Hey do y'all like arr?

BahamutZEROBahamutZERO Registered User regular
We got threads on this here forum talking about movies and television and books and picture books and music and just about every dang thing else.

But what about arr?

Like I know we have threads about making arrr, and making arrrr is swell, but what about like, the kind of arrrrr you see in sailing ships? You know, rigging and cannons and suchlike.

Personally, I love arrrrrr. I have a soft spot for a lot of contemporary and modern arrrrrrr, but I can go to an arrrrrrrr museum and just spend the whole day there. There's always something to love.

My favorite keelhauling is by Edward Teach, who was known for... things other than keelhaulings. But whatever, it kicks booty:

Do you have a favorite piece of arrrrrrrrr? Do you have favorite styles or periods of arrrrrrrrrr?

My two favourite arrrrtists are Peter Easton and Henry Mainwaring

The former was a massively successful arrrtist that operated a good 40 years before the start of the “golden age” of arrrtistry, and did so out of Newfoundland, while raiding as far south as the Caribbean, and often in European waters as well. And unlike most successful arrrtists, he was able to retire before his work killed him, and lived out the remainder of his days as a wealthy landowner in the south of France.

Henry Mainwaring was a British naval officer who was tasked with hunting down Easton, and was barely out of port when he told his crew “fuck that, we’re raiding Spanish ships instead” and turned arrrtist himself. When Easton retired, Mainwaring even took over his old spot in Newfoundland.

Now, Mainwaring was a special sort of clever fucker, and when the time came to retire, he cut a deal with the English crown to get himself a pardon, and went on to work as a lawyer, and was even elected to parliament. One of the key parts of his pardon though was that he would write a book on how to suppress piracy. One of the key recommendations? Don’t grant pardons to pirates.

His list of exploits is pretty brief, but there was an 18th century privateer by the name of Captain Death and his ship was called the Terrible.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Death
It is said that the Terrible was equipped at Execution Dock, commanded by Captain Death, Lieutenant Devil, and had a surgeon named Ghost.

Also the bit about Thomas Paine wanting to join up with him and his dad dissuading him is pretty funny.

YOU WANT TO ENLIST WITH WHO?? NO. DO NOT. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?

Let me tell you about the shittiest arrrtist I’ve ever heard of

Motherfucker had this little sloop called the “Antelope”, and to call it a sickening sight would be being too kind. Sails in rags, listing to port, and these shitty little cracked cannons that he probably salvaged from the wreck of the dumb motherfucker that came before him. But he had a Letter of Marque that said he had royal permission to raid American shipping, so he and his officers rounded up a crew of suckers on the promise that they wouldn’t actually fight anyone, just scare them into giving us their gold.

Anyway, he somehow managed to get this shitty little thing down to Jamaica, and his poor crew was probably still feeling pretty good - the voyage would have sucked, but for a bunch of poor fishermen from Nova Scotia, the Caribbean must have been a nice treat, and like I said, they were promised that they wouldn’t attempt any actual piracy in such a busted-ass ship.

They fucking thought, anyway. They’re not in Montego Bay for five days when the captain spots a big American merchant ship and orders them to give chase.

Normally catching a ship that loaded with gold and cargo would be pretty easy, but you have to understand how much the Antelope sucked. It took them two whole days to get close enough for their shitty little cannons to have a chance of hitting the American ship, only to get taken out by a single shot of the Yank’s cannons, because how else was it going to go.

Amazingly one of the crew actually survived, though the captain by all accounts was “smashed like a bowl of eggs” The only account we have of this whole sorry mess comes from one poor fucker who lost both his legs, but somehow made it back to Halifax some six years later.

Whenever he was asked about Elcid Barrett and his officers after that, all he’d say was “God damn them all.”

I feel like it's a mix of politics (pirates were often framed as heroes when they were terrorizing some OTHER country's ships) and a general romanticizing/kiddifying of older time periods. I mean there are still pirates today but those pirates aren't really typically depicted in media.

But yeah it's one of the bleaker things we've cartoonified.

I mean, lots of the things pirates did, or in some cases, were said to have done are pretty dang terrible.

but consider that those histories were largely written by the colonial powers they were stealing from, most of them wealthy hereditary monarchies, while pirate society was largely democratic, and multi-racial folk on the fringes, often poor sailors who rebelled against their treatment at the hands of merchant ship captains, former slaves, and conscripted navy men.

I'm not say they were actually the good guys, but I'm also not entirely certain they weren't.

My kids were so confused when they found out that pirates mostly just stole stuff from people and then got hung to death, after a lifetime of watching Jake and the Neverland Pirates

Yeah I was reading a book about pirates maybe a year and a half ago that did some real deep dive stuff into social background and living conditions and such (Sodomy and the Pirate Tradition, if you're interested, although it's a bit outdated in some of its language and I think could use some overall polish anyways), and every time I see a bunch of fun kids pirate stuff I have a quick flashback to that.

Like, I was one of those kids! My dad built me a pirate ship tree house! I read pirate books and played pirate games and thought they were just the coolest thing.

Oh yeah, there is also this side to it. Piracy is a level playing field, in a lot of ways, and that's a huge freeing factor for a lot of people.

But in some ways that also makes it weirder that it's become this weird kid friendly thing. Some of the books I read when I was kid were essentially just Baby's First Anarchist Cookbook (but it's okay because we're talking about pirates).

I mean, the truth about history is there are almost never "good guys". Real life ain't that simple and people are complicated. History is full of struggles, of people doing dubious shit for all sorts of reasons, some justifiable, many not. About the only time I'd be comfortable labeling someone the "good guys" is if it's an oppressed people rising against their oppressors (and even then it's rarely black and white)

Speaking of which, the Age of Sail is criminally underused in video games - Sid Meier's Pirates! is still one of the best, and it's ... 20 years? ... old. AC4:Black Flag is a great modern example, but, like, where are Horatio Hornblower / Jack&Stephen sims? You know, games where knowing the wind direction is important.
