There is a painting of the painting in the painting

I reorganized my pantry. Not a huge change, but things are a bit more organized and all the expired stuff is gone! Buddy is happy about it at least.

We redid our basement; changed old worn out carpet for new 'luxury vinyl planking', repainted/cleaned walls, moved some cupboards around, put more storage on top of them, mounted insert fireplace in them, new couch that doesn't unfold into a bed and is thus comfy to sit on, which is what we do 99.99% of the time:

(also purged a bunch of stuff that has sat in cupboards untouched for a while and DVDs that we are never going to watch in physical format now that netflix et al exist)

Not really photo-worthy but my parents came to town last week and in honor of that I dropped a bundle on a new doormat (the constant heat-humidity cycle here fried the old one to the point where the grips crusted onto the marble floors), and new bathmat and towels for the guest bathroom. I also hung a piece of art my friend made and gave to me, because it's hilarious and obviously belongs in the bathroom:

But tell me about the rings

Rings were made from a couple of sheets of 3/4" plywood glued together; I cut out the basic shape with a jigsaw, rounded them off with a router, then lots of sanding. So they're (very) not perfectly round, but they're smooth enough for my hands. Straps are just some webbing and a cam buckle to make it adjustable. The ceiling's too low enough to do all the different sorts of ring exercise, but it still gives scope for more sorts of thing than just a pullup bar.

I leave the lid up because if I want to go for a wazz in the middle of the night I don't need to add another step to my process. It's hard enough walking to the bathroom without hitting a wall.

Hello home fashion thread! My wife and I finally got curtains for our living room, so I'm finally allowed show it off to strangers!

    And from the other side:

We've been here since November, but the curtains have been a comedy of errors so I haven't been able to flex my decor. The art on the right is Double Amore by Chris DeRubeis. My wife fell in love with it while we were in Vegas last year, so I had it shipped here surreptitiously for use as an Xmas gift. I then had to find ways to steer the decor to a black and red theme without letting on that I'd already made the decision. The couches were purchased before she knew of the painting's existence, and the other art we already had around our old place.
It's hard to get a good shot of the DeRubeis because it's not paint, it's some metal etching process, so the red is really shiny and cool. But here's more what it looks like:
    8r6294fp310w.jpg

I have never seen someone that looks more like they are from Las Vegas than Chris DeRubeis.

Organizing still fails me. However, I've got the next week off. My primary duties are going to be caring for my folks' dog and checking in on my dad, who is staying in respite care while mom (the primary caretaker) is out of town for a week.

I know that more shelving operates against getting shit cleaned. But at the same time, without some place to put things, I'm never going to get stuff cleaned. So here we are. Hopefully this will help me put away things and stop the "wave.

I'm not a fan of the pure white. My TV stand is the faux walnut, and the large 4x4 Kallax units that dominate my back wall are "natural" color, a beige. I much prefer the latter. But I don't think they make that color anymore.

I was originally going to get 3 of these units. I'm glad I only went with 2, as now that I have it home there just isn't room to put a 3rd one there.

Edit: Of course, it is going to fill up quickly...

We hit the same thing when trying to get more stuff to match previous Ikea 'sort of light brown fake wood' coloured, because 'light oak' or whatever it was called isn't an option these days. White is about the only thing that is always going to be around, frustratingly.

Those white particle board things are like the perfect thing to hit with some krylon. They have one that's kind of like "stone" that's kind of like a brown granite that matches that cheap oak veneer you get from places like walmart.

I made a toy collector's chat thread in D&D a couple months back. Maybe a true collection thread (including how to get rid of such things) might be warranted.

and now i'm looking at weighted blankets because i remembered my therapist mentioning i should give it a shot ("Target has them! Target has bed displays, right?"), and a brief spell under the one on her couch was encouraging.

but i have champagne tastes in addition to the Sleep and occasional Sensory Issues, so OEKO-tex certified organic cotton with lead-free glass seems like a good choice. (also, machine wash- and dry-able, which many are spotclean only. nope!) twin size is ideal but i'm less sure of the 12 lbs -- too light is just gonna distract me, and too heavy, i'll feel even more restless and confined. i saw a larger 12 lb polyester version at Home Goods today for 50 bucks, but that's a lot just to test the concept, i don't know anyone who might want one as a gift, and i have no hustle atm to resell it.

Holy crap, people weren't kidding when they said that some paints are better quality than others.

We were in B&Q for some other DIYing stuff, and found a colour swatch that we liked. Rather than schlepping over to a proper paint place we just got the paint mixed there. Suffice to say that we're going to have to redo the whole room with proper stuff, even the edging came out horrible streaky.

Oh yeah, painting is a horrible horrible thing to have to suffer through. Prep is VITAL (and takes literally forever and 90% of the total effort involved), and good quality paint makes all the difference to the end result.

The site you linked accepts returns within 30 days of purchase, assuming you're in the US. If you can afford to eat the cost of shipping, maybe order one and try it out?

Also, in the FAQ it says you can email them to order a refurbished blanket (i.e., one that was used but returned in Like New or Very Good condition) at a discount; no idea if those are returnable or not.

    @pooka - Meh.com has a $35 weighted blanket today, 15#s, lead-free beads. Not organic cotton, though.

Otherwise, yeah give it a try like Calica said and return if it doesn't work out.

oh belieb you me, i am on that refurbished tip -- i emailed at ~midnight on the 3rd and had a reply in 6 hours. !!
the twin size are $80 + ~10 for shipping, final sale, so no returns.
but for 60 bucks off and pretty comparable pricewise to some less well-made blankets, or with materials i don't want, i think i'm willing to take the chance on seeing if it's too light. just gonna wait a bit to mellow my impulsivity and decide if i still want one.

the blanket on meh has polyester wadding and is dry-clean only; if you don't mind those details, there are plenty similar on amazon around that price if you don't pick that one up today. i'm not trying to be snotty; i appreciate the heads-up, but i am particular, especially about sleep-related goods.

Delivery dudes are setting up my brand-new dining table yaaaay! Also got 6 chairs!

They did not speak a lot of English, I thought they were speaking Spanish at first (they only said a few small things to eachother) so when I asked them if they wanted something to drink I asked one of the dudes in Spanish and he seemed confused and

I just heard one of them say "da" to the other. Whoooooooops completely wrong language ND

Once they're done assembling the table I'm going to crawl under it

Just only communicate in Spanish. Have them think that is the only language that you know.
