    Fun dacts
    Denise Worell 1983
"In the sequel Luke would be a sixty year old Jedi Knight. Han Solo and Leia would be together, although Lucas says, 'They might be married , or not. We have never actually discussed marriage in this galaxy. I don't even know if it exists yet. Who knows what relationship they will have. I mean they're together, let's put it that way.' The sequel focuses mainly on Luke, and Lucas says Mark Hamill will have first crack at the part if he is old enough. "If the first trilogy and social and political and talks about how society evolves," Lucas says, "Star Wars is more about personal growth and self-realization, and the third deal with moral and philosophical problems. In Star Wars, there is a very clear line drawn between good and evil. Eventually you have to face that good and evil aren't that clear-cut and the real issue is trying to understand the difference. The sequel is about Jedi Knighthood, justice, confrontation, and passing on what you have learned."

I wanna see this star wars again but I'm broke as heck. I'll just have to visualize
    Luke chugging milk

It is very awesome when you see a star wars for the first time and the music starts with the trumpets and text comes up. It's very exciting.

I have a lot of feelings.

There were a firm twenty five minutes of ads and trailers before they started my movie and I was VERY pleased to see the crawl come on.

I also genuinely miss the Fox Fanfare. It's weird but I associate that with Star Wars over anything else, it's like the opening bars of the title music for me.

After reading the secret history of star wars and watching all the sfdebris star wars movies I think I get where Lucas's head was at regarding the prequels and the changes to the originals. I don't agree with all the choices and think the bad acting and writing weight them down, but I get it and have a new appreciation for them. I still really enjoy the prequels

Rey refers to the clearly sentient caretakers as things. (Also, what are those things instead of who are they?) Is she a space racist?

Star Wars is good, but I really wish the movies would explore the grey areas with the protagonists more often
Kylo is just an evil jerk who repeatedly refuses redemption, and makes the evil choice when given the option

He apparently wants to destroy the past

    Like everything, ever

And it feels like a really drawn out tantrum because Luke almost killed him in his sleep based on a vision

And his goal isn't to kill Luke

He would very like to kill Luke, but that isn't his main goal

    And his goal isn't power

It's just to destroy the past? With no larger goal of a safer society or a more prosperous empire or anything, really

I know Star Wars is pretty... basic with it's characters and their motivations

    And it always has been

The spectacular failure of the prequels to show Anakin's fall and instead showing him as a moody, abusive sociopathic teenager are scaring people off, maybe

But I would love to have an antagonist who had some nuance other than I want to rule everything or I want to destroy everything

Kylo Ren is a man who has the weight of multiple legacies on his shoulders compounded who, as a kid was taken by the last Jedi master who expected him to become the next great hope for the galaxy. He not-unfairly resents these expectations while at the same time believing that he is special and does deserve greatness--he just wants it to be his OWN legacy and not the shadow of those who came before him. It's pretty easy to see how that angst and conflict could be seized upon by a master of the dark side, or, to step outside of the fiction itself, how that sort of thing can turn to pettiness and bitterness. It's far from the first story where the lauded descendent of a great hero or heroes looked instead to their great villain for inspiration.

Of course he wants to kill the past--he's constantly dogged by it. To accept redemption is tantamount to admitting failure, to accepting he's nothing more than a shadow of his family that came before him. He doesn't do evil because he was driven to it, he does evil because he's a petty, selfish, and emotional brat. You know, the same reason so many people in real life choose to do evil every day. He's way more complex than previous Star Wars villains by being more human.

Kylo is a guy who can't do anything with less than his full energy.
If he's dark side then he had to be full dark side.
If he's going to be influenced by the past he's going full Vader
If he's going to kill the past he's going to kill it all
    No half measures

I guess I can appreciate the character, but it doesn't strike me as something that should have galactic significance, I guess

If this civil war is a truly huge conflict, and their civilization is truly galactic, Kylo and Hux don't work in that context for me

Their antics mark them as incompetent? I'm searching for the right words

I know Donald Trump is in charge of the USA right now, which is fucking unbelievable, but

I can't quite grasp that Hux and Kylo could behave the way they do and get to where they are

The entire US Government is a testament to how the people running an empire can be petulant little shits and get away with it because they have the connections and the power. In fact a lot of human history is woefully underqualified rich fascist twats fucking shit up for petty reasons and mostly getting away with it

I have been surrounded by three to four dudes in my house who just keep complaining about this continuously.

Its like I am trapped in a real-life Reddit thread.

My roommate shared with me that he signed an online petition to have The Last Jedi removed from official canon, and if I could have conjured a locker I would have shoved him into it.

Man, if he gives a shit about signing an online petition, he's already living life from within a cosmic locker. It's his home now.

On the plus side though, they're not likely to release a Supremacy. Even at Armada scale, it'd be the size of a mid sized car.

they had hyperspace tracking. That's the thing Finn and ride attempted to shut off.

they had new technology that let them do it, thus the shutdown sideplot

Overall - excellent. Personal gripe - shave a minute or two off of every action scene and spend it on character development. All these great actors and very little space to work with.

i feel like we got that?
Rey - becoming a Jedi isn't a quick fix for problems great (the First Order) or personal (the feeling of having no significance)

Poe - all action and no consideration for the heavy weight of command will get your rebellion killed quickly; being in command is hugely different from being an ace pilot

Finn - bothsiderism sucks, caring only about yourself sucks, care about the world you live in and the people who live in it with you

Luke - you WILL make mistakes. living means facing those mistakes.

this is way oversimplifying what we got (which i thought was pretty great despite some flaws), but there was definitely character development in gobs

I just saw this again. Still love it to bits. I do think the Finn/Poe/Rose plot is not as strong as the rest, but it’s still functional and works well enough. If I had to grade it, it’d be like... all that stuff gets a solid B, while the Luke/Rey plot is a solid A+.

But I hate letter grades so I’ll just leave it at “it’s Very Good.”
