I haven’t bought board games in a year+ so I kind of forgot how busted my “former game store employee” discount was when it comes to gift shopping.

“Oh this board game is expensive! What’s my price? Oh yeah that’s nothing.”

    - when you reach ten "bags", that's minus 100 points

Also, you go from one card upwards. This helps people learn the game while the scoring is low and it's relatively easy to work out how many tricks you will take, and leaves the exciting, high value rounds for the thrilling conclusion

It's the hardest to work out how many tricks you will take at the lowest numbers! You have 2 cards. The Jack of Hearts and Diamonds. Spades are trumps. It's a 3 player game You are leading. How many tricks will you take??????!????

WHO KNOWS. FUCK THIS GAME. FUCK THIS GAME RIGHT IN THE HEAD.

Sorry. I think I just flashbacked there.

I have a thoughtful and infrequently updated blog about games http://whatithinkaboutwhenithinkaboutgames.wordpress.com/

I made a game, it has penguins in it. It's pay what you like on Gumroad.

What happens when you correctly get 0 tricks? which is fairly common for lower number of cards.

I think I'm out of luck. On their website, they claim that by law they cannot assist with any damage claims that were not specifically noted on the bill of lading.

Don't give up. If you've documented and taken pictures they still may be able to hold the shipping company liable. Or if they're good they will stand by their product and make sure it gets corrected.

I found this and used similar when I had an issue with my kitchen cabinets. The truck driver was definitely not interested in waiting around while I opened every box, so I opened any that had external obvious issues, but later found some dings and got a replacement cabinet shipped.
    "Concealed Loss or Damage

Concealed loss or damage is that which was not apparent at the time of delivery. Concealed damage should be reported to the carrier usually within 15 days of delivery.

These claims are considered and investigated as concealed loss or damage claims and will be handled based on their individual merits.

The National Motor Freight Classification, ITEM 300135 (see specific section below) states: “When damage to contents of a shipping container is discovered by the recipient, which could not have been determined at time of delivery, it must be reported by the recipient to the delivering carrier upon discovery and a request for inspection by the carrier’s representative made. Notice of loss or damage and a request for inspection may be given by telephone or in person, but in either event must be confirmed in writing by mail."

Well this is a hell of a headline to stumble over during lunch:

Video Game Publisher Wants To Buy Board Game Giant Asmodee For Over $3 Billion [Kotaku]

Publisher in question is Embracer Group, which per the article consists of "a collection of companies like Gearbox, THQ Nordic and Deep Silver"

I think the thing that stands out to me about the report is that Asmodee is big, and Embracer (reportly) doesn't plan to change anything at Asmodee.

I keep trying to make sense of this, and all I can come up with is "Bigger company buys big company, gets bigger-er".

Yeah, the timing on this doesn't make any sense, unless they think they're worth much more than 3bil and can undervalue their purchase due to the pandemic struggles for board games right now. Figuring that once things bounce back they can potentially sell them off for more or gain the profit increase?

As a gamer, I'm already hesitant to buy Asmodee stuff at this point, because of all of their FFG stuff going on and customer service horror stories. Which is a shame.

Does Asmodee not have its own storefront/fulfillment organizations? The only reason the MM purchase makes sense to me is if Asmodee now feels like it needs to directly complete on the consumer market.

Which suuuuucks, because now we're down another good, large retailer and the remaining ones have to compete directly with Asmodee.

Ugh. What the fuck is up with today? Is it like Mergers & Acquisitions Day and noone told me?

The strangest thing about the Miniature Market story is that it’s not a recent development. There wasn’t even an announcement. There just happened to be a slide in the deck during the Embracer presentation with stuff they own and MM happened to be on there.

If you’re like me and bought from MM in 2021 there’s probably a 50/50 chance we bought from Asmodee.

I’m even old enough to remember when places like Fantasy Flight Games and Wizards of the Coast had their own stores. Or as they called them, “retail experiences.” I wonder if this will turn into the online equivalent of that? But instead of spinning up some off-the-shelf e-commerce site they decided to buy an established company, probably hoping they can milk their existing user base for a while.

Why build your own when you can buy someone else’s?

Yeah, their retail presence in Wisconsin is a tiny strip mall storefront, with just a couple short aisles of product and a single employee at the counter. But at the same time they just bought land to build a whole new shipping and receiving warehouse for their online business.

There's a more established rival board game store in the area with four big locations and a huge community presence, but who sells everything for MSRP or above, and I can never understand why anyone goes there when Boardlandia is so much cheaper, more helpful, more willing to try to hunt down obscure titles to order for you, and much more aware of what's new and hot (when I asked about Gloomhaven at it's retail release, the employees at the rival store told me they had never heard of it, while Boardlandia had multiple pallets of it in their warehouse available for sale).

That’s surprised me sometimes. Like the lgs I worked at is definitely bigger than probably most retail stores minus like mox boarding house - including the big online retailers that have a physical space as well

But their website is just the generic crystal commerce store with a wix template homepage and they just don’t care about trying to invade that online world.

Gnome Games? They are at MSRP, but they have a ton of in-store product and their people are super nice. Knowledgeable, social, they'll hold games for you or put you on a call list for certain products, and they're not creepy like the people at The Game Capital who I overheard talking about how you have to treat women like shit to reel them in. Gnome Games will often back Kickstarter products, too, though they charge higher for the exclusive content.

What's the go-to for nice cases to hold a card game collection these days? Specifically, Marvel Champions has outgrown the core box.

the artist case was still a hot item when i've looked for Arkham solutions in the past but also yeah, not giving money to hobby lobby and will actively recommend that people REDACTED things from Hobby Lobby. A lot of custom etsy strains/etched/custom versions seem to be using that case.

I'm in the BCW boxes myself though. It's just easy and big. I don't take this game with me anywhere anyway and I had extras from downsizing magic to just a shoebox full of stuff

My wife and I snagged Call to Adventure last week and have been playing it pretty much constantly.

It's kinda sorta a storytelling/building ish mashup. Players begin by choosing Origin, Motivation, and Destiny cards, then play proceeds with revealing cards from different Acts. These cards are typically Traits or Challenges that add to your Story and give you stat points and such. Challenges require rolling runes associated with your stats, and the stats are the D&D Big Six, which is cool!

After a player has collected 3 Challenges or Traits, the next Act is revealed on their next turn, and the game goes through Act 3, getting progressively more difficult: for instance, Act 1 might see your character defeating a childhood rival, becoming studious, and sharing their first love, while Act 3 has them facing down demons and armies of undead. It gets intense!

Once Act 3 is complete, players reveal their Destinies, and you score points based on triumphs, tragedies, and usually the goals on your Destiny. Highest score wins, but I never feel bad losing because I've usually told a pretty good story in play.

There are optional rules for Co-op and solo play, as well as two expansions (one of which is Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archives!) with a third in Kickstart.

Has anyone else played this game or looked into it? I'm obsessed. I love it. I'm definitely collecting the expansions and mats/sleeves/etc.

Irish Gauge is a nice train game because it's a lot less imposing than a lot of the genre. That the art is also quite nice is a real cherry on top. I actually got to play Mini Express recently as well, and it's also very good in all its own ways.
Both games really appealed to me in that while they still use shares, they played with them differently than the other train games I've played, and it just made for a smooth, pleasant experience where you're done in about an hour.

I wish they would sell the box art for the Iron Rails games as posters. I don't have much inclination to own all the games, but geez they're insanely well executed box arts ...

My friend and I exclusively play with the Kingkiller expansion. My only problem with the game are the Antihero cards that screw with other players' challenges; hitting those runes can be hard enough without active sabotage.

Also, this game is a great companion to Roll Player. One game determines your stats, the other flashes out your backstory.

It was a miss for me but I think it's pretty group-dependent. Got to lean in to the storytelling angle for it to really be enjoyable.
