I had multiple CYOA Mario books.

I remember one of them had you find Boom Boom’s sock rather randomly, or else you died.

the first YA/non "kids" book I can remember reading was a novelization of Mega Man 2, of all things

after that I started reading my mom's old Stephen King novels and whatever sci-fi books had cool covers at the library

"It" is not a thing an 11-year-old should be reading!

When I was a kid I read Animorphs for myself. Animorphs? Completely cool.

Once I'd had some fantasy under my belt, my dad got me to read Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time—the first fuckin' chunk of 'em, anyway. For him, those books were the modern fantasy books, nothign else coudl touch them, and he was so taken with the One Power as a fantasy concept that, when I started coming up with my own stories and sharing my ideas about how magic might work, he'd criticize them for getting too far away from the philosophical underpinning that informed the One Power

my very dumb opinion when i was a dumb teenager was that light fun books were dumb because movies and comics and video games did that kind of thing better and if i was gonna read a book i wanted it to be a Serious, High-Minded Exercise

Did anyone else read The Seventh Tower? Series by Garth Nix about a spoiled brat who lives in a massive castle with a bunch of other spoiled rich people who all have magic sunstones that use the different color spectrums of light to cast magic and give their shadows to otherworldly creatures they contract while also about a girl who is part of a bunch of Inuit Vikings that live their lives constantly chasing the migration of mammoth-sized walruses as they use colossal boats rigged to move on top of ice while passing down warnings about living shadows and light?

Was a pretty damn good MG/YA series!

Brandon Sanderson was brought in to finish it and he went at every loose thread with intent to tie it up or cut it entirely, just taking a machete to all the cruft.

A two part book series that was buried into the recesses of my mind until Jay Edidin brought them up in his podcast like a month ago was The Blue Sword and The Hero and the Crown, by Robin McKinley. Both of them are very good fantasy books focused on young women, and in my memory are rad as hell.

oh I also used to read those

nuclear post-apocalypse mutant and commie fightin' ultra macho jerk-off fantasies

they had a lot of sex scenes. I remember one basically like "her boobs were huge, really big, so big, but they're not saggy at all, because of a mutation."

you know a thing I love? it's like, Sean Bean, always dies of course. It was happenstance for a while but now I'm pretty sure people specifically cast Sean Bean as characters that die.

He was in Silent Hill and was the only main character that didn't die. he died in the sequel, tho, I think.

I remember watching Game of Thrones for the first time and it was with friends and I almost made a joke about how Sean Bean can’t possibly die since he’s the main character and then whelp

The first thing I ever saw Sean Bean in was the Sharpe series so my mind was always skewed since he survives that.

    Also Ronin he doesn’t die.

He does the intro voice over for Life is Feudal, I don't think he dies in that. (I cannot believe they snagged Sean Bean for it. I hope he really likes the game or something. I get a real pleasure out of imagining him painstakingly flattening land and making a little farm.)

oh! Kit Harington? Jon Snow. He was in Silent Hill 2 with Sean Bean, bringing it all back around. Silent Hill takes place in Westeros

the movie Silent Hill 2 was some bullshit because the story was a mangled version of Silent Hill 3, and Silent Hill 2 the game has a plot that would transfer wonderfully to the silver screen.

It's amazing how terrible Hollywood is at transferring game narratives into movies. Silent Hill 2 is a deep psychological study of the hell we create in our own minds. It's literally people being haunted by their own demons. Pyramid Head is clearly intended to be a metaphor for James' id, specifically the aggressive psychosexual pathology and his guilt over the circumstances surrounding his wife's death.

The movies treat him like he's Jason Voorhees.

Hitman is a dark comedy where you plot out the Rube Goldberg deaths of powerful people creating a geopolitical web of conspiracies and espionage. It tells half the narrative through mission briefings and cutscenes and the other half through overheard dialogue and environmental clues observant players can make thoughtful use of in their assassination attempts. Hitman's one of the few franchises left where a high score means something and the best way to get the highest score is to kill your targets in a way that would leave people questioning whether they were even murdered or died in some darkly ironic accident. If there were a series of films to compare it to it would be James Bond as filtered through all of The Cohen Brothers films at once.

The movie is about a bald man who shoots people real good.

Yeah Anne MacCaffrey put a lot of thought into her mind-linked simultaneous telepathic dragon/dragon human/human sex scenes
