I was still checking AICN a couple times each week for Capone's stuff and AICNHorror. Mostly just because Capone would line up screenings of movies in Chicago though, and the contests to get tickets were only on/through AICN.

I saw a lot of advance screenings of good movies that way, often with directors, writers or actors in attendance for Q&A sessions afterwards. I already follow Steve on twitter and will keep up with him wherever he winds up for the same reason. The rest of AICN has been a giant garbage fire though and not worth looking at since Drew McWeeny left many years ago.

The drafthouse itself - the events, the theater, the food - is good, but the company culture has me thinking twice about spending any money there until they clean up their act.

Wasn't the Drafthouse already moving away from Knowles and AICN before this came out? The one article I saw mentioned that he wasn't involved in the event this year.

I.. won't deny those films are similar

But if "rescuing someone important from a weird jail" is enough to be plagiarism thats a weird ass precedent

It's not tho. There's quite a bit more similarities than that.
In their ruling, the judges listed a long list of similarities between “Escape From New York” and “Lockout,” including heroes that “got into the prison by flying in a glider/space shuttle, had to confront inmates led by a chief with a strange right arm, found hugely important briefcases and meet a former sidekick who then dies” and “at the end (of both films the heroes) keep secret documents recovered during their mission.”

These are all either incredibly common action movie cliches that can be found in thousands of films or so vague as to be meaningless (Strange right arm)

i think you're really reaching here. the two films are really similar; it's not just strange right arm, it's "had to confront inmates led by a chief with a strange right arm". it's similar in very specific ways, not just incredibly common cliches but all the same cliches presented in very similar ways

is it a similarity worth a million bucks? i don't think so but a bunch of professionals in Europe do and I'm pretty sure they know more than I do about it.

It's a common thing that when court cases about plagiarism talk about the similarities it sounds really goofy, and then when you see the two things next to each other it looks obvious as shit.

Like, this is something that happened a few times in copyright class. We'd read a case and they would mention something that seemed universal, and then we'd watched clips from the two movies and they'd be exactly the same.

So yeah. Don't take the dry text from the court case purely at face value or you're gonna get the wrong idea.

Aintitcool is a joke at this point, but there was a good stretch in the late nineties/early 2000's in which it (along with Harry) honestly was a pretty big player in the film world. They were breaking tons of stories, had reviews for movies before anyone else did, etc. It was through them that I first learned of shit like Equilibrium, Eternal Sunshine, and others.

That said, Harry was always the weakest and creepiest part of the site. For the longest time I figured his thing was just an act, but I came across him a couple of times in Drafthouse excursions, and nope, dude's pretty much like he's on the page.

I still read AICN because old habits die hard. Pretty much anything written by Harry was ignored by me because there was no way he didn't like it (99% of the time), so his opinion was less than meaningless. And when I say I read the site, I really mean I just read Quint's articles and Herc's TV info.

Moriarty leaving was basically the end of that site for me.

Somewhere there is an intern or a grip or something that had a moment of opportunity to tell James Cameron that no one gives a rat’s ass about 3D or Avatar anymore and they couldn’t muster up the courage to do it and here we are.

That said, $175 million opening weekend. I mean, this is America, for Christ’s sake. We elected Donald Trump to lead us.
