Doesn’t necessarily mean much, but given how the phases tend to act as TV seasons, I’m curious to see how/if they maintain that structure with this lineup
I imagine there was a exec meeting at Disney where a senior exec guy was like, ‘I dunno, a lot of these pitches seem too weird’ and then a junior exec said ‘actually sir, if you’ll look at this graph whose axes are ‘weird’ and ‘profit’ you’ll see that this has historically been a good strategy’
And the senior guy was like, then fuck it lets get weird
it was the smallest on the list but
Pluto was a planet and I'll never forget
It's not like Hickman is coming out of nowhere here. He proved on Secret Warriors and Fantastic Four that he could sell books and pull off rewarding long term planning before he did Avengers and proved it again.

I think that Editorial playing favorites can be kind of shitty and Cebulski's recent comments only exacerbate things
But A) high profile creators getting more leeway to buck the Monthly Comics Machine structure is something that has happened for like 30 years now, hell it is happening with Bendis over at DC right now and it isn't Hickman's fault. Dude wants to tell his X-Men story and if Editorial is willing to give him his fuckin blanket guarantee and free reign to oversee creative teams and books (as he says that all the creative teams are hand picked by himself) then fuckin more power to him
I'm Power Man: The Man Who Is Invincible Against High Powered Weaponry Who Chooses To Never Eat Pussy Despite Recieving A Lot Of Oral, Stop Giving Me a Hard Time About It
He absolutely is some sort of superhero. Even Marvel antiheroes are some sort of superhero. the punisher didnt just wake up some morning and like, shoot up a mcdonalds ala Falling Down. he put a big dumb skull on his chest and shot at spider man. Classic super hero shit
I'm Power Man: The Man Who Is Invincible Against High Powered Weaponry Who Chooses To Never Eat Pussy Despite Recieving A Lot Of Oral, Stop Giving Me a Hard Time About It
Is peter supposed to be evoking Miles in the latest issue? That black and red chapter even has a big of shock attack
Life Story is crazy and way darker than I was expecting but I am really enjoying it
I don't think that is intentional as I am getting the final issue (as it is the 2010s) will have
Miles and Kamala and the current generation of heroes debut and end the decades long Civil War with Peter either dying or just passing the mantle to Miles
And the full cast is:
Angelina Jolie - Thena
Richard Madden - Ikaris
Kumail Nanjiani - Kingo
Lauren Ridloff - Makkari
Brian Tyree Henry - Phastos
Salma Hayek - Ajak
Lia McHugh - Sprite
Don Lee - Gilgamesh

I agree with you, but I also think Colin's point also still stands. You have to take a risk with someone at some point, and Marvel has consistently not really done that with their POC and/or LGBTQ+ writers. The most recent Generation X was canceled not long after the first tpb came out, and was fucked around with the publishing schedule for the first four months, causing confusion about when it would come out. Sina Grace's Iceman was canceled despite good tpb sales, and from recent revelations from Sina Grace, fought him pretty much every step of the way. Yet Marc Guggenheim was allowed to meander for a year and a half with sub-par storytelling and no real reigns put on him as far as I can tell.
Considering it seems like you can smack Uncanny X-Men on anything and it will still sell decently, I think it would be really nice to give writers more of a chance to run wild for a year and half or so, let them build what they want with the franchise and see what happens. And if it works, let them keep going?
Like I'm really excited for Hickman's run, I'm gonna pick it up next week, but I also understand where people are coming with the critiques of who gets to run wild with the books.
The only point I would really argue with is that "Uncanny X-Men" is enough to sell books nowadays as the book has been hovering between 25-50 on the sales charts for a few months now and the whole reason for the Hickman relaunch is because interest in the brand has gotten super stagnant for several years. The last time I remember the X-Men line being, like, healthy across the board and something folks were legit excited for was post Schism and that was...almost 10 years ago
But that is ultimately a minor point, as I agree that Editorial consistently gives big name white dude writers more freedom than anyone else and that sucks
I appreciate that Hickman is trying to be more inclusive with the creative teams, at least. Out of the 6 books they have announced 2 are from Bryan Hill and Tini Howard and Vita Ayala and Leah Williams are confirmed to be leading the second wave of books with Williams saying it will be her first ongoing series
But it is still shitty that they don't get that opportunity on their own, they had to be picked by Hickman and Editorial has routinely proven they don't give the same opportunities to all talents

I'm having a weird time with the Marvel stuff from this afternoon, because...a lot of this sounds really cool! Mahershala Ali is great casting for Blade, the projects they've announced are weirder than anticipated, it's rad they're doing Jane Foster as Thor...but like...I'm increasingly uncomfortable with Disney's place in pop culture, and now that the big announcement show is over for the day...you know, some of the wider realities of this are sinking back in?
Like, they dropped all this stuff the same weekend a remake of the Lion King takes the number one spot at the box office away from the...seventh live-action Spider-Man movie, which took the top spot from the fourth Toy Story movie, and it'll probably be at number one for a few weeks and...I dunno, I guess my stance on the new Lion King movie and the new Spider-Man franchise are pretty clear at this point, but I'm real uneasy with Disney getting more chances to redefine franchises for the public. Like...the Fantastic Four movies weren't good, so, you know, whatever, they can have a go at them. But the X-Men movies were weird and goofy and they didn't always work, and the Wesley Snipes Blade movies were also their own weird thing, and...you know, Disney doesn't really have any reason to keep those movies alive, you know? They aren't going to make hundreds of millions of dollars off of Blade 2, so there's no reason to throw those up on Disney+ or angle for a way to get a special edition on blu-ray, or whatever, they'll send those down the memory hole, and their PG-13 Blade movie will get a dark ride at Epcot, or whatever.
And I know that seems extremely cynical and pessimistic, but...fuck, they shit out a new Lion King movie without a goddamned soul and it made eighty million dollars in a day! And I know that's a different division of the company, and I know I'm in the minority on the new Spider-Man stuff, and maybe the new Blade movie will be great! Mahershala Ali rules, and I've liked a bunch of recent MCU movies a whole lot! But I don't...think this uneasiness is unfounded given the...everything else about modern Disney and...you know, everything going on in this country
My advice is to embrace the cyberpunk future and start worshiping megacorporations as gods.

Just had a thought— whatever’s going on with Strange 2 could be how Loki gets to the main universe
Like Loki’s on some adventure in the first or last episode of his show and suddenly a portal opens and Strange is midbattle with his villain, throwing each other threw various universes and Loki follows them to escape whatever he’s got himself into

I have to wonder if this post inspired Jason Aaron's Avengers run.
It's one of my favorite superhero stories in any medium. I can't wait to see what they do for the sequel.

Dude LOVES being a pirate
its still fucking goofy as shit. how many superheroes that have names that act as a preface
hey ya'll its me.
am i a vampire? yes
am i undead? no.
i am a living vampire, we are valid,
Its Nightcrawler focused, entirely standalone, has a good cast and art and is a ton of fun
he's not a superhero, is the thing
his name is more similar to Kraven the Hunter or Kang the Conquerer
Is this a Mike Colter thing?
Like 75% of his history is either being an uneasy ally to Spidey or part of the Midnight Sons or some shit
Because this shit is wild

Kind of sad how the series ends immediately after that arc, would have been nice to see where it goes after that
