Master of Orion and Master of Orion 2

Love, love, loved these games back in the day. What I want to know is what is a good modern game to play that has similar gameplay? It seems all of the newer games are too complicated to be fun. MoO and the sequel were just complicated enough to be fun but did not require tons of micromanagement.
Also, let's discuss how awesome both of these games were.

I found that all the newer games are too simple. MOO3, GalCiv II and Sword of the Stars all seemed to put the player in a rather secondary position, able to give the odd nudge here and there but not able to actually run the empire.
It's a shame, as I do love those games (and Master of Magic). I would have thought that somebody would have managed a decent remake by now, but everything seems to be "in progress" and seems like it will remains that way forever.

Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar, and its expansion, I found to be fantastic, Ive heard that the expansion cleans up a lot of the problems that Mojo mentioned above, its the only game i've found that comes even close to MoO and MoO2, and as far as im concerned MoO 3 doesn't exsist.

I saw Sword of the Stars while I was at work yesterday. It's what gave me the idea to make this thread. Is it worth playing at all?

Apparently the developers decided to release a demo which did not represent the game. Most people aren't willing to spend money after playing it however. So the full game may not be terrible.

The demo was godawful. I never got the game because of it.
Bright day
Seconded. I had imagined 3D space 4X game for long time, so playing demo crushed that little fantasy of mine quite a bit. Though I found tactical combat the worst in demo.
OP: No there are not. GalCiv II is a good 4x space game, but it is its own game. Which is bad because MOO2 rocked and I still play it, as I do play MoM.

I even got an updated demo and it had the same problems. Clunkiest interface ever and ugly art.
Some of the ideas were... interesting. I liked the fleet interface and private colonization drives. Idea of various races requiring diferent enviroments was interesting, but the destruction of iconic landscapes made things mostly confusing for me.

I need to find copies of MoO and MoO2. I don't know what happened to mine and it doesn't seem like I'm going to find anything newer to replace their glory.
Sword of the Stars is horrible and it's developers are horrible and they should feel horrible for making a horrible game. It's the only game I have played that has given me a headache just from moving around the camera and navigating the interface.
Get Galactic Civlizations, the first one, or get the second one with it's expansion. If you want a realy hard time though get Star Wars: Rebellion I think it's called. It's a real time MoO2 only a lot more difficult, it also has multiplayer.

MoO2's ship building system was the best thing ever

I could never find out where that ship builder thingy was, which was probably why I kept losing battles. Just matter much though because I hate ship building in games. Even in Kingdom Hearts I just flew around as a little block with guns attatched to it.

If you want -more- detail, the Space Empires series is what you want. It gets almost obsessive about it at times. (just be warned V has an oddball interface).
In IV I was fighting another player via PBW. I was just cleaning his clock when he realized that my supply ships were A. hanging back and B. unarmored. So he changed his ship's strategies, they bypassed by fleet, blew away my supply ships, then harassed my fleet until it ran out of supplies and was easy picking. (out of supply ships move only slowly and can't shoot)

The ship design button was in the production queue menu in your colonies, I think. I loved designing my own fleet of ships, especially once you can start building titans and such. And getting captured antaran tech without cheating is so satisfying

Yeah once I got to the point where I could capture the bastards instead of evacuating, it was like christmas. And hitting Orion of course.
I loved the anti-piracy in the first game that would make you name a ship that you had to look up in the manual.
Reminds me of the old games like Hunt for Red October, F19, and Railroad Tycoon.

This is such a disappointing thread. I was hoping someone was going to chime in and be like "Oh yeah, get blah, blah blah...if you loved MoO and MoO2, you'll love it!"
My brother and I used to pick a race, difficulty, and size in MoO and then save it right away. One of us would play through first, then the other. It's amazing how much the game would change from the first time you loaded it on. Sure if the first dude was successful you'd know immediately where the good planets were, or sometimes on the higher difficulty one of us would lose in turns while the other gets random tech gifts and other boons. I love MoO, and I love the irrational way the computer conducts diplomacy. Keeping people friendly in that game is a matter left up to fate, as they'll turn on you for no god damned reason.
MoO 2 is great as well, with its multiplayer, leaders, and even more pimptastic ship design. I like the new races and a new victory method is always appreciated. Something about how it plays though has me returning to it less than MoO; I only ever feel the need to go multiplayer when I can convince 2+ people to slum it up with me.
I've tried all the other supposed 4x games in the past ten years, none of them come close to MoO.
In short, I would kill for a multiplayer version of MoO, and I am not a violent man. No graphical or sound improvements necessary. If it just popped up on PSN or XBLA I'd go out and buy one this second. MoO 2 I still have on every computer in this house (I got four copies of the game for $.99 cents awhile back, dest deal ever) but I would start playing it religiously if they had a DS port with online. Someone who knows someone, get to it.

So sad...
There aren't many 4X games.

If you want to play Master of Orion 2 multiplayer, I think DOSBox is the recommended way. The Windows version isn't very stable in XP, but the autosaves makes sure that's not a huge problem.

Damn. Someone here has had to have played it.

I will hold no hope for this game if it is true.

I got MoO running using Dosbox at one point but that was a while ago.
No kidding, the only thing I had trouble with was setting up the multiplayer. Its MoO that is hard to get working on the old XP.
What did you do to get it up? Sans multiplayer that is.
I got the multiplayer working too after installing the proper IPX protocols. Let's go to my other computer and check the settings. I'll be right back.
MOO2-Compatability mode, start with nothing checked, try running the game.
MOO-Compatability mode, win 95, then you need to go under the memory options, click uses HMA. Should work.
I think Im one of the few people that did not like Galactic Civ II. I enjoy having my systems to be connected by dotted lines.
Xpand, Xterminate, Xtremeitude, eXplore.
One of those may not be quite right...
They always use those but it really just means "turn-based space empire strategy game."
