Kong Skull Island is a great monster movie. I really enjoy all of the pulp archetypes. The fights are great, well lit, and easy to follow. Great miscellaneous creature design - the big ass wooden insect, the spider, and I really like the huge water buffalo.

    10/10

Shame about the monster design for the primary antagonists of the movie

I dunno I found the US military uniforms to be pretty period accurate.

I still can't quite 100% believe that they pulled the old Nippon steel, 100 times folded superior craftsmanship samurai sword trope completely straight.

Yeah, they didn’t really. It fit in with the stranded WWII stuff.

so last night, I saw a scene from Battleship the Movie based on the hit board game Battleship

when they fight the aliens, the alien ship shoots like, underhand grenade bombs that look like German potato mashers at the titular battleship

I have just now today realized that they weren't potato mashers

they were the fucking pegs you put on your board.

There is a sword in Kong Skull Island but nobody ever says anything about its relative strength or quality, I really don't know what y'all are getting at

A katana being in a movie isn't automatically that trope

and Japanese officers' katana were a real, issued thing (even if the vast majority of the ones that made it to the front lines were stamped steel garbage rods)

Reel Steel is a great movie.

It's a movie that has no business being as good and heartfelt as it is.

Is it rocky but with robots or is it punch-out but with robots

I would argue it's more punch-out but with robots

I mean there are two slo mo scenes of our heroes wielding the katana dispatching monsters with single swings and goes so far as to do a one handed toss from one to the other.

What does that have to do with "folded 100 times?"

Cool action movie guys did a cool guy action movie thing in this cool guy action movie.

If it had been a cutless from a crashed pirate ship, it would have had the exact same effectiveness.

"heartwarming" and "bonding" are two words I would never use to describe Gendo and Shinji's relationship.

Wasn’t the studio the one that demanded the voice over?

They are. And it was done deliberately poorly in an attempt to get them to not use it, hence some of the complaints in those notes.

Gonna be honest, if I ever got a performance evaluation that mean you would never hear from me again. I would be off living in the mountains making bad decisions about which mushrooms to forage and screaming at anyone who came into eyeshot until they went away again.

In this specific context we have him on record saying that he deliberately did a bad job because he thought the voiceover was, I believe he said, "A stupid fucking idea"
