This is a rush job as I got blindsided by it this morning, we’re going to a 7 year old’s birthday and were told he’s in love with the idea of playing D&D after Stranger Things. I’m not about to go out and buy him the 5e core books but I do want to know if there’s anything that could be recommended for him.

I’m already considering running a game for him and his friends but there won’t be time put one together before this afternoon. I do however have time to swing by the massive game store.

Mouse Guard is the one that always gets brought up but I've got no direct experience with it

There is literally a roleplaying game inspired by Stranger Things that sounds right up your alley. It's made by the guy behind Dead of Winter, and what I hear is a few other games (Jon Gilmour).

It's called Kids on Bikes. It's currently in pre-order but you can buy the pdf rulebooks and use those to play.

It's very rules lite, so I think it would suit your nephew very well.

edit: I misunderstood your post. I guess it sounds like your nephew was inspired by the kids PLAYING D&D, rather than playing a game reminiscent of stranger things itself. Still, it might be worth looking into.

Like this morning morning? There are a number of D&D board games that are basically rules light D&D but even those are probably over the head of a 7 year old on their own.

The starter set might be an idea if you're going to run them through it.

    This thing: http://dnd.wizards.com/products/tabletop-games/rpg-products/rpg_starterset

That's probably simple enough you won't need much prep to run stuff through it.

Honestly, I recommend the D&D boardgames, like Wrath of Ashardalon or Castle Ravenloft.

They're reasonably light, simple enough for a smart 7-year-old to pick up (especially with a parent helper), and definitely D&D flavored.

If you can find it, they did a remake of the board game Dungeon! from way back that is a great intro to dungeons and dragons lite and very accessible to young players.

Mouse Guard won out. Got him that and a box of six sided dice.

Perhaps on critical failures just have things go clowny instead of potentially deadly, depending on how well you think your son and his friends will handle their characters getting killed. And don't forget to do voices! Voices can really help with keeping it fun (especially for young newbies) when things go haywire!

Critical failures were always house roles bullshit anyway.

If you look for another game, Dungeon World is great for newer players.

No Thank You, Evil! is a pretty fun My First RPG game, too. Easy enough for them to learn to play and then be able to run themselves pretty quickly.

Well done! As a D&D lover, I approve! Go to the store and ask the consultant about this, he should explain everything to you in detail :)
