I feel like I read you can change party leader for fights but I cant figure out how to do it. Everything where I'm at is weak to ice and Tifa has my ice materia, so I would like to just be piloting her from the word go here.

You have to go into the menu and change the leader on the stats page I believe.
That'll start the fights with you controlling whoever you picked.
yeah I do wonder what percentage of the matchmaking of what "team" people are on completely sidestep Cloud and are really just people voting "well but who do I wanna date"
Well it looks like 72% want to date Jessie or no one in that case

I'm still learning, but it helped to get comfortable with the flow of one character first, building/using ATB, then weaving in party ATBs, and finally trying to actively switch from 1 character, build/use some ATB, switch to the next, rinse and repeat
I'm starting to hit the point where you want to store ATBs on bosses though, since the available window to actually do meaningful damage seems to get smaller the longer into the game you get
Ya from what it looks like for bosses and other strong enemies you wanna hit them with whatever skill/element puts them in a pressure state and then use abilities that increase stagger by a bunch. Once they're staggered you unload everything you have onto them.
Tifa seems pretty good at putting enemies into stagger with how fast she attacks and some of her abilities build up extra stagger bar.
Mostly it's the AI for the other party members that bugs me
They seem pretty useless when you're not actively controlling them
I tend to switch over when I know I need to fill a meter. Also, you can use R2 and L2 to use their actions without having to switch over completely.
I didn't particularly enjoy the combat in the demo, but I'm liking it a lot more the deeper into the game I get. Maybe I'm getting more interesting options now?
I like that it's different enough from what the original game did that if I want to hop back in and play the original, I won't be too weirded out by it
I like that it's different enough from what the original game did that if I want to hop back in and play the original, I won't be too weirded out by it
So far, there are some minor annoyances with the combat system, but not too bad:
Passive ATB generation is too low relative to active ATB generation for the amount of situations you can wind up too low to want to charge into a fight, or a boss is too invincible to make bashing it for ATB feasible.
Ice and Wind having like, zero tracking while being the weakness of the enemy types that move around the most is a major annoyance.
Trash encounters feel really, really weak, to the point that it's an annoyance filling out staggers or chain-two-moves-together things for battle info sidequests or weapon ability maxing.
Attacks feel really, really wide and imprecise, which is great for trash mobs, but not great when you can't hit an enemy's weak point because it's just above head height or you keep pinging against the armored section when trying to hit a weak point.
Making most attacks difficult/impossible to avoid and better to block makes it feel more like a JRPG than an action game, but also makes the action game parts feel kind of vestigial. You can see where the action game segments actually kind of work well whenever you have a solo boss fight as Cloud. The chapter in which you first get Aerith in your party shows this off pretty amazingly; there's a boss you fight as just Cloud at the beginning where it's very, very obviously designed as an action game dodge/block and punish encounter, and another very similar boss you fight later with Cloud and Aerith where half of the attacks are near undodgeable and put one of your characters into a locked state because, well, you've got another character, you're just supposed to swap and keep the damage going.
The groundwork of building up Biggs, Wedge and Jessie really paid off here! This sucks! Also spending time talking and helping out in Sector 7 really makes this feel like a monumental event in a way that was kind of lost in the original.
Also: the ghost things hovering around Biggs and Jessie when they're on their way out: suspicious!
Other stuff: letting you play as Aeris as she runs off to rescue Marlene is a great move. Just seeing all of these people running away, some of whom you know already, is real powerful. And Wedge gets a hero moment leading the evacuation! And maybe he gets to live! I haven't finished the chapter yet, he might still die!
ALSO ALSO ALSO
When Aeris hugs Marlene, the same little filter and sound effect that plays when Cloud has a flashback hits, and when Marlene stares at Aeris, Aeris shushes her??? What's this all about?!?! Also Aeris seems like she knows a lot more than she should, and maybe so does her mom? It's wild how they're still pulling fast ones on me in this, especially given how many times I've played through that opening Midgar segment.
Game's rad. I can't believe some of these moments are actually working on me.

I'm surprised by my vote, but I feel like it's justified in the remake (Aerith sucked in the original, sorry not sorry)
as of ch 9
Tifa seems way more like a friend to Cloud, and while Jessie is amazing, Cloud himself doesn't seem all that into her. Like he's warmed up to her, but not being actually into her sort of warmed up.
But Cloud and Aerith genuinely seem to have some chemistry. She gets him to open up a bit, and he stops worrying just about getting money for jobs with her. And then like at her house he thinks about his mom talking to him about finding a nice girl and actually seems drawn to the idea of having a normal life, and when he sees her all dressed up there's literally fireworks in the air and he's all tongue-tied for a bit. Which is not a reaction he gets to seeing Tifa
Also Aerith's method of just bullying Cloud into doing stuff through unrelenting sweetness is pretty effective and also hilarious.
They're pretty cute together!

I will say your character instantly drawing aggro when you switch to them is very annoying in Aerith's case.
bit, and the whole thing itself, could have come from that era.
My only wish for this game would be a basic behaviour page for your party. Like some simple "focus on this in combat" type stuff, that a game like this really should have / often does have.

Queueing up a long animation ability and then going to town with another character builds up ATB fast. Also putting the ATB block materia on your allies since they actually block. A lot.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
Some thoughts, so spoilers for whole game (SERIOUS spoilers, yall)
Early on this was going for the game of the year category. I really liked most of the additions and sidequest stuff.
I was wary about the spirit guys from the start, but hoped they would become a good addition.
The part where you first meet Aerith was really good and I love the Turks.
In general the combat system is really great and the bossfights are really fun.
The main plot and main dungeons started to drag a bit after the walled market. They Just became a cavalcade of endless dungeons that took way too long to cross.
There started to be too many 'this is bullshit' spirit moments in the cutscenes too. Why should I care about any of this shit, if the retcon-spirits are gonna retcon it anyway?
'Barret got stabbed?' Spirit of RETCON to rescue. NPC:s interfering in classic storyline? RETCON. etc etc.
The Whole final sequence after the bike part was pure unearned Dragonball BS. I get it was dream sequence, but I couldn't care less about it. I was just happy that it was over.
Even though I got a bit negative about the end, I still consider it a good game. Just not a game of the year material.
8/10.
For sequel, I hope they drop the spirits of retcon and just do whatever. As long as there's good amount of new material and sidequests.
Also drop the game length down to 20 hours by shortening the main questline.

Hmm...
If the spirits are undoing things that didn't happen in the original they aren't really retconning things.
A retcon is when you change an original storyline.
Hmm...so if those spirits are trying to keep the story as close to the original as possible they probably aren't working with Sephiroth then.
I'm not finished yet, just don't really care about spoilers and pondering.
Though I do wonder how the backend is gonna look compared to the frontend. I didn't feel like there was too much padding for the first 10 or so chapters but I think there are 18 altogether and 10 is the Wall Market so I'm wondering where all this other stuff is gonna come from. Cause Wall Market was pretty much a straight shot to Shinra headquarters.
it's weird that their fleshing out of the early parts of the game now means that FF7 just has actual characters named Biggs and Wedge instead of throwaway gags

True. Maybe I should call them Spoiler-ghosts, because they spoil all the fun

Another thing I'm hoping is that the 2nd part opens up a bit.
There are too many cramped spaces in this one and I'm guessing its 1. Cause Midgard is more or less the same 2. Hardware limitations.

I'm really surprised by how well they're handling Cloud, they're really threading the needle well on him
through Chapter 4, and some original game thoughts
his initial assholishness, the idea that it's all a front, and his gradual softening are all really well done, and I particularly love that they're using Jessie, Biggs, and Wedge as the vectors for how he starts to care
it's less that he buys in on the cause, though he does, but he realizes he likes them, though he wouldn't ever say that cause he's still gotta front as the tough guy

"Sorry about your ass" is one of the best lines of dialogue that has ever been in any Final Fantasy game.

There is just way too much to manage
I would try to keep mashing square as a habit/ATB builder and keep your mental focus on who/what you're going to whack once your meter is full

But I just kinda prefer turn based RPGs over action RPGs anyways and what they did do to the combat is still fun to play.
Im considering doing this after i beat the Remake
