some years were tough, with multiple top 20 movies ever in them.
some were not tough at all. I don't love either of those Scorsese films, but they brought machine guns to the knife fights of their respective years
The hardest choice came down between The Prestige & Pan's Labyrinth for 2006.
Just... How do you???
To be fair, you made the right choice IMO. That is easily my favorite Nolan film. While Pan's Labyrinth is amazing, too, the overall emotion of it brings me down too much. Every now and then I want a movie to tell me everything's going to be alright, you know?

See, I went with Pan's Labyrinth as it is a movie with emotion and not a Christopher Nolan film

I did exclude a couple of movies that are too emotionally resonant for me though - Antichrist and Upstream Color were both not included because while I greatly enjoyed watching them I have no desire to ever do so again

The Prestige and Pan's Labyrinth are the two best films by two brilliant directors with some very consistent flaws.
I will always love Antichrist because I was once sitting next to an achingly pretentious person on a plane (like "what wines do you have" "red or white" "ugh... what year is the white?" etc etc) who opened their Macbook and started playing Antichrist (while looking around to make sure everyone had noticed they were watching a very fancy black and white film, by a foreign director, on a macbook) apparently unaware that the first three minutes of Antichrist prominently feature Willem Dafoe's slick, turgid cock going absolutely to town on a nice lady. Just the sight of them hurriedly slamming the laptop shut and going bright red while everyone around giggled at their embarrassment has bought Von Trier a lifetime pass.
Like, looking over 2009, I'm tempted to say something easy like The Dark Knight or Star Trek. But then I'm suuuuper tempted to say The Brothers Bloom or Antichrist.
Fuck, or Bronson!

Man you start out thinking this is going to be easy until you realize that multiple excellent movies that you love came out in the same year and it is legit hard to figure out which one you like the most! Like, I was really stuck on certain years, like 1991, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2008, 2010, 2014... URGH.
1995 easily took me the longest, I think, though I had 2 for 1999 (Galaxy Quest and The Matrix) right up until I hit the Post button.
very annoyed at the lack of Spider-Man 2 on these lists
I almost included the first one I think, but I prefer the first to the second in a big way
That's a Spider-Man opinion that I'll disagree with, but still respect
I super hate the Peter is losing his powers because he doesn't believe in himself plotline, so while there's a lot else to like in the second one, that sours it for me

I think I've only watched the first three Spider-Man movies one time apiece (and the next two not at all). For me, 어린 신부 just holds more nostalgic rewatchability due to circumstances of 2004. My main criteria/tiebreaker was "Out of these in this year that I've seen, what is the movie I'd most feel like rewatching right now?"

Other than 1985 most years were easy to narrow down to 2 choices, initially. But 1987 through the early 2000s was pretty tough most of the time. Most years from 1985 onward could have easily gone to another choice if had drunk one more beer, or was in a slightly different mood, or... I thought 1995 was a sure thing for Heat, until I realized Babe came out the same year. And for as much as I love Heat, if I were to sit down and watch one of the two all the way through it would be Babe more often than not. Making that choice lead to George Miller and Edgar Wright being the only directors with two films on my list; if I had gone with Heat instead then Michael Mann would have had two instead of George Miller.
2013 had a decent number of very good movies, but almost none that I would call my favorite for the year. That, 2011 and 1998 were tough to make a choice on for very different reasons than most other years.

The task is complicated considerably by foreign films. In my case, specifically Hong Kong films.
very annoyed at the lack of Spider-Man 2 on these lists
yeah unfortunately that year included The Incredibles and Mean Girls and Million Dollar Baby
I mean it also has Eternal Sunshine, but I made my choice (out of the three movies listed the only one I am willing to concede any ground on is Mean Girls, and yes, I'm aware of how stupid it is to say things like "concede ground on" in this discussion)

i got kinda lucky as a huge number of foreign films i love were released before i was born, and i never got super into the hong kong renaissance/explosion if the nineties
though i kinda wanna do an all foreign version of my list now..
it already represents six countries, but that's not diverse enough
thinking there'd be a lot of stephen chow and takashi miike

Foreign films would factor in more for me in a list of best films for each year. Certainly they would factor in far more if I were to just list my top 100 of all time. For this list though any that sprang to mind were always topped by something else. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Oldboy came very close, but Unbreakable and Lost in Translation both speak to me on a far more personal level.
Leon: The Professional could be my top choice for 1994 depending on mood, but I give the edge to Pulp Fiction mainly because my friends and I had just discovered Quentin Tarantino shortly before it came out via passing around a VHS copy of Reservoir Dogs, and Pulp Fiction was a damned revelation for us at that age and coming from that discovery.
