I like failsafe, and I liked tiny tina.

Like I get why people wouldn't like either of them but I do not understand the level of ire that tiny Tina gets

FailSafe is actually the only good character in Destiny 2 so uhh
    wtf you guys

Also the amount the FailSafe AI is actually in the game is tiny.

The only character in D2 is actually dislike is Asher Mir. The crazy scientist bit with this goofy cartoon voice just doesn't feel like it fits in Destiny imo.
I want to say I like Sloane, but she's basically nothing which is a bummer. Failsafe grew on me after I initially disliked her, and Devrim Kay is fun. Zavala, Hawthorne, and Cayde all rule, and Ikora doesn't get enough screentime which sucks.

I continue to not like Dan Ryckert, news at 11.

His personality and the way he handles himself is just antithesis to me. Which is fine, variety is the spice of life. I'm just glad I can come here and read about things like the Exquisite Corps, because actually watching him intentionally tank and waste the time of three other people just for a gag would royally piss me off.

How is like... the comedy in D2? I appreciate a little levity, but all the commercials and promos were leaning really hard on Cayde.

Every time Cayde talks he's trying to make a joke. Cayde doesn't actually take up that much screen time overall though. The game is definitely not Saint's Row in terms of just trying to be funny...but yes, definitely, Cayde is the comic relief. The commercials are not representative of how much actual screen time Cayde gets.

Ok good, because I don't mind the Malcolm Reynolds-esque asides, but a whole game of Destiny with that would be frustrating I think.

I'm glad Bungie doesn't take itself too seriously, but at the same time, I actually kinda like their self-serious stuff, because they do it well. Probably sounds weird and contradictory, but I've always liked the way they approach story and lore and things like that.

Just having the plucky sarcastic guy leading the whole thing would throw me off.

Destiny 2 has roughly equivalent amounts of story-related single-player content, but it's much better quality. It also has more things to do in each area than the original. Destiny 1 was already a great game that was lacking in content, Destiny 2 is better in pretty much all regards. Except Shaders.

Wait, really? Equivalent would be about 14 hours of story-related gameplay. It really has that little? Still, after all they said?

I think Bungie doesn't really get Mal Reynolds. They saw the snark and went "we want that!" but the thing that made that character actually super compelling wasn't that he was a nonstop snark machine, it was that there was this undercurrent of despair that bled through. Fillion was great at conveying that, but that element seems to have been lost on game developers.

For a story in a game I'm being asked to pay $60 for? Yeah. It's also the same amount of single player content as Destiny 1, which everyone was mad about.

There's 17 story missions in Destiny 2, each of which is longer than most if not all of the missions in vanilla D1. There's also 26 Adventures, which are side missions available on each planet, each of which is a full voice acted mission with it's own little story that take place in the open world, lasting anywhere from 5-20 minutes. Then, after you beat the story missions, you unlock 4 quest mission chains, one on each planet, which are a set of 3-4 missions and open-world solo activities that award unique weapons and story.

There's not the same amount of content as Destiny 1, nowhere close.

Then good, i'm glad that was a misunderstanding. Even though i'm going to play it on PC so won't have to pay money to play with other people i'm still pretty likely to mostly play it on my own. The time (14 hours, until I ran out of content) I put into Destiny 1 was a joy because that game controls like an absolute dream and the setting seems kinda neat.

So I watched the Exquisite Corps episode and it wasn't as bad as I feared, as Dan still played tactically enough to win the battle at zero casualties, though the renaming of Lang was annoying but I expect that to be fixed by Abby next episode.

Are the DnD/Pathfinder episodes any good from years ago?

Edit: Started the DnD one, Dan's comment of: "I identify with being a human, so I think I'll stick to that." and then Drew's deadpan to the camera was perfect. Those two worked really well together for humor value.

cayde feels pretty flanderized in Destiny 2

in the Taken King where he first had his big story push he was a competent leader who used his disregard for the rules to get things done

in Destiny 2 he's the funny man who says funny things, wacky wacky

also the problem with Zavala and Ikora in D2 is that they're written as straight men for the odder characters to bounce off of, but in D2 they only have Cayde to bounce off them now, so they don't really do much

Listening to Jeff have basically the same misgivings about Destiny 2 as he did for the first game is really disheartening.

I played a lot of Destiny. I really liked that game, but it had a lot of problems and I really hoped the second one would fix them. But the stuff Jeff is talking about sounds fundamentally the same as the original problems with the game.

Brad of course cannot be trusted via a via Destiny. He has an irrational love for those games and he strongarmed that first game onto their top 10 list that year when it didn't belong there at all.

I played The Taken King for 100 hours solo save for one run of the raid with some fine PA folks and had a blast. Destiny 2 being just that again except I can play with some RL mates is really all I'm looking for.

Jeff's critique is pretty on point and listening to brad come in to defend all off them is pretty silly.

Rob at waypoint put up a good article that spoils the story but breaks down all the things out failed at.

Ultimately, they pivot the game more to the end game, and getting everyone to the end game, and didn't really spend a lot of time tuning pacing/story of the mid game. But given the way the majority will play it, can't really fault them for it.

Sympathize with Jason, was out of town all weekend and just yesterday finished the campaign, knowing that everyone was already gearing up for the raid and I was just unlocking a subclass had a feeling of being kicked down, there was no point in bothering to group with anyone, where you felt compelled to ignore the story even more then the game already seems to just to try and catch up

Yeah if I get the game it's not going to be for a few weeks or so. I started the original Destiny late as well, was able to catch up with folks to raid and stuff, but I'm not sure I have the time to do that right now. Which means I'm always dragging behind a little bit.

I played little of the original and remember none of it and don't feel like I'm missing out on much, if anything. There are definitely elements of the plot that I feel like I would need more familiarity with the first game to understand but the game itself doesn't seem to think that understanding those elements is vital thethe experience, so I just don't care and never feel like not caring is costing me anything.

The only things that can feel incomprehensible without destiny 1 maybe is being overwhelmed with what loot/currency is important or rare and what isn't.

None of that changes what the game does well, shooting dudes in the head and having it pop.

But to some people "the game" is getting more better loot as fast as possible; and most concerns/critiques are really based on these systems and how well they work

On paper, it sounds like a game I'd really enjoy. I love shooting stuff and I love loot.

I can't get past the part where I'm locked out of content and loot if I play by myself. I can get everything in Diablo playing solo and it doesn't matter a whit. Doesn't affect anyone else's multiplayer experience.

I have two kids. Don't have time to dedicate four hours to a raid, even if I could find a bunch of other people to team up with for those four hours.

These conversations always show me what a terrible job Bungie did of marketing Destiny and subsequently Destiny 2. No one should buy Destiny/2 for it's single player content. If that's what you're paying 60 bucks for, save yourself the headache and us having to read the complaints. It's a single player game only in the thinnest of senses. The long game of Destiny is absolutely loot gathering to push harder and harder content with other people. If you're not getting in to to Destiny to do that, you're probably wasting your 60 bucks. The fact that it only has 14 hours of mission content never entered my mind. I've got 40 hours in to Destiny 2, and already the large majority of that has been "end game", gearing my character up for the raid and helping clan mates and friends do the same. I can barely tell you what happened in the story at this point beyond the major plot beats.

Almost all of Jeff and Brad's disagreement over the quality and breadth of Destiny come down to that argument. It's also the hardest thing to explain to a casual listener. That what makes Destiny good is those unscripted moments with friends, and even randos, that occur when you're out in the world doing the group content or pushing on the latest cutting edge content. If none of that is your thing, than Destiny 2 is probably going to feel disappointing to you.
