The first game is way too rough; it feels like an RPGMaker game to me. Suikoden II was fine, but I found it severely overrated. I get why people liked it so much (the thing that the story does; truly great antagonist set-up), but it mostly felt like a slog. It did have nice army battles, even if they were ripped fairly directly from Romance of the Three Kingdoms II. I skipped IV after all the negative feedback. V was solid and competent, but it also felt like a slog. It was paced badly and about twice as long as it needed to be, and I remember absolutely none of the characters or events after I finished playing.
I wouldn't mind another Suikoden, but I feel chances are low they'd take from the successes of III and instead try to ape II again (as V did). Also Konami is rubbish, etc.
Triptycho: A card-and-dice tabletop indie RPG currently in development and playtesting
As for 3 I end up feeling a little lukewarm on it due mostly to the really terrible "army" style battles in that game along with the kind of weird changes to the combat system wherein lots of attacks have areas of effect, but no way to control positioning. I have no complaints about the cast, which I generally loved. Also the story felt a little too "standard JRPG save the world" in comparison to the smaller stakes of the previous titles.
I did not like Suikoden 3 at all and this is why.
Story felt uninteresting, combat system was frustrating, army battles were awful. The only thing that is any good at all about Suikoden 3 is the characters, and I did not find that interesting enough to like it.
Especially not after Suikoden 2, which is one of my favorite games period, 3 was a huge disappointment. I am still so let down by it that I never got around to playing 4 or 5. (I hear that I should skip 4, but I'm also hearing that from people who liked 3, so perhaps I should play 4.)
I didn't hate Tierkreis (the DS one), but what has been said about it here is pretty accurate. It's not up to the level of 1 or 2, it's not awful, it's just kind of there. I enjoyed it, but I'll probably never replay it.
Suikoden 4 is the one where they saw Suikoden 3 and how everyone loved the player characters in that and how interesting they were and their different perspectives on the world...
I mean, Suikoden 3 is the only one in the main series without a silent protagonist so of all the complaints to lob at Suikoden 4, that one seems kind of odd.
Drew 2 SSRs on GBF's freebie today. Both ended up being gold moons Also both would have been earth characters so I still haven't shaken that particular bit of RNG.
Suikoden is a lot like Wild Arms in that they're both really rough around the edges in certain spots but as a first foray into a new IP were really strong
Also like Suikoden, 2 is the best, followed by 3, 5 , and 1, and 4 should never be talked about.

You're doing better than me, much like the 70 free draws during anniversary, I've drawn fuck and all. Actually my very first 10-draw during anniversary had three rainbows, all of them ended up being gold moons.
I did get Sturm off a single pull immediately AFTER one of the ten draws the other day though, so that burned all my luck.

The analogy holds as I like Wild Arms 4 more than Wild Arms 5 as well.
I also got Sarunan's weapon for the second time in tribute
SSR Ferry is monstrously powerful when used correctly, she can be a bit fiddly though and benefits better in either long fights, or short fights where you can start with full charge meter (raids during strike time, co-op with the right co-op items used, etc)

oh hey we talkin suikoden in here?
suikoden ii is the Best God Damned Jrpg Of All Time
You won't hear people raving about her, but that's largely due to Dark having like a half dozen of the absolute most powerful damage dealers in the game
She is mostly useful for her strong Defense debuffs that stack with the most popular main character debuff skill

Which Suikoden do you have the extremely massive fight against the one guy?
Like you have to prepare every person you've recruited because the fucker refuses to go down?

Suikoden II, Luca Blight
dude gets shot full of arrows, fights 18 people through 3 consecutive battles, shot full of arrows again, and still has enough fight in him for a final duel with the main character
