Though I have to say, I think amongst all the various spider-verses we've ever had, I think my favorite might be
also was that oscar isaac as miguel?
It's real hard for me to pick a favourite moment, but
Ending
Honestly as impressive as the animation is, I think what's most impressive is just how well-grounded the movie is in character. It knew exactly who its characters were, what its world was, what story it wanted to tell, and how all those pieces combine, which let it be genuine in all its beats, dramatic and comedic alike.
He only had them after the spider-bite because he wasn't the protaganist of a comic before that
Once he got bit, he became the lead hero and there come the word bubbles and thought boxes and that is SO COOL
Like Scott Pilgrim's "YO COMICS, RIGHT?" visual mentality married to Speed Racer's manic visual energy, but it's all about goddamn Spidermans.

Instead it was in, like, the first 20 minutes of this one and instead of a climax is was the push to cause Miles to become a hero himself
That's so good!!!!!
(I did keep listening for 'Don't do it like me; do it like you' from the trailer because it's so good, but the whole film is that.)
I love how it looks, how it sounds, what it communicates. When the soundtrack dropped Biggie a huge grin just spread across my face (or rather, the grin that had been there the whole time grew even wider). It's so smart; it gets to the roots of the character and the themes of family, responsibility and identity without missing a beat or compromising the story they wanted to tell. I've ordered the art book so I can really take in all the little details that it felt crammed full of.
I've been a big Spider-Man fan since I was a kid, I loved the Animated Series and even collected the UK Spectacular comics. Miles would have been my guy growing up, it's so cool that kids today have him and Gwen. Between this, Homecoming and Insomniac's game, it's been a fantastic couple of years for the character. I can't wait for more, and I'm hoping they get Kamala in the mix soon - I don't know much about her, but I'd love to learn.
Jake Johnson might be my new favorite Spider-Man, which is a wild thing to say
They kind of got there in the end, but I wouldn't have minded just a little more, since that whole arc for him was really interesting to me
Other thoughts
This Green Goblin design is my new favorite
I loved Peter encouraging Gwen and Miles; "That was adorable, you two!" was a line that got me good
I Legit did not see that coming.
It just excels at everything it tries to do. Miles is a compelling, genuine lead. Peter and Gwen are fantastic supporting players with satisfying arcs of their own. The villains are menacing, cool and have good motivation. Its hilarious, it has heart, it is stylish as hell.
It's just top to bottom fantastic, I have absolutely no complaints.
And that's even before factoring in that this is, by a wide margin, the most loving embrace of comic books as a medium that has been done on film. It is an animated movie that isn't a full-on children's flick or comedy (which is pretty rare), uses comic book techniques like thought boxes and word bubbles without feeling extraneous and clunky, is so visually inventive and stunning they literally developed new software just to make the film and presents the most ludicrous of comic book plotlines (HEY HERE IS A WHOLE MULTIVERSE OF SPIDER-FOLKS INCLUDING ONE WHO IS A PIG!) in an incredibly accessible, fun way while never losing sight of Miles as the story's emotional core.
It's one hell of an achievement
Side note on that
Regarding the Peter of Miles' dimension:
Until now, I was very pro-Parker, and avoided Miles for a long time ever since his origin, since they killed off Peter so Miles could have the spotlight in Ultimate.
Ultimate Spoilers
But turns out after risking his life a bunch of times, up to the point it killed him and only by means of having crazy spider powers being the thing that allowed him to recover from literal death decided it was time to retire.
Of course now his whole universe is gone sort of maybe and Miles is in 616, along with some other refugees from Ultimate that don't include Peter so...
Peter died in a way that wrapped up his story. A few real world months later Miles is revealed and his opening story lines are all people telling him trying to be spiderman post peter is fucked up
I loved (and did not expect, until moments before the reveal) what they did with Ock, although I'm torn on her arms. I think if they were rubbery without the actual-octopus-look and suction cups I'd be more on board. I didn't realize until he didn't show up at the end, but did Norman... die? Seems like a bit of a waste. Making Scorpion Latinx is cool, but I didn't like the actual design at all. Kinda hope we meet an alt-reality version that goes in another direction. Prowler's costume was phenomenal
I disagree that the three supporting Spiders had enough to connect with them (not enough for me, anyway). Peni's robot dying didn't quite feel earned to me-- I understand, logically, that it being her father's work should provoke an emotional response for her, but it didn't do anything for me because I don't know her. Noir and Porker seemed like pure (and good!) comic relief to me.
I liked that they used hiphop for Miles and for the movie as a whole, but I wish some of the score (or at least Peter's theme) was more Spider-Man-y. Something akin to SpecSpidey's theme. It would be really cool if they incorporated that sound into the hiphop
I like the stinger because of the promise of future-Latinx-Spidey for the sequel, but I don't get the hype around the old cartoon scene. But I also can't figure out why people get so excited about 90's ugly-costume-Flash in the Arrowverse crossover, so must be some nostalgia blind spot of mine
All in all, it's probably my second favorite Spidey flick, after Homecoming. SpecSpidey is probably still my favorite Spider-Man thing overall. This sits comfortably up there with them though and I'm definitely recommending it to friends, planning to see it again with a buddy of mine on Wednesday
I hope we get flashbacks of Lizard Peter in Gwen's movie, that's a story I've always wanted more of and seeing it in motion could be really powerful, I think
Pine Spidey deserves to be in the poll! He doesn't deserve to win, but he was good!
Yeah I also liked it a lot with some quibbles
Here's the sad part where Peter dies, here's the sad part where Aaron dies, here, in the climax of the movie, is the sad second where the robot dies
It's just hitting that same kind of beat a few too many times, it's overwhelmingly tragic to the point where I almost wonder if it's even appropriate for kids to see it
the other thing that kind of drove me nuts was how incredibly overboard they went with "get it? I said a thing I said earlier in the movie, but now with greater context and meaning due to these new circumstances and experiences we've had!"
and again in a vacuum I liked all of these moments a lot, but as a whole it was too much
I also definitely felt like the supporting cast members were pretty underused; Gwen didn't feel like she had an arc to me, Noir didn't do anything memorable besides "heh, that's Nicholas Cage," and Spider-Ham only got the one real scene to go full Looney Tunes, and outside of the characters with superpowers I feel like they didn't even say what Miles' mom's name is? Aunt May gets more character moments than she does, which I find odd
It was also A LOT, so I think I need to see it again with an eye on the background details. I'm sure I missed a billion things.
