So Blank Check announced the subject of their next series at the end of this week's episode
It's Ang Lee! They're starting next week with an episode covering his first two movies.
I'm really intrigued by this choice, although I've only ever seen Crouching Tiger and Hulk. Glancing at Lee's filmography there's a lot of interesting stuff there (like Brokeback Mountain! I somehow forgot that he directed that.)
Something I hope they go into is how Brokeback Mountain quickly became the butt of every joke despite being a horrible tragedy.
Yeah, blatant homophobia had a big year that year. I remember those jokes having huge mainstream cachet, and they were all literally "lol two dudes kissing"

I’m pretty sure there was a joke at the Oscar’s that was just “lol, the cowboys are gay”
And I have the feeling that episode is going to be a lot of praise for its visuals, which is what I can't stand
May skip that one
Out of curiosity, are there other wuxia movies you like or is it just not a genre for you?
I will never say I hate a whole genre, I've been proven too wrong in the past
But in general, the floaty fighting style is about as hard of a turn off as it could possibly be. It makes everything feel like it has no weight (metaphorically, not just literally) and makes the fight feel like it has no stakes whatsoever. I love kung fu movies and I don't like, demand no wire-fighting at all, but when it looks like people are gently floating through the air like its a ballet, yea, I can't do that
I remember really liking Ang Lee's early movies (the Father Knows Best trilogy) so I'm glad they're covering them. Though it's also been forever since I've watched them so I don't know how well they hold up. The Wedding Banquet especially could be potentially rocky from a modern lens.
Like, it’s definitely there, but the vast majority of the actions in that fight aren’t super blatant wire work. The wire stuff is my least favorite part of the fight though.
And it’s way less than in Hero, like you said. The wire work in that movie drove me up the wall personally.

Yeah wire work is typically how people are driven up the wall

This may be the first time I’ve groaned and clapped at the same time.
I don't know if youd like Crouching Tiger but I will say its very very much not like that
Crouching Tiger has a very different feel, for sure.

Also it’s the 5th through the 8th (pre-show night on the 4th but I don’t bother) so depending on when the panel is (and weekends are the most popular days) taking time off work is not required.
That said I’ll be there all four days, crutches and all. Meeting up with my friend right now to put the finishing touches on our cosplay.

I...
Agree, but its a VERY low bar
wonder what happened to Penny Marshall though, Griffin announced they were doing it when he was on the Best Show in like January

Jeff and Dan are doing a panel at an anime expo
Dan Ryckert is flying to LA to watch and discuss anime
Crouching Tiger has a very different feel, for sure.

Well hm, in my decade plus of attending anime expo I may need to go to my first panel.
Yeah wire work is typically how people are driven up the wall
I always thought Hero was a super well made film with great fights and amazing cinematography. Too bad the thematic shit sucked ass.
This may be the first time I’ve groaned and clapped at the same time.
Oh I know, but I’ve seen and enjoyed other wuxia films

God I wish we could talk about that show.
The exact reaction I was hoping for!
what day and what expo
@AtomicTofu and I may be able to do this
It is next Wednesday
It starts July 5th and is at the LA Convention center. It is simply named Anime Expo.
So it's less it is the best and more it is better than the other one
(I also don't agree but do think it is way more bold than Incredible Hulk which is just a solid action flick)
Oh hey I guess Pooro is a cop now.
the director of massive cross over success Death Note says otherwise
Wait yaya who do you work for I feel like I havent heard this yet
