Presumably, you can’t play it offline at all. Like the PC version. The game might be built so that you need to connect to their servers.

To be fair, I did turn off the game shortly afterward because I just wanted to check, so maybe I could have waited and it would go "oh you're okay."

This is pretty common, I even get this message on the PS4 if I log into Diablo before my friends list boots up. Game still works fine but something about their leaderboard verification lags behind the game start up/ Console boot cycle.

While the look is new to Smash Bros, it's taken from an old Game and Watch game that has been reworked in reissues in the past to remove the racist imagery. Considering at a minimum localization teams have pointed out the issue with it in the past you'd think they'd have known better now.
