SOME of the "Jacen Solo becomes a Sith Lord" series was good and some of it really wasn't because there were god knows how many authors on it
On the whole though I don't think it's worth visiting at this stage
I didn't like that arc at all. It had moments where it was a fun look at how arrogance and the pressure of having the safety of the galaxy on your shoulders can affect a person and then it had moments where they were basically doubling down on lame Anakin Skywalker shit and cartoonish evil. Also it retroactively undermined some of the stuff I liked in my aforementioned favorite bit of the NJO series.
Also it let Karen Traviss write about the Mandalorians a bunch which is always just the worst.
There are a couple of moments of very intense interpersonal vulnerability that border on intimacy, and the entire time the game is staring at you going "You realize what you want out of this would be completely fucked up, right"
F exile / Atton and M exile Visas always felt like the more natural choices for me at least . Handmaiden is cool but she is very young emotionally so while its very clear she is into a male exile it feels like it would be weird . And disciple is boring and I I dont like him so I ignore him on any female playthroughs.
We'll go into it a bit later, but the "romance" options are in situations where nobody should be trying to get with them, most especially not the Exile
That really feels like a critique of how weird and fucked up the relationships in Knights of the Old Republic were
At the drop of a hat will I decide I am not worthy of love based on the fact that I'm in a bad mood that day
I can't imagine having the baggage any of these people have and going "yeah I could stand to holler at some cuties right now"
I uh, really don't have much to say about the writing thus far other than "I really, really like it". It feels a little contrived at times, but that's just being true to the source material. As far as the dialog goes, the fact that the differing tones actually make a damn difference in the way a conversation progresses is super neat, and something I wish more games of this ilk would do.
As far as character builds, I'm building up for a "throw a tableful of d20s at the problem" combat-y type. While it's somewhat sad that the game doesn't give extra attacks based on BAB... really, throwing 5 d20 at a problem is more than enough.
I have to say, replaying this, the combat is much, much worse than I remember. It's really bad. It's worse than Baldur's Gate or any of those games. It has a horribly obtuse system, tactical play is both advised and impossible and the character AI is gloriously bad.
I like the concept of the d20 combat system, but I feel like enemy base stats are set waaay too high in early game.
It is frustrating to watch your characters all shoot at a single merc for a full 2 minutes and hit nothing but air.
I'm thinking about re-rolling as a guardian and just forsaking all feats that don't focus on my defense and hit just to make it easier on myself. Brute-force my way through the game.
My main issue as far as whiffing is that I'm "banking" feats until I get my hands on a lightsaber. At which point I am immediately nabbing weapon focus+finesse which will give me a... +6 to attack rolls?
Once that happens I shouldn't be having much in the way of problems.
Man, Star Wars is just a hideous downer of a setting. Wake up on a mining facility where literally everyone has been murdered. Insinuations that the Mandalorians were genocided by the Jedi. Land on Telos and some random quest guy bet a woman as collateral.
Star Wars always seems to try for these high ideals and I find it very hard to engage with it when the value placed on life is slightly less than zero unless you're a space wizard.

Eh, it still has the same early game bump no matter what. Eventually you become an unstoppable murder machine no matter what you do really.

KotOR II isn't exactly representative of the tone in most Star Wars works.
Yeah it is, Luke's aunt and uncle get murdered and a planet is blown up in like the first 20 minutes of New Hope.

It's a D20 game and like all D20 games all you need to do is push Dex as high as you can and figure out how to abuse turn economy. Next thing you know it nothing can touch you, you can't miss, and your taking 2+ turns for every one of theirs.

The Mandalorians were appalling, and deserved every bit of the ass kicking and humiliation they got. They attempted multiple species genocide, genetic experiments, and deliberate bombing of "weak" worlds to "provoke" the Republic.
The reason the Jedi became so unbalanced fighting them, is it just not possible to fight a war against them and not want to slaughter them all.

Haven't started yet between watching AGDQ and finishing up FF XII:TZA but looking forward to catching up

I will consistently do as little as possible to succeed at combat in Bioware (or in this case, Bioware-adjacent I guess) games, whether it be dual-wielding to flail at enemies with as many blades as I can hold until they fall down, pistols & sniper rifles in Mass Effect, sword & board in DA (would be dual-wielding rogue usually but I mostly like the rogues they give me so they get to come and I fill the other non-magic role), or...
Fuck, how did Jade Empire go?

By the Empire, yeah. Most of the bad stuff in the movies can be laid at the Empire's feet. I never got the impression that it's a crapsack universe in general.

Jade Empire had little reason to use anything but the first few combat styles you got. I imagine you probably just used those.
The OT movies show us almost nothing that would indicate that there is any part of the Star Wars universe that isn't shithouse. Endor's forest moon has nice scenery I guess. That's about it.
I guess you could say that they imply there are nicer places (maybe Alderaan was nice) by saying "Jesus, this place sucks" everywhere they go, but I can't think of a single place or situation in those movies that seems like a good place to be.
One thing I thought was actually refreshing about the prequels, from a lore standpoint, is that they show you more than shitty Outer Rim planets. The prequel, for all its CGI, does a better job at showing a wider variation of planets, instead of 'desert shithole, snowy shithole, forest shithole'. It's something the TFA and TLJ, especially TFA, also really sucked at.

I'd argue that whatever planet they meet Maz on is pretty nice and one could probably hang out on that Casino world and have a decent time. It's literally just Space Monte Carlo and Monte Carlo is a decent place to live.

The casino world is why TLJ isn't as bad as TFA, and I liked that they showed that particular planet a lot. but wasn't the Maz's cantina literally built inside a ruined temple?
