Wark wark wark.

not sure if a first viewing in 2017 will make it age well
mm
probably not to be honest
but if you're into practical effects, puppetry, and weirdass world building you'd likely still enjoy it
(unfortunately the Gelfling bits get less watchable with every year i age)
Yeah, it's a slower movie with a fairly basic fantasy plot, but all of the worldbuilding details surrounding that plot are fantastic. The sets and puppets are probably the best Jim Henson Studios has made, and the Skeksis have a lot going for them. There's a whole lot of Skeksis culture shown in the movie and it's all fascinating.
They originally had the Skeksis speaking a constructed language to make them feel more alien/evil but test audiences did not like it. I think it's a nice touch, but then we wouldn't have gotten "Pleaaaaaasssseeee!?" so it's a wash.
Also this is a great time to mention that if you're in the LA area, the Egyptian Theater is showing a 70mm print of The Dark Crystal on the 15th of next month. It's going to be nice to see it in such a big format.

Oh wow, this is excellent news! That movie had more of an impact on my creative development as a kid than probably anything else I encountered, except maybe Labyrinth which was more or less its sibling film. I had a copy that we'd recorded from some network playing it, and for months after that I watched it over and over again, until the VHS tape wore out from rewinding too many times. My notebooks were full of drawings Skeksis and Garthim and Mystics and Landstriders. I haven't been this excited in ages!
Realizing lately that I don't really trust or respect basically any of the moderators here. So, good luck with life, friends! Hit me up on Twitter @DesertLeviathan

It had been a long time since I saw it
the summer before I was a senior in high school the library had a copy of a book from the guy who did the backstory? or the art for the movie?
I thought it was so cool to learn more about what the movie was about than was just shown and how some of the stuff came to be

My best friend was terrified of this movie, ever since he saw it twenty years ago as a child.
So I forced him to watch it.
And the combined laugh & scream from him at the stabbing in this scene shook our entire home:

The Director of Choreography and Puppet Movement on the original movie was one Cheryl McFadden, who also had an acting career where she went by her middle name - "Gates"

There's an extra on some copies of Labyrinth with some behind the scenes stuff showing her helping out with the Chilly Down dance scene.

There's an old saying in my family: If you can teach a puppet to move, you can teach an android to dance.
