Earworms

Ever have a song stuck in your head? Maybe it's a song you like -- maybe you hate it. Maybe you love to hate it?

I seem to have one every day. In fact, every day when I wake, I'm humming something all morning long. The possibilities are across all genres: kids music, vidya game music, classical, country. Whatever. I've been wanting to make this thread for a while but never got around to it because usually my mornings are so packed, by the time I have a free moment the music has stopped.

But this morning, I have a moment and it's still going through my head so I'll start with this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqzBv3FYpr0

My daughter recently finished Undertale and we've been talking about it a lot, so as a result all the songs have been going through my head again.

Do you have an earworm today? What is it? Is there a story behind why it's stuck in your head? Do you love it? Do you hate it? Share your earworms!

My kid is also responsible for mine...

Colors weave into a spire of flame
Distant sparks call to a past still unnamed
Bear this torch against the cold of the night
Search your soul and reawaken the undying light-

(Thanks Niko for requesting to hear this nearly every day for the past two months)

Luckily there are a couple of cover artists who cover a ton of game/anime openings whose music is available on Apple Music, so I don’t have to resort to pulling up YouTube to hear it.

I was watching a bit of a DMC5 LP last night, of course split into smaller videos so I heard the intro music five or six times. Every quiet moment is filled with Bang Bang Bang pull my devil trigger

Heh, yeah, my kids are definitely responsible for like 80% of my earworms. For a while there is was the entirety of the Frozen soundtrack...

What's that from anyway? (Looks like anime to me. Are you seriously subjecting your kids to anime?!?)

They get Pokémon and Dinosaur King, if those count!

No, it’s the theme from Super Smash Bros Ultimate. I specifically have this cover version on my phone:

I've had the chorus of This Old Heart of Mine by the Isley Brothers stuck in my head all morning.

All in all I consider this a pretty good thing.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_9M6kRfJes

Also, does anyone else get whole albums stuck in their head? Like, you'll have a song in your head, and then once it's played through, the next song in its album gets stuck in there, and so on. Happens to me all the time.

Usually if my brain is playing classical music I'll hear the entire piece and not just one movement.

Not usually with other genres. And in fact with the kids music it often just one line. Again and AGAIN AND AGAIN.

Edit: ahhh fuck perrsun, now you got that going through my head and I didn't even click on the video. Noooooo I was enjoying Bonetrousle.

This song taunted me for over a year - I heard it in a cafe in Italy, but couldn't remember enough of the words to google it. Every now and then I would hear it elsewhere, like in the background of a hockey game I was watching on TV. I checked multiple playlists of in-house music for Toronto Maple Leafs games, but none of them included the song that had been torturing me for months.

Eventually I pulled up several Spotify lists of top tracks of the past couple years and quickly skimmed through any that weren't already familiar until I found it.

who would have thought a French remix of an Australian funk song would be so hard to track down?

One time at a wedding reception I let slip to my 9-year-old cousin that I've never actually heard this song.

She then proceeded to sing for me the entire song word-for-word.

I'm not sure if they were, like, the standard lyrics or anything, but the version she sang was hilariously violent towards the end. That combined with how happy she looked singing it, I couldn't stop laughing for like five minutes.

I'm so glad no one has posted a song that could actually get stuck in my head.
I haven't listened to a lot of music lately, so only really old songs I memorized back in the day and no one plays anymore ever play in my head.

If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing

I'm making it a point to click on everyone's earworms.

Holy shit, maybe this wasn't a good idea. (but at least I have no current earworm of my own...)

and @Fearghaill , I've been wondering about that song for years too!

Undertale and Deltarune have an obscenely high number of earworms because Toby Fox is v good at the musics. Lately the one that gets stuck in my head is Field of Hopes and Dreams.

I had a friend back in high school who told me the best way to get rid of a song in your head was by singing Puff the Magic Dragon to yourself.

"It's impossible to get Puff the Magic Dragon stuck in your head," he'd say. "It's like a palate cleanser for the brain."

Unfortunately, I did not find this to be true.
