a bunch of rich people stand in a circle and give each other handies
When I was a kid we went on a tour of Wall Street as part of a NYC trip (this was just before the days of online trading).
I vividly remember a bunch of old white guys in multicolor jackets screaming at each other, jotting stuff down, and throwing the pieces of paper at a dude in the middle of a large circular net.
"Uhhhmmm actually Dr. Who is the best superhero because he never lifts a hand in anger against literal monsters." I smugly say wearing a Harry Potter scarf, stroking my DVD boxset of The West Wing because it's so Goddamn 2009 that it hurts.
Ok, I'm heading to bed, but first a quick side note.
With the virus, we use the grocery pick-up service at our grocery store where we order online and then pick it up already bagged and waiting for us to minimize contact.
This weekend, the grocery store accidentally included an unopened angel food cake in our order. Not really worth trying to return an inexpensive cake during a pandemic, so we've still got it.
Basically, what I'm saying is I've got this whole cake just sitting here, and I'd love to have an excuse to just sit back and celebrate by eating cake all day tomorrow.
What if I idolize Dr. Who because he never does violence even against space Nazis and also it's 2009?
God what if next season they go back to the Trump guy from the spider episode and he’s dying from disease and the Doctor spends all episode hemming and hawing and eventually decides to save him horf hack barf
Manoeuvring an unrepentant villain into catching the disease they helped spread is absolutely something the Doctor would do.
in an ideal world i wouldn't want even people like donald trump to die
we don't live in an ideal world, and dying as a direct result of his own willfully ignorant egotism is the closest thing to justice that he is ever going to get within even spitting distance of
his death will relieve millions of people from the harm that he works to inflict on them every day. even taking into full account the tragedy of even a single person dying, his death will still be an overall net positive for the world, and there's nothing wrong with hoping for positive things
It’s amazing how this man cannot think of literally anyone but himself and how people perceive him. He’s grappling a deadly virus and his first instinct is keep up appearances.
Nothing will break his fantasy of the world being his personal story of greatness. He will die believing he is the protagonist, and everyone else is a villain or nameless extra.
Essentially, there is nothing saying that the number of shares you own can't go below zero into the negative numbers.
1. Borrow some stock you don't own
2. Sell it to someone else
3. Buy shares back at hopefully a reduced price, resetting your number of shares to zero
4. Pocket the price difference
Short selling is dangerous because if you own stock, the worst thing that could happen is it goes to zero and you just lose all the money invested. If you short stock, it can keep going up forever and you can lose infinity money from loan fees. It's basically like borrowing money from a loan shark and hoping the police bust up their criminal empire before you have to pay them back
Marty: The future, it's where you're going? Doc: That's right, twenty five years into the future. I've always dreamed on seeing the future, looking beyond my years, seeing the progress of mankind. I'll also be able to see who wins the next twenty-five world series.
Isn't the whole stock market basically a hands-free "game" now where humans no longer make decisions compared to company-specific AI that can make hundreds of transactions at once rapid-fire
What if I idolize Dr. Who because he never does violence even against space Nazis and also it's 2009?
You know that from 2005 to 2013 one of the Doctor's primary traits was that time he directly caused genocide right

The stock market is just the rich people feelings chart.
When Trump became tested positive, they collectively realized they are mortal and can get sick too, explaining the futures drop on the weekend. Now he's trying to fool them into thinking he's Okay Actually™ and they think maybe they too will overcome getting sick.
If he has a relapse it's going to be a glorious shitshow.

Hey
Hey
That was TWO genocides
Technically against two groups who were mounting a cavalcade of horrors in their eternity war through all of time and space and implied to have left countless civilizations destroyed in their wake, but still
The only reason I don't want him to die from covid is he deserves to die in a cage instead. If covid wants to cause some crippling and irreparable damage tho, well have at it.

I mean... sort of? Tons of portfolio value is still traded on human intuition, and there are a lot of things that humans have to do to keep the algorithmically maintained portfolios running, including manually shutting everything tf down when one of their algorithms finds itself in a doom loop where everything it does causes enough change to trigger it doing the same thing again, so it's not like rogue AI making insane decisions, it's just stupid humans with massively overinflated senses of their abilities making insane decisions. In fact describing it as "AI" is kind of a huge stretch in most cases.
Again, not really sure that this is meant to be reassuring.

Could be that but we have to deal with the fact that its also completely up to interpretation. The damn thing goes up and down a lot. It could be a response to Trump but it could be nothing or something else we don't even know about.
The only reason I don't want him to die from covid is he deserves to die in a cage instead. If covid wants to cause some crippling and irreparable damage tho, well have at it.
But he probably isn't and every moment he lives is more time for him to do meaningful damage to the people of this country.

Nobody is going to put him in a cage though, so let corona do its thing.
You have a much more optimistic outlook about the world than I do if you think there's a snowball's chance in hell that Donald Trump ever goes to prison
You have a much more optimistic outlook about the world than I do if you think there's a snowball's chance in hell that Donald Trump ever goes to prison
Like, if Biden wins and Trump survives: I am fully expecting Biden will, completely unprompted by the right, pardon any federal crimes Trump is found to have committed because he believes this will give him magic Political Capital beans which he can trade to McConnel for bipartisanship hugs.
I guess there is a slim chance Trump goes to state prison on state charges in NY but I'm not holding my breath on that either.
Non-violence in sci-fi TV morality episodes isn't centrism, it's optimism. Most problems in real life can be solved without violence. The West Wing's cursed neoliberalism is an entirely separate thing.

I'm so sick of people being so far up their own ass about realizing that stocks are feelings based money. Find a way to convert your totally original viewpoints on a rigged global financial scheme to money us paesents can use.
I’m reading this and while I understand that this is a movie, a system that allows even these basic functions to happen, divorced from the material reality of labor, is goddamn nightmares
It feels like goddamn horse betting, but with other people’s work

The only thing about it that I didn't know is that that shit was legal at the time they made that movie.
Hot damn.

Nothing. Nothing would ever get them to consider that possibility.
The last one is the best (and from the best Doctor), just a casual neck-snapping and "come along!" to his companion.

And it's not my birthday tomorrow.
Anyways, g'night all.

I thought I did but I just rewatched the scene and I have no idea.
EDIT: Here we are.

It specifically mentions gov't info, so I don't think its insider trading but Gov't related info
only on futures trades based on info from the government, although I don't know that should really make you feel a lot better.

There is literally an episode of an economy podcast that explains it. I unironically love Planet Money. It is an NPR podcast about Economics that I happily listen to two or three times a week.
Need some stuff designed or printed? I can help with that.
