There have been what feels like a dozen small but notable fires in LA, Riverside, and San Bernadino
county today, but I think that Canyon Country one is by far the biggest at 850 acres so far. Locals news has been saying today through tomorrow is the strongest Santa Ana winds event of the season, so it's not surprising. It's 90°F+ in coastal LA, warmer inland, and single-digit humidity, with wind gusts in some areas topping 50mph. Would not be surprised if there are more fires or the ones already burning continue to grow.
There's also the Kincade Fire in northern Sonoma County in NorCal that's up over 10,000 acres burned.

They closed every single public school in the San Fernando Valley and Malibu today due to smoke.
It seemed like fire fighters were getting a handle on the Tick fire last night, but then the winds picked up and now the 14 freeway is closed and they expanded evacuations as the fire has continued to expand fairly rapidly to the southwest.
Re: the Kincade fire: looking like it might have been caused by a downed power line, even after all the blackouts to avoid fires started by downed power lines
In the Northern California, the destructive #KincadeFire continues its rampage in Sonoma County. It has scorched 23,700 acres- more than double from Thursday night - with 10% containment
PG&E is cutting power to about 940,000 people today because of the extreme fire weather conditions. Cutoffs were supposed to begin about 45 minutes ago for some people and will roll on throughout the day.
Folks in northern parts of the Bay Area: the extreme & prolonged wind and fire weather event tonight into Monday is the real deal. This is about as bad a fire weather forecast as I have ever seen in California, and that really is saying something after the past few years. Large-scale evacuations are already being issued for urban areas downwind of the Kincade Fire in Sonoma County, but if other fires ignite during the period of strongest winds tonight they will be so fast moving there may be little time to issue evacuation orders. My personal advice is to take any pre-evacuation orders very seriously today, and to be prepared to *leave before you receive official orders to do so* if new fires break out overnight or on Sunday.
Stay safe out there. I'll try to keep the comments section up to date, but I do strongly encourage folks to follow Weather West on Twitter (and Twitter in general is a good resource for up-to-the second fire information, as well):
I don’t know if there’s any other WWers in west Sonoma county but I just received this from a relative,
“Hi friends and family. I am just getting done with a meeting with Cal Fire and our station. For everyone wondering what to do. It's best to leave now. While there are 30 strike teams coming from outside of Sonoma county, they are expecting the worst. Main concern is when the winds reach 80 miles an hour trees will fall and block roads and getting out will be impossible. They are expecting the fire to jump 101 and once it does it will be impossible to stop. The aircraft can’t fly if winds are over 50mph. Best to evacuate now.”

Movement seems to be heading more south than west, as predicted. So it may not jump 101 (the highway is actually open again), but it's heading towards more populated areas.

not confirmed to be the cause yet though

and guess who's on that list
having like 8 hours warning of this shit when it's probably going to be out for several days is a real PROBLEM
10 MB gif showing hourly wind gust forecasts.
This shit looks like it's going to get BAD overnight in norcal. Take this seriously, and stay safe, everyone.
To the OCEAN
The NWS is reporting that they measured a 93mph gust near Healdsburg about 2 hours ago. That's wild!

Anyone who's ever been East Bay can vouch for how insane this is.
I wouldn't have thought a fire would jump it.
