Poorly socialised and over-privileged white people learning that ill-considered actions can actually have consequences if you announce them to the entire world appears to be the ongoing theme for 2021.

Yep, those are the only two possible situations there.

I was going to make a joke about most of us, especially myself, being poorly socialized over privileged white dudes, but then a troll came and ruined the setup. Typical!

This is a great comic. It kind of reminds me of the Oliver sketch where the guy running for sherrif rambles of a list of all the weird and bad stuff he's done (ex "light" cannibalism) in an attempt to get ahead of social media.

I'm filled with regrets that I've never stormed government buildings while openly announcing my intent to murder elected representatives. I'm essentially a giant bubo filled with spite-pus on this forgone chance alone.

But which one was the troll or is this a both scenario?

I read the mini rant. Dude apparently had some built up stress that needed venting... That is what forum posting is for and now he has returned to being a well-adjusted human. I see a system that is working.

Yeah, that's what forum (and other forms of public publication) posting is for when you're someone who nobody knows.

To put it another way, if I'm the head of my school's PTA and I make a post on my own personal facebook about how shitty certain high profile parents, there's going to be repercussions if it gets out. And it won't matter one bit that everything I said was accurate.

Maybe it shouldn't be this way, but it is. And it's not because you're white and over-privileged, or a celebrity (but now I'm being redundant). It's just that when you're not white and not over-privileged, you tend to put a little more thought into "defensive living". That's like defensive driving but for everything you do in life. You think about how some people are just looking for an excuse to find fault and so you try to avoid giving them one. At least, you're statistically more likely to. There are always exceptions, and of course you are going to hear about the exceptions and not the ones that don't make waves.

All that said, this wasn't some grievous offense, and the apology seemed sincere. I see no reason not to move on from it after a little fun-poking.

TL;DR: What you said being correct and/or stressed doesn't let you off the hook for how you say something. Apologies are nice, though.

I'd rather not continue to talk about the (one) troll in this thread.

In panel one, a very large percentage of his face is forehead. I can't unsee it. :?

ResetEra is a gaming forum that was started by former members of NeoGAF after NeoGAF's owner banned political discussion to stop people on the forum from talking about accusations of sexual harassment that had been made against him.

I'm not really aware of their current reputation, but my understanding was that like NeoGAF they tended towards left-wing politics and they adopted a heavy-handed moderation policy out of concerns about harassment from 4chan and /r/KotakuInAction.

This was my take away. I'm not entirely sure it even ranks as an offence but I understand that some people have a low tolerance for opinions.

I think he is taking his lumps relatively well though. Supposedly his original goal was to "offer up a discussion starter on current issues the industry is facing." Has much of that happened? The resetera post has been locked so not much success there.

He held a funeral for his Tamogotchi, pretty sure mean cats aren't nearly capable of that level of attachment.

Honestly, it'd be kind of refreshing to hear, "These words and actions don't represent who I really am, because that was a lizard person doppelgänger who has been trying to kill and replace me."

So since I'm not here to make some social commentary that boils down to "any race other than mine = Bad" ...I'd like to state that I always suspected Sean Murray had something going on there, and honestly this was the least-worst option it could have been.

What did he actually do? A quick google suggested he said NMS and Cyberbpunk were snakeoil, which seems like a not particularly hot take all things given.

What is this I don't even.

Ahh, I should... click links. 100%. It wasn't the vague "these games are snake oil" that might be reasonably argued. Lots of direct attacks are too spicy.

I too would like to opine upon the foibles of a particular ethnic group as they relate to relatively recent political violence. Given the response to this post, I can only presume that such musings are considered kosher here. Still, I'd hate to commit a faux pas based on a misunderstanding, so I'd like to ask, is there an explicit policy here on how one is allowed to talk about people depending upon their race? If not, I'll be happy to join in on the fun.

Based on your comment, I'd suspect you're not going to have a great time here.

And it has nothing to do with the actual topic of your comment, either.
