Just a side story? No you are right. Rogue One doesn't count. It's only about how they got the Plans for the Death Star. I'm sure New Hope would have ended well if they never got the Plans for the Death Star. Just because it Lacks " Episode # " in its title, doesn't mean it not a part of the story line.

I agree and would also argue that it doesn’t matter because the general draw would be it being set in the Star Wars universe and any movie set there prior to the latest films have been released In blocks many years apart
It's my family tradition to see Star Wars on Xmas Eve, so I must survive ten days without spoilers.
It’s our tradition to see a movie and get takeout. For three years running now it will be Star Wars we see so good work there, Disney.
Well, same really, we've been seeing a film on the 24th every year since I was a young child. The fact that the tradition has morphed into seeing Star Wars is down to Disney. We're actually changing the tradition again to seeing Star Wars and then another film, because we did that on a whim last year and my sister really liked it.

Actually I guess that is gonna lose its luster with movies coming out every year
Or else Force Awakens doesn't count, depending on your perspective.
Main story vs side story.
Well, not funny for the sick children...
