I remember the first teaser video and everyone, myself included, being all, "Holy shit female Link?".

    Ah, good times. Good times.

That trailer was the first time we got to see what Princess Zelda looked like. Probably one of the best video game trailers ever made.

And yeah lately I've been getting the itch to start the game over.

I recently just grabbed it on the switch with the dlc, so I could do a master move play through. Which is a trip, let me tell you.

(I think my only complaint is that the guardian scouts in shrines are crazy tough?)

So much fun though. I especially love the octo platforms and dumping enemies TO THEIR DOOOOM

I never managed to beat trial of the sword on my normal run on the Wii u.

I began master mode on the switch with trepidation, because although I thought I could handle the main game, I knew I'd feel a huge sense of unfinished business if trial of the sword proved too hard.

Happy to say I managed to beat all 3 parts with a little advice from the internet, and now I'm glad there are beasts like golden lynels out there to test me as I live in the end game. Planning to get all the shrines this time too!

I'm really debating whether to play through a second time on master mode or enjoy a more laid back casual play through again on normal.

On the one hand, the chill exploration and discovery of the game is what I fell in love with. On the other, a challenge may keep me more engaged to get through it again.

What does Master Mode do again? I'm thinking I should run it.

All the enemies are the next version tougher than they previously were, gold enemies are now a thing, and there are new encounters scattered all over as well.

There are probably some other things but those are the main ones. Bosses are harder as well by a significant amount.

Mainly just bump the rank of all monsters up by 1, add a new monster rank that's gold, and give monsters regenerating health. Oh yeah, and there are a bunch of floating platforms strewn about with archers and items.

The plateau is almost a completely different game. Once you're off though, the difficulty levels back out and you're just dealing with stronger monsters sooner.

The more I reflect on it, the more I'm not really a fan of the mode. Gold monsters are insane damage sponges and really exasperate the whole durability problem with weapons. IE: They are not worth fighting at all. And regenerating health really cuts down on the fun things you can do. There's little point pushing a boulder down a cliff unless you can run down there fast enough to finish the job before their health just comes back. The floating platforms of items and enemies are kind of neat, if awkwardly looking out of place.

My suggestion would be to just play the plateau on Master Mode. That was an amazing experience. Rest of the game, not so much.

The regening health is an issue - Enemy being damage sponges, i semi-like because it really encourages creative kills (i.e using a korok leaf to dump a bunch of silver boboklins over a cliff). That said, i do agree on it exacerbating the durability issues, even if i overall like the system.

The octo platforms i frankly wish were in the base game. They're great, they encourage yet more hilarity, and i just love the implications of Bobolinks etc carefully spending time capturing octorocks and tying them to things, being so proud of their ability to fly!

Right up until that jerk with a bow comes along.

Hmmm, i wonder how often they have bird-strike issues?

I think it's fair to say enemy HP scaled up too much by the end. There's a point where they're annoying to use easy to find stuff on so you're willing to be creative or cheesy or break out the big guns... but they just went past that and kept going with silver.

BotW was my first Zelda game.

Oh, we owned the original two back in the NES era, and ALttP on the SNES, but those were always within the purview of my oldest brother. I had only graduated to navigator ("You already checked that hallway") by the SNES era. After that, I moved to the PlayStation.

And, through Twitch and, well, the internet, I'm generally aware of the other titles.

But BotW is mine. And, boy, did I pick a good one to start with. I really hope we get to revisit this iteration of Hyrule again.

Gold quality enemies not having any benefit to bothering with them makes me sad. Even in the normal game, Silver enemies aren't exactly worthwhile either. Enemies don't drop any different quality items (barring elemental based stuff). Bokoblins will still drop their teeth no matter what difficulty the given enemy is. The problem is also further exasperated by the fact that you don't have to kill enemies to take their weapons. You can knock them down and they'll probably drop their weapon. Run up, take it, and they'll have a visible temper tantrum about it.

  • WybornWyborn GET EQUIPPED Registered User regular
Gold enemies drop gems much more frequently than silver enemies, which already drop them pretty frequently

Because of the 2 year anniversary, I returned to BOTW to finally tackle the Champion's Ballad DLC, and wow this game is stunning. I'd previously sunk ~150 hours into it, but everywhere I go there is still new stuff for me to find, new enemies for me to tackle! This is such a monumental gem of a game.

I guess my only issue with the game is that I'm now at a point where I need gear that protects from heat and ... *shrug* Dunno where to get that! I've completed the water and wind Divine Beasts. Gerudo desert place is too hot (I know I can make food to help), and Goron village is WAY too hot. I wound up doing the wind Beast with the warm doublet I got randomly early on and eating foods to help with the temp.

Need to focus on making some money, too.

Great game, though. Just need to not put it down for a couple weeks at a time to play other things, cuz I get all screwed up on my controls.

Both hot zones you'll probably need to start with food for resists.

Cool, I kind of figured that might be the case. I think getting the Warm Doublet early on messed with my perceptions a bit. I know you get the warm clothes set from the ... bird village (I am so not in the loop on any of the lore/races, really), so I figured cool clothes would come from Gerudo, since they weren't exactly helpful in the Goron place.

  • PolaritiePolaritie Sleepy Registered User regular
There's actually separate resists for the two areas (yes its dumb). Goron place requires you to find materials nearby iirc for the armor.

Yeah, there's ways to get clothes to deal with both areas in either area. You'll come across it, but food and certain items can help with the heat in the mean time.

Also, for the desert it actually works to just travel at night and stay in the shade. If you've got an ice weapon that'll also cool you down a bit, although perhaps not enough for some places (the same goes in opposite for fire weapons and lit torches).

All the environment hazards are two stage depending on location. Elemental Weapons/Armor, and Food can all be mix and matched to deal with it, Weapons count for a single stage and each piece of armor with the right Attribute counts for a stage as well.

non-spoilery tip regarding the Goron area. There is a horse stable on the road where a person will offer you a heat resist potion for a price. Also if you keep following the road into the Goron area there is a Goron that will offer a piece of equipment in exchange for other things. I believe it has to be night for that second quest.

Since grass and pottery aren't consistent rupee sources as in past games, one of the best ways to make money is to sell excess monster parts. They have a few other uses, but when you have 600 Bokoblin horns I think you can do without 500 of them easily.

Breath of the Wild was great in that if you needed the desert resistance, you just had to follow the road and you'd discover the quest line for it. If you need the I-don't-want-to-set-on-fire stuff, you do the same; follow the road. BUT if you don't follow the road and just like to experiment with shit and climb around and all that, then you'd discover alternate means and be fine.

Cold weather resist they teach you about at the start of the game, which at the same time introduces you to all the solutions. You can eat, you can potion, you can dress, you can move in specific manners at specific times of day; it's all given to you at the start as options you can do whatever you want.

    Man. What a brilliant game.

Point of order: for generic cooking, it doesn't matter how you arrange your components for total rupee generation. The formula they use is essentially (Sum of Component Values) x (A Multiplier Based On The Number Of Ingredients), so as long as you're cooking anything viable in a stack of 5 (even mixing ingredients), you're getting max value out of your components.

Go and be free of the need to stack like ingredients!

When you get to Goron City there is a Gerudo woman who will buy groups of gems randomly, but gives you a lot of extra money for them. I advise you to sell to her if you need money.

Gems are useful for a few things, but nothing that's going to stop you from progressing.
