I always imagine Lovecraft as Reducto from Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law but instead of being terrified/obsessed with size, it's, you know, people of color.

It's a boring and rambling story that also basically boils down to "the real evil in this neighborhood is a bunch of non-white people living there, and the villainous madman is a white dude who hangs out with them"

    It's bad

You regret giving them money because their studio, which created a Lovecraftian game, is named after a Lovecraft story...?

Okay... but... why would you buy a Lovecraft inspired game if you hate Lovecraft that much?

    arright, so

first of all i'm not really into cosmic horror or whatever, so much as I like dark fantasy styled stuff (which Darkest Dungeon resembles a lot more at first glance, with the knights and skeletons running around, and, well, whoops)

but that genre doesn't really end with Lovecraft, either. Even in games spaces there are works like Bloodborne that have more interesting takes on the genre than a lot of what that dude produced.

and below that, you've got people who maybe use the aesthetic and trappings of the genre without really understanding the underpinnings of lovecraft's work. Folks who maybe don't get the themes or whatever. This is kind of where I thought Darkest Dungeon sat, ultimately? The parts of that game that made me frown the most (the cultist class and etc.) felt more like maybe the devs just hadn't really critically examined the works they were drawing from, and that they were just unintentionally reproducing the shitty bits to some extent

but the fact that they named themselves after one of his stories that is notoriously bad, and notable only for being especially racist? That reads like a dog whistle to me, honestly, and makes me 1000% less willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on the shitty bits

I think Lovecraft gets a bit of a pass because the image of an uptight, mentally ill Yankee who was so terrified of minorities and immigrants that he rarely left the house and spent his days writing stories about monsters who are obviously thinly veiled minorities and immigrants does the full loop from disturbing to sad to kinda funny, actually.

    Nah

I'll buy that. I just find Lovecraft too ridiculous to hate and too nasty to pity.

I did like when American Vampire did Robert E. Howard's death as the world's most pathetic ghost story.

I enjoy lovecraft's writing and the atmosphere he builds. I also realize he was astoundingly racist. I realized that when I was reading one of his stories and had to look up a word that I didn't know that turned out to be a racial epithet I had literally never even heardof before. It's the big content warning I give to anyone reading it. Lovecraft is an engaging read, and he's good at making normally innocuos things spooky, but hoo boy, that motherfucker was super racist.
