I managed to scrape together a full set of Vigil of Heroes and do a strike for Zavala.

Spoiler about that quest. It's not much of a spoiler.
I was hoping there'd be more steps and some cool reward, like maybe work up to an exotic Vanguard class item. Nope, One and done.

That said, fuck Zavala. The quest turn-in text says that Zavala has a hard time trusting again once his trust is broken but if I work at it I can repair the relationship.

    Fuck you, dude.

If I could have I'd have dropped his Hive-damned 517 boots off the side of the fucking tower and told him we can 'repair the relationship' when he's ready to thank me for avenging his best friend and apologize for his attitude about it.

So, Blind Well. Tell me things. What PL do I need to be for Tier 1 and 2? I assume it's not soloable at a realistic PL... is it doable for a fireteam or is this another Escapement Pugilism situation where you need 6-9 people for it to happen?

fucking hell, my daily heroic mission weekly got reset. I was 2/3 and now I'm 0/3.

Worst part is, I know the weekly reset things resetting are all just 500 crap, and since I didn't get to finish it before it reset (fix your shit bungie) I don't even know if doing it will give me anything but a 500.

From what they've said you only get a 500 out of the reset thingies if you've already gotten a reward. So if you do the 3 again I think you should get a legit reward.

I know I'm late to the party bitching about this, but whoever thought it was a good idea to require 5 invader kills for the first step of ace of spades seems was incorrect.

It is the sort of thing that makes me wonder what the hell Bungie even does when they do internal testing.

I've played several games now and no one invades outside of the final primeval fights, and when they do, they have Sleeper and you never see them anyway.

I feel like the fact that you have to kill invaders and can't get the kills as an invader has to be a bug.

I got the kills but it's absurd. The only way I got them was lucking into matches where someone on the other team was really keen on invading but was really fucking bad at it. Three of my 5 kills were the same person in the same match who kept invading and then dicking around trying to shotgun people so it was easy to just stay out of shotgun range and burn them down. First kill was a complete accident where they were fighting other teammates and I got a lucky across-the-map shot with Crimson. Last kill was after we killed our Primeval. Dude had invaded just before and was just standing there and I managed to HC him to death before the match ended.

I recommend, if you can, running two hand cannons. I did Crimson primary and Trust secondary. You can empty a full clip of either into an invader and they won't die, and probably you don't have time to reload.

I also have no idea how you're meant to do the Triumph where you get killed by an invader, respawn, and kill them unless they're camping the spawn for some reason.

There's no reason to run two handcannons really. Just pick one you like and pair it with something that can quickly strip the overshield like Fighting Lion or Telesto.

I'm halfway okay at hitting people with a hand cannon. I'm absolute shit at hitting people with Fighting Lion and Telesto.

Eh the invader with a full shield has a pretty huge advantage on you, and in the time it takes to sink a full clip of HC rounds into them they probably sleepered you twice by then. Fighting Lion I guess has a learning curve but Telesto is dead easy to use. I'm just saying its much quicker and more efficient to try to strip the shield quickly instead of trying to land 2-3 shots just to get the shield off.

Probably true. I'm really bad at PvP and haven't even tried to use an FR against a player since sometime in early D1. I like shotguns because they fire immediately and I only have to hit you once or twice. I initially tried doing shotgun + HC but getting into shotgun range meant I didn't have time to swap to the HC to finish them off without getting shotgunned or punched to death. The double HC strategy admittedly only works if the invader is really bad at invading... but if they're even halfway decent then my only chance of killing them is getting the drop on them while they fight someone else.

For those of you getting ready to raid, plan on your progression slowing down a whole lot when you hit 520.

I got to 524 on my hunter, which helped my alt get a head start. But it’s slow going because once you’re at 520, all daily and most weekly powerful rewards will only come at +1 of your light level. From what I’ve read, once I’m done slowly getting all +1 gear, only things from the nightfall and the dreaming city will act like normal powerfuls did previously.

So put that in mind as you plan for your raids.

Everyone struggling with the invader handcannon kills, try Sturm and Drang

Use the sidearm to kill mobs then switch to your now overcharged cannon and plug the invader full of holes

I used Crimson, it took two games but I got lucky. I probably would have had it in one if I didn't get super Stars and Stripes Captain America slamfucked into a wall by a shield cabal while I was ads. But I went in looking to lose those games until I had that step done so it was a lot of edge camping the maps and getting a bead seeing this asshole looking at my team fat with motes. Honestly Bungie needs to stop forcing people into crucible for shit like this because it just makes it kind of unpleasant for everhone involved

I've actually been having a non-awful time in QP. I've got a concrete goal, and it's achievable. Ace of Spades part is done, now I've got to get shotty kills.

So, @Koz linked me the reddit post regarding the leveling structure, and my feeling was that a lot of it is (as it acknowledges) speculation that disregards the consequences of randomness (like making no overall progress because you keep getting boots) and that it's likely that few (if any players) managed to get to 520+ without completing their Weekly milestones along the way. Furthermore, it would be bewildering, if not a totally Bungie thing, to so grossly reduce the relevance of Weekly milestones for players that reach this "pre-Endgame" threshold.

As such, I'm not wholly convinced that for folks like you and I — I'm 525 — our light gains will be that much of struggle next week, outside those of us that are absurdly unlucky, like my dear friend @rndmhero and his collection of incrementally more powerful boots.

That said, I do expect the Raid difficulty to be very high in its first week, with most folks seeing swords (if not skulls) next to enemy names.

I have several loot and event goals for the season.

    1) The raid. Having so much fun exploring the dreaming city
    2) Malfeasance. I need all the handcannons
    3) Gambit stuff. All the gambit stuff. The cool secret emblems and the Dregden title and everything. So fun
    4) Luna's Howl. Good grief do I hate competitive. 10 matches for step 1 done, managed to get up about 70 points net gain. Going to take a loooong time
    5) Good rolls of a few select guns that I fall in love with. So far that's the dreaming city handcannon; the one I have has auto-loading holster which is just a waste on my hunter.

Anyone else want to weigh in?

On my second character I’m doing many dailies & weeklies after I hit 520, so I’m taking care to pay attention to what light level things drop as. It’s not that weeklies can no longer give a big bump to your overall light level, they have for me when they upgraded a weak slot; it’s that every drop that I’ve seen had been my light level + 1. So at 522 light on my alt, I got a big upgrade from a 523 chest piece, but I’ve yet to see anything but a light level +1 drop from the weeklies. Once you don’t have any weak pieces, that’s really going to hamper your climb.

I don’t find it particularly bewildering, it fits with tbeir overall stated goals.

Gah, I used a Gambit rank up reward to infuse, so I wound up deleting my only Gambit helmet. I forgot about the whole "win a match with a full set of armor." It's odd that Gambit doesn't have tokens and rank up rewards, unlike Crucible and vanguard. Here's hoping I get another helmet sometime, because Sleeper is no fun.

Also, this expansion remains real real good.

For the folks still working on the invader kills, there are a few things that worked for me.

    1) Play with a PA group who will soften them up and let you have the kill. Friends make anything better.
    2) Use Crimson.
    3) Shoulder charge is enough to strip their shield and leave them absolute without killing them. Several of my kills were a shoulder charge into a quick follow-up.

Guys the Misfit auto rifle shreds; I'm not going to say that it's like a Doctrine because that's probably too much but if you can get one with a stability assist perk it just melts people. I get the whole appeal of precision weapons but sometimes blazing away with an auto like an idiot is just fun.

I hate how luck based it can be, especially in the race to get geared up for the raid, though.

Like you and I did the exact same challenges and stuff for our characters. Your main hit 524, mine barely hit 518 after getting lots of non-upgrade powerful rewards. My alt then barely got to 520, and my third alt only hit 520 as well. Prime engrams have bumped my main to 522 since. Meanwhile it sounds like you are gonna hit nearly 530 with your alt(s). That's awesome for you, but frustrating to hear to someone like me that's done every powerful rewards across three characters and is a good 30% behind in the endgame now despite doing nothing differently.

I feel it's bewildering because I don't believe that they've implemented sufficient/appropriate non-leveling incentives to support such a harshly regimented progression structure. While few may be at 520+ currently, it is still a value that is only just beyond the "I beat the campaign" baseline. To then say that from that point on the majority of your Weekly Ritual activities are of diminished value, that they don't drop "Powerful Gear" (by the definition of that term throughout Y1), is an absurd misstep if one of your other goals is to bring back that "Destiny is the only game I play" quality that they want to return to.

That said, there's clearly a lot of content that's time-gated, and most of the Weeklies are framed as "quest steps". So I recognize this is all ridiculously pre-emptive, and that the coming weeks may show that progression and incentives are as they should be.

Speaking of all that, though, I consider my Destinycation a smashing success. All three characters have reached the Dreaming City waiting for the Raid and have completed every single powerful engram for this first week. I was able to get Ace of Spades last night. Warlock is at 522, with Hunter and Titan both at 520.

This is a really really good expansion. I loved the story and the accompanying lore. It's the best they've done since Taken King and I feel like its surpassed it in many respects.

Loadouts are back to their former glory and even better than D1. Bows are amazing. Perks are good again and the randomization makes every drop a new discovery. Armor synergy is back.

All the new subclasses that I've played so far feel game changing and fun. Guardians are poweful again and Destiny is so much better for it. PvE and PvP are fun again. I'm addicted to the sandbox in a way that I haven't been since D1Y1.

The levelling and progression feel pretty good. Like I said above I might just be bitter due to my extremely bad luck I came up against. So many of my poweful drops were for my then highest PL item and it ended up being a sidegrade at best or a downgrade at worst. My worry is that my bad luck will prevent me from being Raid ready.

The Dreaming City is everything I wished it would be and more. Its gorgeous and mysterious and interesting. I can't wait till more secrets are discovered and the Raid opens up. I'm excited to see how the area changes and opens up as time goes on.

They hit it out of the park with this expansion. This is easily the best Destiny has been. Probably ever. And I had so much fun over the past 4+ days.

I think folks trying to gear up for a week 1 Raid completion are setting themselves up for disappointment.

Not that you shouldn't gear up! Just that I worry the stress of week 1 completion will sour opinions on the raid. It is possible that it will be functionally impossible given the nature of the power level grind. So if it doesn't happen, just regroup after gaining more power. Leviathan had this symptom for some folks, and I would hate for that to happen again, particularly after such good feels for Destiny again. Temper those expectations, put fun first, and avoid burnout. Because thisnis the best D2 has been so ride that as long as you can.
