The [itch.io Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality] has a lot of games in it

Itch.io's featured bundle is currently the Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality. Like Humble Bundle, itch.io often sells bundles where you can pay what you like, with a minimum of $X to get certain, featured games. For this bundle the minimum amount is $5 for all of the games in the bundle. There are currently 1,658 1,659 1,705 games in the bundle.

That's a lot of games. Like, for real.

I guess I made this thread so that those of us who have taken the plunge can help each other separate the wheat from the chaff, and there is a lot chaff to be honest, but also a bunch of games I've wanted to try out but not quite enough to actually shell out money for them individually.

Here are some of the ones that have caught my eye so far:
  • Quadrilateral Cowboy
  • Oxenfree
  • Octodad
  • Catlateral Damage
  • Airships: Conquer the skies
  • Celeste
  • Tonight We Riot
  • Overland
  • Nuclear Throne

These are just the ones I've actually heard of. There are also a many many more that I've never heard of but look like they might be a fun way to kill a couple of hours, like Mewnbase in which you colonize the moon with a team of astronaut space cats, Satellite Repairman in which you fix satellites in the middle of an interstellar war, or Throw Cubes into Brick Towers to Collapse Them which I think speaks for itself.

So... any hidden gems in there that I'm missing out on?

Spring Falls is lovely but I am having a hard time internalising the rules so I'm struggling now I am on level 49

I have a thoughtful and infrequently updated blog about games http://whatithinkaboutwhenithinkaboutgames.wordpress.com/

I made a game, it has penguins in it. It's pay what you like on Gumroad.

There's some tabletop games in there - One of them i can recommend is Costume Fairy Adventures.

I've actually got a recruitment thread over in critical role - i highly recommend people who've grabbed the bundle come sign up if they're keen on some lighthearted spritley shenanigans.

Also, Tower is really fun. I suggest messing around with the gravity, you can get some really interesting results.

Plant Daddy reminded me of Viridi crossed with an idle game, which it pretty much is. I recommended the bundle to a friend, and we both chose that as our first game to check out and we were not disappointed.

The game also lets you share 'seeds' for the plants you grow, so here are a couple:
    A 3 star ancient fern:
    091 9239

    A 5 star mushroom:
    080 6607

Don't try to grow the mushroom until you have the mushroom plant unlocked in the store.

Bleed and Bleed 2 are excellent twin-stick shooter-y, acrobatic platform-y action games with pixel art graphics starring an adorable pink-haired female protagonist who just wants to become the world's greatest hero. Great fun, such that despite already having them on Steam, I also picked them up for the Switch when they were on sale recently - ideal for a few minutes of on-the-go blasting. Highly recommended if you like that sort of thing, and quite honestly, maybe even if you usually don't. They're pretty great.

Troika! is pretty cool. Like if you were in a fever dream and were trippin on mushrooms and smoked a pound of good weed and had some real weird techno/ambient music playing softly.

It's real fuckin weird, is what I'm saying :rotate:

Also, not a TTRPG, but Helium Rain has been on my wishlist for awhile so I'll probably check it out tonight when I get off work. It's a space sim with some similarities to the X series of games I believe. Real neat, minimal art style too

Your Future Self is interesting so far, its one of those games I can't really describe beyond what's on the store page without spoiling anything. Other than to say that the flickery CRT effect is very atmospheric, but I wish it didn't make me feel like I'm about to have a seizure any minute. You can turn the effect off but then I feel like you'd be missing half of the atmosphere. I don't know how many endings there are, but I've just found one, and I'm going back in for more.

I'll vouch for Catlateral Damage. If you're looking for a fun, simple game where all you do is play a cat that likes to jump onto things, into things, or over things, all for the glorious kitteh purpose of knocking things onto the floor because of a grievous slight against you (your food was a minute late, the human came home smelling of dog, etc.).

But seriously, it's mindless, wonderful fun and good for kids and people of all ages!

This thread might be just what I'm looking for. I really like the look of Pleroma which looks to be some kind of exploring/narrative game, but there's no option to invert mouse so I can't get into it yet until I solve that problem. I actually already noticed there's a few FPS games there without invert so... yeah that screws me.

I'm also looking for games for my kid. I installed Disobedient Sheep and played for about two minutes. Seemed fun and v. simple. I'm lacking a gamepad though, I meant to buy one last time I was out of the country but forgot, so that might make things difficult until the end of the year.

It's true there's a lot of chaff here. When I bought the bundle last week it didn't have a search bar to find games, so paging through was a challenge. That search is a godsend. Some of the things here aren't finished games as much as 'here's what I thought was a neat project that I might try to kickstart later.'

Not complaining too much though, this is a wicked pack.

I don't know where he got the scorpions, or how he got them into my mattress.

Good idea to make a thread for this truly gargantuan bundle.

@Caedwyr has been doing a lot of work searching, curating and compiling gems so far.

Also @Orivon pointed out this gem, that I snagged to follow up on at some point:

Pyre being added to the bundle is certainly a big deal. The wizard basketball that makes up the game's tournaments isn't my favorite, and I always struggled a bit to play it. But the writing, characters, art and music are sublime and made it well worth a full playthrough. Some serious feels to boot. :)

There is approximately 1000+ weird things in there. The number of 'standard' games is going to be fairly low. This is Itch.io

    Thanks for the flag Iolo.

I will try to update tgis based on people's recommendations, but here is the list for now.

Since the Itch.io list of games is so lengthy, and is likely to continue to grow based on all the people asking to add their work to the bundle on the itch.io forums, I figure it would be helpful for people to have a list of the games/content that stands out to them. Here is the list that I've started and if you have a recommendation for another game you think others would enjoy that is in the bundle, please @ me and I'll add it to the list.

The criteria I generally used was games that got fairly high user ratings on Steam with written reviews that provided detail on why they were good, ones that I'd heard good things about, or ones that had good reviews from other places. I mostly avoided the itch.io site reviews as I couldn't find anything below a 4.0 out of 5.0 no matter what it was, which made me suspect the review scale and most reviews were very terse and didn't provide much detail as to why they liked/disliked a game. The idea is to provide a more curated list based on recommendations of what people have enjoyed and not just everything I might be interested in no matter the jank.

I'll try to keep this updated. Full list behind the spoiler.

Okay, having finished Your Future Self I can now provide a proper, spoiler-free review:
    1. It is very short, no more than about 2 hours of content
    2. It is pretty linear, once you figure out what you're doing it is very easy to progress
    3. I don't think there are any alternate endings, but there is at least one "fake ending". You'll know its really over when you see the credits
    4. It made me feel feelings
    5. You should play this.

    Jimmy and The Pulsating Mass.

Its an RPG that wears its Earthbound inspiration on its sleeve and has no shortage of weird characters and oddball humor of its own with a dash of cartoon horror to go along with it.

The whole game takes place inside the mind of a young boy named Jimmy who goes on an adventure with his family to defeat the pulsating mass, a shape shifting creature that haunts the dream world and has the power to twist and warp places and people into monsters from their once cute or harmless looking appearances. I'm only 30 hours in myself (its a fifty hour game!) but find the game fascinating as it is fun. Jimmy lives a perfect life in a world with a family that loves him but from early on, you can see the cracks from the real world he tries to lock off, hinting at a darker reality or pain he's trying to escape from.

One of the main mechanics of the game is Jimmy's ability to empathize and transform into certain enemies he comes across and gain their forms and abilities with his "imagination". Jimmy starts powerless with no real skills of his own other than an attack command but through leveling up each new form, they gain specialized attacks that allow each transformation to fill in a certain niche in battle, such as the sunflower that heals, a vampire that functions as both a physical and magical attack, a slime that tanks, a bird that makes extremely loud noises for some reason that can't be interrupted or put to sleep, a bear thats a physical powerhouse, etc. These forms level up and can be used improve Jimmy's normal form stats (improved MP from raising sunflower, better def from slime) and also allow regular Jimmy to mix and match their form abilities to a greater degree than you can in other forms. Each Transformation has their own unique skills and spells but can take very little from the other forms other than one or two skills. With base Jimmy, he has much more options available making his default form very powerful and versatile as the game goes on.

These forms also have functionality outside of combat as they each have a unique action that allows them to discover secrets or solve puzzles or maybe just shake an NPC by the shoulders to get a funny response from them.

This game is criminally under looked on Steam as well. If you buy the bundle, please give it a shot. I was deeply bummed I hadn't heard of the game until a few months ago, it deserves more eyes on it.

Its a sad game, its a dark game, its a funny game and its also kind of beautiful in its own weird way.

1000% chance that dev played "Tech Romancer" back in the Dreamcast era.

Well, I beat it. It was much less of a dating simulator than I was hoping for. It's really just a visual novel. It is fairly straightforward as VNs go, with only a handful of choices. There are 7 total endings though.

Getting them all is fairly easy:
There are two sets of mechs, each with two endings (good and bad), and then 3 secret endings. I won't spoil anything specifically, but if anyone needs help finding the endings:
The choices you are given are always the same, but the two mechs are very different. To get the 'good' ending for each mech you need to choose the option that suits the mech's strengths in each training simulation. To get the 'bad' ending, choose the opposite.

The 3 secret endings are a bit different and don't vary by mech. There is a super bad ending that you get by choosing the obviously bad choice for each decision, and then there is the path to the true ending:
Make sure to check your messages each morning. Notice anything weird? If you check you messages every morning, you will get an extra choice before the end of the game. This choice leads to two endings, depending on the choices made earlier:
You will most likely get a bad ending. To get the true ending you need to follow the mysterious instructions in the subject of each email. It may not be obvious what the instructions are telling you to do unless you try each of the options during training.

Oh, I also played Newfound Courage, which is a simple 2d adventure game about a boy who likes another boy and who also saves the world. I enjoyed it more than Mech_Romancer, despite it's flaws.

The biggest negative is that the script of the game needs a good look-over by an editor. There's a lot of awkward phrasing and some places where there are textual mistakes (like a word being left out, or what is clearly a wrong word that snuck through spell-check).

The good parts are that it has a sweet story in an interesting and surreal world. Parts of the 'lore' are fairly one-note, but it's interesting enough given that the game isn't terribly long. The game only has one ending and doesn't have a 'fail condition', but it does have collectable lore tidbits. If you play the game, don't stress about missing the lorebook chapters. None of them are missable and the game explicitly gives you a chance to look for them all before ending the game. If you are having trouble finding any, try this:
Only 9 of 10 can be 'found', and of that 9 there is one book that is just flat out hidden. In the zone that includes Nora's house, it is hidden behind a tree. I only found it by chance. All the others have some sort of clue to their location or an obvious puzzle to unlock them.
The 10th can only be unlocked after you have all of the previous 9. Once you have found all 9 and before you start the end sequence, make sure you talk to everyone once more.
There is also a Christmas themed dlc, but it doesn't really add anything to the story. While it was nice to get to see a bit more of all of the characters, it is essentially skippable.

A Short Hike is a pure laid back good time.

Like the cute and wholesome aesthetic of Animal Crossing with (very) light platforming elements but finished in an evening of play?

A Short Hike is game of the year material for me. It is a beautiful experience.

As I said on another thread I am intensely jealous of anyone who gets to play it for the first time.

I even 100%'d it and I never 100% games. I hate fishing mini games and I still stuck it out just so I could spend more time with the game.

Fateful Lore seems like a nice, simple NES Dragon Quest homage. Cute and charming too. Only for Android and iOS.

Found some more quirky, rules-light TTRPG books, and they're all about playing as plants. Each one is standalone, but all can be used together, and each one is about a different class. They are:
    Succulent Sorcerers
    Petal Paladins
    Bonsai Brawlers
    Mossy Mechanics

Have You Heard About the Beast seems like a fun, collaborative storytelling device, and could be used in conjunction with other TTRPGs to create, uh, beasts to go slay/meet/pet.

You Have One Ability... The Ability to Fuck This Up! is an RPG with one ability, and everyone fucks everything up. The name alone made me download it

That sounds cool. There was a game called Faselei! on the Neo Geo Pocket Color that used a system like that, effectively programming mechs. Really cool game, I wish I still had it.

I've tried a bunch of these, more hits than misses I think. Mainly following the lists floating around here, with a couple that I thought looked neat when I was going through the full thing.

Splinter Zone- Fun little platformer. The levels quickly started to repeat so I only did two playthroughs, but it was cool as a short experience.

Minit- Pretty great. The time thing was always a fun puzzle to see what I could do/where I could go based on which home base I set. I accidentally completed it without doing all the optional stuff the first time so I played through it again to get those. Another short-ish experience but it's very well done.

Verdant Skies- I need to spend more time in it but it seemed like a cool little harvest moon/stardew valley one-of-those games. Not big on the characters just yet, two are just ok and one is an awful person, but maybe more will show up or these will grow on me.

Whipped And Steamy Cosplay Cafe- It was alright. If you like risque content and humor you could do worse. The store management stuff is so easy and simple that it barely matters what you do, but since the point of the game is to interact with these characters and see their storylines through it's fine that the base gameplay doesn't hinder that goal. I dunno. I stopped playing after finishing the initial two weeks, didn't really care enough to try endless mode. Probably just wasn't for me but someone might get more fun from it.

Quadrilateral Cowboy- I liked this a lot, the puzzles were cool and the coding part was a fun layer to working out how to complete these levels. I stopped playing when it switched from coding to coordinating three different characters, I didn't enjoy that stuff at all, but that change was far enough in that I got a decent amount of time from it.

Mable & The Wood- Seemed cool, then about 20 minutes in it wanted me to manipulate the fiddly-ass movement to multi-jump across a layer of one hit kill lava and I said fuck this and uninstalled.

Myth Bearer- It's a neat concept, a rpg where everything you do is permanent. Kill that enemy it's gone forever, drink that potion you're not getting that one back. A nice puzzle to find out where you can go, what you can kill without taking too much damage yourself, what way to make your character level up. I played about half an hour then couldn't figure out where I was supposed to go next so just stopped playing.

Tonight We Riot- I suck at brawler/beat-em-ups so couldn't progress past the third area.

As We Know It- This was a fun little post-apocalypse VN. Some good characters, ones I really enjoyed spending time with, but then I got to the ending and it was miserable so I figured i'd try again with the same romance route but going the other story path and it was even worse. So I stopped playing. I looked up the dev's story guide/flow chart and I have no idea how you're supposed to reach these milestones to get the different endings. I spend every time possible with one character to get their affinity up but I end the game with three hearts out of five and I literally do not know where i'm supposed to optimize it more. It's frustrating, because the writing is good for most of it even if the daily tasks get repetitive, but then it's like it remembers that it's a post-apocalyptic story and demands that no happiness can exist.

Tessa's Ark Chapter 1- The dialogue was impenetrable and the puzzles were buggy and confusing. I stopped playing after 15 minutes.

Lenna's Inception- This is a really good game. It's basically a zelda homage/parody, with item-based progression through the overworld and dungeons. There's some pretty clever abilities that are unlocked along the way. The story isn't bad either. I should go back to it and play again to get one of the other endings.

Changeling- Another decent VN. It's pretty straightforward, with not very many dialogue options. Mostly a lot of reading, but that's fine. I enjoyed it and got one character's ending and probably won't go back to see the other ones.

The Floor Is Jelly- I don't like the movement systems in this game. Stopped playing after 10 minutes.

Retrace- Seemed like a neat little adventure game, but there were several bugs. I got to a part where I had to get an item to proceed, one that I could have gotten earlier but didn't, and when I went back to get it I could no longer interact with it at all. Couldn't figure out how to proceed and gave up. Didn't bother starting over, it wasn't interesting enough for me to want to.

Mutiny Island- Ran like shit, all the text boxes were annoying, and nothing about the presentation was good enough to make me want to put up with it.

Miasma Caves- Very unpolished, kind of looks terrible, gameplay isn't interesting or fun.

Flux- I have no idea what you're supposed to be doing in this game at any point. It just seems completely arbitrary and random, nothing is explained.

Democratic Socialism Simulator- I got overthrown in a coup halfway through my second term and don't really care about trying again.

Catlateral Damage- Pretty fun. It's neat to just run around demolishing things, getting upgrades along the way and making yourself more efficient at knocking things onto the ground. Then you finish and the only option is to do it again with another set of random levels and I said no thanks and stopped playing.

Signs of the Sojourner- This one is a big shame. I like the idea of the gameplay, using a symbol matching card game thing to play out conversations with different people. But I hate how it handles the card management. You need specific symbols to match up with your conversation partner, as in this one person has access to Circles and Triangles so I need those cards in my deck to get a good result. After each conversation you gain a card that they used and have that card replace one of the ones in your deck. But if you run up against someone with, for example, Circles and Pentagons you're going to straight up fail all those conversations because you don't have any Pentagons. But that's alright failure isn't a big deal and after the conversation you can pick up their Pentagon cards and slowly replace the Triangles that they didn't have any of. Only now when you eventually go back to your hometown you'll fail all those conversations because your old friend doesn't have any Pentagons and now you don't have any Triangles. It's stupid, like learning another language made you forget your first one. Add in the fatigue mechanic which slowly adds cards to your deck that cannot match with anything and you're just set up to fail somewhere no matter where you go. I guess maybe this was intended but it feels like shit and made me not want to play anymore.

Headliner: NoviNews- It's ok. Curate a news outlet's articles and alter public opinion in a dystopian future. It's pretty short, but encourages multiple playthroughs by unlocking new characters to interact with and having a variety of endings, but I got my fill of it after two. Worth trying though.

I see that And Yet It Moves was added. I played it years ago and enjoyed it a lot, but never finished.
The mechanic of rotating the world is simple to grasp but I found it really hard to master since it's very counterintuitive, but despite that I still sank a lot of time into it. Also, for some reason I really like the theme tune.

So, Zone of Lacryma seems to be pretty good. Short shmup stages, with plot vignettes inbetween. If you enjoy shmups, give it a whirl.

Controls trip me up a bit, though. But that's a problem with me having hundreds of hours in other shmups with different control schemes.

See, this is exactly why I didn't put the number of games in the title. There are now 47 more games in the bundle than there was when I created this thread.

Satellite Repairman seems to be a fun little mini-game, but a bit too frantic to my sleep-deprived state of mind. Its very GOGOGO DO THIS DO THAT OH NO HERE COME THE MISSILES! I might try again when I've had some caffine.

Desktop Goose is... a Goose that lives on your desktop. He's an asshole. Entertaining for about half an hour, which is how long it'll take to see all of the things that he can do, which is not many.

Death and Taxes is an interesting concept, but I have absolutely no idea what impact I'm having on anything because there's really no feedback beyond the twitter-style headlines that let you know exactly how the guy you marked for death yesterday died. Hopefully it'll all come together at the end and explain just exactly what I've been doing all this time...
