I feel like the main things that Goku didn’t use in this movie are both on the list of things that half kill him to use.
As my response is somewhat minor
The fact that this felt somewhat....minor? Is what really made this movie for me.
Freeza’s wish is dumb and he just out and out states “ Hey I’m not goin there to throw down but this might be fun!” after they find Paragus an Broly are just really nice touches.

Movie spoilers
I like that Broly wasn’t really ever considered a world-ending threat. He was strong and uncontrollable, but everyone instantly acknowledged him as someone who was being manipulated, and never wanted to actually harm him, just get him to stop fighting.
And also that Whis still could have took him out in an instant if he were so inclined.
I wonder about that
The instant Goku merged with Vegeta they recognized that Broly wasn't the kind of threat they'd be able to stop without killing him, and Vegeta's pragmatism took over
Like, they let Freeza go at the end of the movie for no particular reason, but when it came down to it they were very much trying to kill Broly, and I think they actually tried to ice him on multiple occasions in that fight, it just refused to take
Movie was real great but my enjoyment was seriously dampered by this jackass sitting directly behind me explaining what was happening on screen basically every 30 seconds in a big dumb jokey voice. I couldn't tell of it was a bit or not
I liked how intimate this movie was and I hope they continue with that where the big important stuff is arcs in a TV show and the movies smaller character focused stuff.
Frieza says that the reason why he uses the other forms is specifically to hold back, not to conserve energy.
I always liked the idea that Freeza's transformations weren't really like, unlocking additional power, but adapting to his enemy's techniques
Not that it's actually supported by anything, but for some reason I read it that way at first and I always liked the idea more than just like, unlocking more power levels.
Like on namek he fights one dude, it's not a total asskicking, then he transforms to fight them better, and dominates. Rinse and repeat a few times. Then he finally tries to adapt to super saiyan goku, and that time he doesn't come out ahead.
A trap is for fish: when you've got the fish, you can forget the trap. A snare is for rabbits: when you've got the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words are for meaning: when you've got the meaning, you can forget the words.
The main things about Super that can be a little confusing are:
-if it wasn't in the manga, it ain't canon
-Master Roshi apparently could've been a lot more helpful than he ever was during Z
-in general, power levels are a lot more loosey goosey
It's one of the very best things about super. Like there's a big swath of DB stuff where like, power levels are the ONLY thing that matter, and you can fool the other fighter a dozen times over, none of it will matter unless your number is bigger than his number, or your attacks will just straight up bounce off of him. Which is fucking laaaaaaame.
Super manages to really move away from that. Both with weaker characters having the potential to pull surprises, and then also introducing some folks like Beerus who are like just not beatable by simply increasing power levels.

We have thirty Gokus.
We can have two Brolys.

I keep forgetting that Kale is the SSG (Super Saiyan Green) in that crew. My brain keeps wanting it to be the one named for cauliflower, because that’s similar to broccoli.

That was a brilliant mislead. Nobody expected the shy lesbian
I have a podcast now. It's about video games and anime!Find it here.
Kale was more fun in the manga. She kept trying to do a sneaky ninja-thing and support her boss without being noticed. She was noticed pretty fast, though.
One of the things about the action in this movie that I realized on reflection
It's not just Goku. Everyone has their own fighting style!
Broly actually has two. The first one is he's a scared kid who doesn't want to fight but just takes tons of big-ass swings. But once he loses his shit he... actually fights like an Oozaru? Like, he does a ground-and-pound where he uses his fists like hammers instead of fists, he does a bunch of stomping attacks, he swings folks around like crazy trying to break them, and he keeps shooting beams out of his mouth
They took someone who had almost literally no style in his old appearances and gave him somethign that's unique, visually interesting, and thematically consistent. It's nice!

Kale is an iron rich green vegetable though, just like broccoli.

Also I'm so happy to see people have these horrific, blood-letting, deeply personal arguments about who would win in a fight between Broly and Jiren
It's like stepping through a time portal back to the year 2001 and re-reading all those same arguments, except back then it was Broly and Super Perfect Cell

Also Freeza playing nice was WONDERFUL

I am definitely going to buy this

Funniest part was when Frieza got his ass beat for an hour while Goku and Vegeta practiced fusion. Seeing that well deserved karma was hilarious.
"No, I can't be TEN centimeters taller, it has to look natural! I want people to think I'm still growing!"
Close second was Frieza selling Paragus's death. Really most of Frieza was hilarious.

Or the fact that 17 won the whole thing.
first screen of Jiren in DBZF, probably from a dramatic finish
The final big bad from super
Just gives them an excuse to put in a second Broly

but I kinda hope Jiren just doesn't have a block animation, nosells every blocked hit
Super armor on like all his base attacks
yeah I agree Kale should be in the game

I still wish Jiren had a better design. Like the "Grays' thing he's got going on is neat and unique for Dragon Ball but it doesn't feel all there.
They are cowards, and didn't make his eyes all black.
You know, Toriyama's shifting design sensibilities have been an interesting thing to watch
He seems to put the most care into the movie designs, though; Broly genuinely looks much better now than he did 20 years ago
