It also means that your sales several months down the line are going to be from blind luck through the store, and advertising on other websites/services.

Steam curation might be shit. But using the search tools, I have gotten people talking in the G&T steam thread about weird things they did not know about.

Steam is a thing I really don't like using very much but like the only competitor of note is Itch.io and that's entirely because you can tip the devs and pay for free stuff with their interface, which is a nice way to support people making weird things.

    We're all in this together

I've never had a problem finding a game on Steam ....

now DLC for said game is another story

it's easy to find games if you know what you're looking for, but so much shit is on steam that if you're a small developer with little to no marketing budget it's really hard to even get the title of your game out there, let alone convince people to check the game out

    ahh

how would you combat that? It seems like you'd have to basically sell direct which would have its own problems

Lots of self promotion, one of the few good uses for social media

yeah, but you'd have to know about it beforehand to follow it

alternately, game devs can self promote right now along with selling on steam or epic store or GoG or wherever

Solving the problem completely is really hard, but steam also doesn't do much to help

Tons of titles are added to steam every day, and a significant portion of them are asset flips, "games" where someone downloaded and installed a hodgepodge of unity assets to cobble together something that technically runs and looks like a video game at first blush but is completely devoid of content. You can crank em out fast with 0 overhead so even if you only sell one copy it's a profit

It's very hard to distinguish legitimate indie games with no marketing budget from that kind of shit, or say, years-long passion projects from a game dev student uploading their homework for shits and giggles

Epic is "better" here just in the sense that it's more exclusive, but of course that's equally unhelpful to the tier of game we're talking about here
