[Beat Saber] Guitar Hero + VR + Light Sabers.

Mr_GrinchMr_Grinch Registered User regular
So there's lots of discussion about Beat Saber going on in the VR thread and it might JUST be able to support a thread of it's own.

What is it?
It's a rhythm game, in VR, with Light Sabers.

Why should I care?
It's a rhythm game, in VR, with Light Sabers.

Can I have a bit more info?
Sure, you stand on a platform and red or blue block come towards you with arrows on. Your left hand is red, your right hand is blue. Slash the blue blocks with your right and red with left. To add to the difficulty, most of the blocks have a direction on them which tells you which way to cut them. Additionally there are red walls which you'll have to side-step or duck.

What platforms is it out on?
Currently it's an early access title on Steam and the Oculus store. The developers have said they'll be bringing it to PSVR but I suspect that'll be when it is out of Early Access.

What kind of content is available in Early Access?
10 official songs, which doesn't sound a lot but within that you have varying difficulty levels to conquer and an additional "No direction" and "One Handed" mode. No direction mode doesn't just strip the directions from the boxes, it gives you entirely new beat maps. Same goes for One Handed mode, only five or so of the tracks are available in this mode, and the only difficulty is "expert" but it's a fun additional challenge.

I don't like this kind of music
Me neither really, but when you're in the game it doesn't really matter! That said, you're well catered for by the community who have already started using an unofficial editor to come up with all crazy extra tracks. Some of them, as you'd expect, are ridiculously hard, but others are pretty good. The devs have said that an alpha version of the official editor will be released shortly (due last Friday but technical issues have pushed it back).

Cool, can I see what it looks like?
The mixed reality videos give a really good flavour of what it's like to play:

Official vids:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzVMKIHQht0

Darth Maul Dual Sabers:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQLdVoj6ec0

Poi Sabers:

And of course if you want to see what you'll look like playing the game in your living room, and not being particularly good, then this is me:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUOTQQ8mUYg

This looks exhausting
You're not wrong. It's pretty good exercise. I won't lie, my t-shirt normally comes off after the first couple of tracks (you're spared that in the video above) and I'm pretty much panting by the end of the expert tracks.

So what are you waiting for? Post up your scores! Add people to friends lists! Post videos! Let's see if we can actually keep a thread going about a single VR game...

Haven't played this much lately, a friend's had me roped into Stardew Valley's multiplayer beta, but that's on hold because we hit a persistent crash bug. Been at a bit of a plateau, I can get through Legend on expert, but haven't managed any of the other songs so far. Haven't really looked at what all is out there for custom tracks.

It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly, broken thing... And take away its pain.

I managed Legend and Escape, then one of the ones towards the bottom on expert. Those last two were pretty much 'skin of my teeth' though to make it through!

No lie, I have failed Expert $100 bills because I clipped the bomb on the last beat. Feels bad.

Expert is still kicking me around pretty bad. I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on the level editor.

But, Beat Sabre with summer isn't going to be the dream. I foresee getting heat exhaustion while indoors.

We should do player lists for Steam and Oculus in the OP.

My arms are a little sore, but I could use the exercise so I welcome it gladly, haha. Gonna try and make an hour of this a daily thing.

The jump to Expert is no joke, goddamn.

Took the time to setup custom songs.

So far only found one I really like that captures the spirit of the default song beatmaps while being a different music style, but also while making sure the saber sounds don't feel out of place with the music.

That does look pretty cool. I was mostly going to look for songs I know of for custom songs but I'm so uncool that I've never heard of 99% of them.

Playing this on Expert is bringing back my DDR habits, it's really something. I wasn't doing great at first, but then I got back into the old groove of eye tracking the farther notes to prepare for them, letting my brain autopilot the closest notes. Like, I don't need to stare at a sequence of opposite arrow'd blocks for one hand, I can set up my other hand for the next stream or the interlaced stream. Also helps me with not having to suddenly cut a down note when my arm's been lingering high, or vice versa.

  • crimsoncoyotecrimsoncoyote Registered User regular
Good to hear those same skills translate

  • RiusRius Globex CEO Nobody ever says ItalyRegistered User regular
Yeah! It's like, you don't want to rely on visual proximity for hitting the closest notes, you want to hit them in time to the music. If the notes are too close to read anyway, then you don't need to read them past the first. Hopefully that doesn't screw me up eventually, though it's hard to imagine throwing in a sideways note between a series of up and down notes.

Some interesting thoughts about how to design custom levels in the thread here:

For me the biggest thing is that creators need to understand that this is a game about lightsabers, not lightdrumsticks.

The core of Beat Saber is about slicing blocks, not hitting them. It's not like other rhythm games that reward minimalist movement and precision. It's a game about big movements and flow, and therefore any combination of blocks strung together needs to ensure that there is room to enjoy flourishes and back swings. If the speed and direction of the notes is such that player has no time to do more than merely tap the notes, that's not Beat Saber, that's turning it into a different game.

I noticed that the only way I made it through some of the later levels on Expert was with a sort of rapid-wrist-wiggle thing that seems to work for hitting a lot of repeated blocks close together in opposite directions, and while it works, it doesn't feel very satisfying.

In some ways I actually prefer playing on Hard to Expert for exactly that reason -- there's a bit more time to get really impressive-feeling swings together.

Played through some custom songs, if you haven't tried any yet, head to Beatsaver.com and download the "mod installer". You'll then have a Beatsaver menu in game, you can browse and install games from there in VR.

I tried a few, Franz Ferdinand - Take me out because I had fond memories of it in guitar hero but it didn't flow great, not a good start but everything after that was fun. My wife is a big Hamilton fan and she enjoyed watching me p play the rap battle, and the Pirates of The Caribbean theme is actually surprisingly fun. The majority didn't stack up to the originals but they're and awesome diversion.

Now my wife is waiting for someone to chart The Greatest Show

OK yeah this game is incredibly good. I can do the first five or so songs on hard, but man they get crazy. Hunnit dolla billz is probably my favorite, with escape a close second.

Going to try those customs tonight grinch, thanks for the heads up.

I guess there's a mod that replaces your sabers with, like, a pair of cestus? Just two little cutting arcs in front of your fists, and you play in no arrows mode.

Been playing all dang morning. So good. Definitely knocks audioshield out as my favorite VR game. So far managed to get As on hard in everything except Breezer. Breezer is kicking my ass with that breakdown. Tons of fun though.

Also tried $100 and Escape on extreme. Hahahah nope. Made it like 20 seconds in at best.

I am eagerly waiting for the level editor. This is the most fun I've had with VR in a long time. Clever game sneaking those squats in there too, it's a great workout.

I'm currently in the process of toppling all the expert leaderboards (there is an SS rating for the songs if you're a high score junkie like me).

Has anyone tested whether steam groups work for score wanking? If it does that'd be a lot easier than trying to get all of us friends with each other.

Some of these modded songs are silly, like that Dragonforce one. It's like, I get what they're shooting for but I think they kind of miss what makes the game fun.

I am a drummer, yes. Also I hope they don't change the scoring system - there was a discussion somewhere regarding that this was their nth iteration and were open to feedback. What makes this game great is the length of the swing is 95% of your score, so to really get better you have to move more and improve your technique.

Some are suggesting to give most of the points based on timing. If it goes that route then the game becomes largely indistinguishable from an air drumming game which will crush the soul of game.

EDIT: It's also very obvious these custom maps are made without the slash scoring system in mind. They look challenging and goofy, but I agree with you Casually - they don't look that fun.
