if you two lls in english the word is probably a spanish loan and is probably pronounced with a y

Or Welsh and it's sort of like gently clearing your throat

Ehhhh I can think of a bunch of counterexamples, mostly words where it just ends in a double L though rather than an A or O sound on the end. You really just have to get a sense for when a word is spanish rather than english.
    Artillery
    Mill
    Hill
    Swill
    Hell
    Smell
    Pill
    Till
    Grill
Chinchilla? (although now I am wondering if chin-chi-ya might be more correct)

Poughkeepsie is the worst spelled word in the English language. It is pronounced in ways unlike it is spelled in two different ways!

Look you take an amerindian word surrounded by other towns with Dutch names as a British settler and see how well you do with it.

(I may have grown up in Poughkeepsie. Also notable is nearby Poughquag, pronounced "Poe-quay-g")

Using quay in a pronunciation guide is a special kind of trolling.

Nova Scotia has some doozies. I'm not about to make fun of Mi'kmaw and other First Nations place names, and really Kejimkujik is pronounced exactly as it's spelled, it just looks complicated at first.

but you get some that are Mi'kmaw names as transliterated by the French, that gets a bit more challenging, like Musquodoboit Harbour
