Watch this if you're in need of an interview that asks questions like “why is it, when you walk down the street, there’s not half the people with nooses around their necks? What makes life insist?”
Okay this video opens up by saying it was brought to you by, like, five different common podcast advertisers and then just moves on. I'm already sold.
"I'm not sure if we looked at [Baranor's creation] as a choice, but it was an easy one to make," Salisbury said, when asked about the representative weight of creating the new character. "I don't think we thought twice about it when we were writing the story and when we wrote Baranor. It was just kind of an obvious character for us to write. We're obviously very happy to make sure that we give everyone an opportunity to see a character that they love, but I don't think it was deliberate. It was obvious."
I'm not sure why but this feels like a weird thing to say
You don't just sort of accidentally fall into writing a black character in this franchise that's never had one before
You made a conscious choice and said "hey, let's write a black person here in this notoriously mega-white setting"
And that's good! It's a good choice. But why not own it?
Why do this "aw shucks, well he just kinda turned out to be black and we went with it" thing

Oh, I was misreading their summaries, I thought the dev was overly bragging about adding a black character after making two games about generic white guy seething with rage.

Maybe I'm being too presumptuous, but I think a lot of people forget that Danny and Arin, the Game Grumps, aren't the dudes who made Dream Daddy. It's written by Vernon Shaw, who works on GG in their studio (and used to be the creator and head of Hot Pepper Gaming) and Leighton Grey (an artist that Vernon is friends with, don't know her connection to GG if there is one). Vernon is gay, and Leighton describers herself as queer. Game Grumps gave them a space to work on the game, since Vernon already worked there, and funded the game as well as providing some of the voice acting. They basically published it. It's a genuine effort written and helmed by two queer people.

I think there might be too many negatives in this sentence but I'm not sure
The way people talk about that game, it's really upsetting that it was written and illustrated and voice-acted by queer people both male and female and yet most of the skepticism I've read always frames it as if it was made by straight men and one queer lady as if that's a documented fact.
This feels like an asshole thing to say but are we just assuming people are straight by default here (and judging them on that) or was there a communication breakdown? Because it feels like people are doing something shitty to queer creators based on their own false assumptions.

I think the negatives are fine but that first "don't" should be "can't" for readability.

Because it sells.

I know it sells, but saying people are ignorant of something when the game is literally saying something else to them?

Well.
"Game Grumps" is a company.
"The Game Grumps" are Arin and Danny.

Oh come on, the marketing is literally "Dream Daddy (A Game by Game Grumps)"
Because it sells.
It sells to a specific audience and makes another audience, the audience that should probably actually be the target demo, wary of it
Oh yeah because that's a distinction that everyone is potently aware of and instinctively understands.
Its not one thats super hard to suss out though
That's besides the point though because your average person isn't going to bother trying to suss anything out. They will see a thing and form their opinion based on their pre-existing knowledge. When people see Game Grumps they think Arin and Dan and that is where the thoughts on the matter come to a stop.
I should probably be clear, just to avoid misunderstanding--what I'm saying is that for the average person with perhaps only a passing knowledge of them, the Game Grumps branding begins and ends with the titular Grumps and if the game chooses to trade prominently on that branding they reap any consequences of the misunderstandings that may come along with it.
Game grumps branding is a surefire way to get me not to buy a thing ever.

anyways, the game is good and seems to have a good dev team so people who were unsure based on branding should consider taking a second look! If you wanna see some of it first a good queer streamer I watch, Adam Koebel, has streamed a bunch of it.
Oh yeah because that's a distinction that everyone is potently aware of and instinctively understands.
Its not one thats super hard to suss out though
If you have familiarity with the company/people, yeah, probably not
I'm still not entirely sure on the distinction, because all I'm working from is the Dream Daddy trailer started with a screen that said Game Grumps
I assumed that was just a production company
Its a youtube channel thats growing itself into more of a brand kinda like pa going beyond just webcomics
Edit so for this game it is the production company yeah
What have they done to become more of a brand? Dream Daddy is the first time I've seen the Game Grumps branding when Arin and Dan aren't heavily involved
I'm real-life acquainted with some folks who are unfortunately big into performative allyship and virtue signaling, and their full-throated endorsement of Dream Daddy has made me skeptical of the game in a way that is 100% unfair and not based in anything the actual game has done. Which is a bummer! And again, yeah, completely unfair.
I wish dumb associations/biases like that were easier to ignore/work past.

Besides expanding to include NSP and Star Bomb they also have the affiliated channels who work out of the game grumps studio and are promoted by game grumps as well as the non game grumps videos that go up on the official channel
Though you're right that dream daddy is the first big thing that game grumps as a company/brand has produced as far as I can tell
I was watching Angel Olsen at a concert the other night, and I was having a good time, and then I noticed that the guitar player had a clasp on his bolo tie featuring an outline of the "End of the Trail" sculpture. And I got so annoyed that it started casting this shadow over a show that I had been enjoying literally seconds earlier.

Or mine is, anyway.
I also have a very dumb brain, so this theory has some weight.
