I don't think it is quite as tight as the first one, but it was good
Halle Berry's character's dogs were a force of nature, holy fuck
On reflection that sequence is now my favorite action sequence of all time.

The new stuff is actually pretty good! Aladdin's courtship of Jasmine is fleshed out a lot more, and thankfully I was wrong about him being Fuckboy Aladdin, he's actually shy and nervous and they expand on the idea that his biggest fear is that she won't like him for who he is. The best dance numbers are also new. The idea that the freed genie becomes a human also make more sense to me than the "he's still a genie and magic I guess but I don't know try not to think about it" from the cartoon.
The bad new stuff is when it's throwaway. There's stuff about Jafar wanting a war with a neighbouring kingdom that never goes anywhere. It's Jasmine's mother's country! Oh no! Who cares about Jasmine's mother? No one! When the movie takes big swings, it's pretty good. When it makes small changes, they're awful.
Jasmine in this doesn't want adventure, she wants to be the Sultan. In the end, she gets made the Sultan, because she's smart and competent and super great. But you know, at the beginning of this movie she didn't know what currency was. The Sultan in this isn't comic relief, he seems broadly competent and even to be on the precipice of realising that Jafar is full of shit.
Jasmine in general is really good in this, both as a performance and a character. She feels like a much stronger and more well-rounded character in general, even if the "she's the Sultan!" stuff is goofy as hell. Her new song is awful, but she rips the hell out of it and nearly makes it work through sheer enthusiasm. She fucking showed up to work in this movie, I tell you what.
Jafar and Nasim Pedrad are both bad in different ways. Jafar is just a dull characterisation, he's generic smouldering evil without any charm or humour. Nasim Pedrad is just in the wrong movie, she delivers everything in a really mannered, fairy-tale style that doesn't fit what anyone else is doing. Thankfully she's not in it much.
Unfortunately they totally beef the ending. To give Jasmine more to do, they have her confront the captain of the guard (who's a goodie in this) after Jafar has been made Sultan and say "no way bro, he's not the Sultan!" and then he turns on Jafar. This raises the question of what the genie's magic actually did? Just change his clothes? Everyone should have thought Jafar was the Sultan. This change makes it look as though Jafar said "I'm the Sultan now" and changed his clothes and everyone just believed him.
They change Jafar's wish from "make me the most powerful genie" to "make me the most powerful being" which holy shit that doesn't work at all. It changes the ending from "Jafar is imprisoned by his hubris and inability to think things through" to "Jafar made a perfectly serviceable wish and I guess the genie just fucked him over."
Will Smith is actually pretty great in this, and his singing is fine when it's not being choked to death by the production. He's about five times better than Emma Watson was in beauty and the beast and she didn't catch nearly as much shit. Like everything, he's at his best when he's allowed to do his own thing and not mimic the original.
it's cute and fun. would recommend.

While it's still kind of a "DING I'M A DICKHEAD" point to say "what does it mean that he's now the Sultan?" in the original you don't really think about it (I never did) and in the new version his captain of the guard immediately says "no, you're not, get fucked", so it ends up looking like Jafar is comically bad at wishing. The new version also skips the Prince Ali reprise where he reveals Aladdin, which I guess maybe never happens in the movie?
The main reason the sequence fails is just that they don't have a wildly entertaining performer as Jafar. They have a quiet, dour guy doing evil glares.
like original animated movie will always be in my heart simply for being a kid and not knowing any better (and also being dope as hell)
it's real frustrating and it's hard to really articulate/talk about it as its so unquestionably ingrained in pop cultural consciousness
Don't they make a point that wishes need to be specific otherwise the genie might fuck with you? ("Make me a prince")
You're the sultan, but our doesn't mean people suddenly eager to follow you. "All powerful being? Genie's are kinda all powerful. "
Sure, but the genie cheating is boring and Jafar screwing himself over through his hubris is much more interesting.
But then he'd be trapped in a lamp, which would make the lamp stronger.
Jafar should have turned into a lamp and it should have shocked the fuck outta everyone.
"Readers who prefer tension and romance, Maledictions: The Offering, delivers... As serious YA fiction, I’ll give it five stars out of five. As a novel? Four and a half." - Liz Ellor
My new novel: Maledictions: The Offering. Now in Paperback!
11 years later, on June 11, 1993, Steven Spielberg released Jurassic Park. It broke all box office records, surpassing E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial to be the highest grossing movie of all-time.
Best justification for re-upping with HBO so far.
