The cut off is five years because it is a good number and nobody can argue that five years is not enough time to have done something even if you have a baby.
For major cultural touchstones, yeah, this seems good.
I'm not gonna start dropping spoilers about what happens in The Apple just because it's from 37 years ago though, because it's something a lot of people haven't experienced yet.
I think that's the big problem with the idea of putting a rule on how long a spoiler should be kept spoiled - it's less a problem of years, and more a problem of popularity of the thing in question. Some people aren't going to discover things until well after they come out, especially niche media, and in the nature of it being niche media, it probably hasn't been parodied in a hundred Simpsons episodes already.
Oh cool you guys are just talking about the sex scene from the book, great.
i'm concerned that there's no shots of them as adults, that's like...the entire thing about It
This movie is just the kids part, which I am still concerned about because I think pulling the timelines apart fundamentally undermines the novel's biggest strength.
But coming from someone who has been constantly apprehensive about this movie because it's my favorite book ever - that trailer does a lot of things right.
The mini series largely did the same thing - and completely fucked up the kids v monster confrontation as a result.
Hopefully this doesn't make the same mistake.

As someone who also loved the book in spite of that part, I'm pretty on board with that trailer. It has the look and feel of Derry down. The kids look great.
My only concern is the two-part approach, because yeah... it's pretty fundamental to the novel. But films are a different medium so maybe they can make it work.
Now gimme that Dark Tower trailer, for fucks sake!

The book is 1000 pages long or so, so they've got a lot of material to mine for two movies, but you're right. The way the story is structured around the characters' faulty memories, inter-cutting between past and present to slowly reveal the full scope of the story, makes splitting the two time frames up a dubious change.
For starters, the past and present storylines are designed to intentionally mirror each other. Events in one are similar to events in the other. In the book you're introduced to each set of events as they happen simultaneously, in both past and present. Split apart into a movie and its sequel, it means you'll have a sequel that is the same movie done all over again. Due to the parallel structures, people will know what's coming in the second movie before it happens. People new to this story will, as a result, probably find the sequel boring and derivative.

I don't recall a kiddie gangbang. Was that just in the book? I only watched the miniseries.

I'm annoyed that the Huge Vagina Subplot from The Godfather is now a well known thing thanks to Cracked because I'm pretty sure before that I'm the only person in the world who had read The Godfather and it was a really interesting thing to tell people about.
I say subplot, I mean plot. It's the plot of the Godfather. More of the back half of the book is about a huge vagina than is about professional criminals.

High school me was so very confused about the plot where Sonny's cartoonish penis damaged the lady's big vagina, then she falls in love with her vagina repairman.

I'm just really glad I read it before the era where we get told about all the weird quirks of famous books, because it's a hell of a fucking thing if you're not expecting it.

I'm kinda surprised that that GitS spoiler even counts as a spoiler.
Like, I took it for granted that that was gonna be a central point of the movie.

When I was at school there was a kid reading jaws who swore that there was a ton of weird stuff about sexual fantasies in it
Footfall is a novel about vaguely elephant-shaped aliens invading earth, and all I remember of it is half a paragraph of nipple sucking and a scene where a man gets drowned in a toilet.

The movie being hyped right now is Part 1 apparently, with a sequel after

They're breaking the story into two movies. One set in the 1980s with them as kids, then a sequel set in the modern day with them as adults.
For major cultural touchstones, yeah, this seems good.

It's only in the book.
It didn't quite make the Television Miniseries.
Yes, it's in the book. There's a lot of stuff in the book that never made it into the miniseries.
If I wasn't taking a break from Stephen King after reading through the Dark Tower, I'd read it again.

It's also like 2 pages of an 1100 page book.

Yeah, that's about the essence of a haunting sexual experience in the sum total of a life. Way to put it in perspective!

I honestly think it's more than that. It's most of the back half of the book.
That's the last thing she needs
