I wonder if Mizu's in for a rude awakening in London since guns will be plentiful. Can't pull the trigger if you have no hands I suppose.

The Golden Globes released their noms, including Best Animated Picture. And who here is horribly surprised that Nimona was completely snubbed, but Disney saw both Elemental and Wish get nods?

Yeah, me either. Doesn't make it any less disgraceful or infuriating.

    Edit: The noms:

    “The Boy and the Heron”
    “Elemental”
    “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”
    “Suzume”
    “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”
    “Wish”

Wish be nominated for anything but a Razzie is proof enough.

Super Mario movie was bad enough I turned it off after 20 minutes.

    The

I imagine that having Branaugh made them want to have more time with the character, because dude never leaves scenery unchewed.

I hope they don't spend a lot of time in
    London
, since there's a lot Mizu's left undone back home.
    Especially Akemi and Taigen.

That would be fine by me. The flashback episode of S1 was maybe the best one.

Also, maybe the Western Animation thread isn't the right place to go to bat for the anime movies.

Keith David is so fucking good in anything and Amir Talai as Alastar has such a good voice and performance! (I might also have a teeny crush on Alastor, tbh. The old-timey twang and radio effect does it for me.)

It's really well done. It kinda bothered me that the credits included 8000 kickstarter backers and all the producers, but not a single animator though.

That'd be wild if so! 24 minutes of animation is a lot.

I just checked his kickstarter and in the FAQ for 'how long will this take' it said - "Probably a year and a half with multiple animation teams working on this."

Honestly the amount of people that have made broadcast quality animations that are over 20 minutes all by themselves can probably be counted on one hand. And even then you'd still need a sound designer and composer, unless you're the sort of virtuoso that also is a musical genius.

Back in the 80s, WPHL-TV had a tendency to use very poor quality prints of the cartoons they ran. Splices and film lines were common. Then there were crazy instances like... this...

Lord it’s like the broadcast equipment was eating the print live on air

The swallows are returning to the Mission of San Juan Capistrano. A hungry cat is watching them on radar. When the first bird nears, the cat disguises his mouth as a nest. However the swallow notices the cat's teeth and drops a jack-in-the-box in the nest, then watches as the cat's neck springs up and down. Then it paints a metal bird ornament to look just like itself. The cat greedily swallows the ornament, then the swallow uses a magnet to pull the cat around the yard, through the fountain, bumping up every rung of the ladder, across the clay tile roof, down to the ground, then up and down a flagpole a few times. The cat straps boards to his arms and tries to fly, but the swallow turns on an electric fan and blows him off the roof. The cat climbs the ladder and fires a shotgun at the bird, but the recoil propels him and the ladder backwards. The cat dons a Superman costume, but the bird hooks a spring between him and the well so when the cat leaps, he is pulled back into the drink. He finally catches the bird with some flypaper, but just then the rest of the swallows arrive. They swoop at him, drop tacks in his path, pelt him with light bulbs, and pick him up and carry him to the town line. He vows that he's not leaving town without a swallow, and he finally gets one... from the bar across the street.

Did you know that WB had two tuxedo cat-based characters voiced by Mel Blanc?

Extremely late to the Invincible discussion, but I think the main problem with the show is tonal whiplash. Unlike, say, The Boys, where the ultraviolence blends in with equally wild and extreme subject matter, Invincible is surprisingly down to Earth and has many quieter, contemplative scenes, with people reacting realistically to what's happening. Such as Mark
losing his virginity. In a show like this you'd expect them to go nuts, but no, it's awkward and sweet and Amber asked exactly the right questions. Very natural, nowhere near to over-the-top.

But then we suddenly transition to ultraviolence, largely for the sake of ultraviolence. Like, I didn't get the impression that Atom Eve fighting
    her rotting failed experiment siblings

was the natural conclusion of her journey in the special, it mainly felt like "what's the grossest possible thing we can shoehorn in here?" The
    horrible rotting
added nothing; it could have been something tonally similar and it wouldn't have yanked me out of that scene.

All this adds up to me being kind of intrigued by the proceedings but also disappointed.

That said I adore the Mauler Brothers, I hope they keep popping up.

    Finished Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.

That was certainly a thing. Confused thoughts in spoiler
It was a love letter to Scott Pilgrim but not written for anyone except the creators? When I first read the comic books it felt like a comic book series written just for me. Intensely gratifying but a weird business proposition to write something with a target demographic of 1. Then they made a movie! Just for me again. And it bombed. Because only I went to see it! Now it feels like the creators decided to really pare down the audience to just the absolute core of themselves.

I thought the twist in the 1st episode was brilliant. But then the 2nd episode is a meandering thing about the league of Evil Exes none of whom I care about? IT almost lost me there. There was just enough entertainment to get me to the final two episodes which are good, mostly. Scott and Ramona thinking that one of the exes is responsible for the AK field makes zero sense when there is a massively obvious protagonist available in Older Scott.

But ultimately this is a story about true love - literally and figuratively. The cartoon is a celebration of Scott Pilgrim and the plot is driven by future Ramona not giving up on their relationship. About the musical of the film within the cartoon series about a film of an adaptation of a comic book. A self indulgent exercise in reflecting on love at first sight, a critique of '00s wry detached irony, and another angle (do we need one?) on Scott ad Ramona's relationship.

    And I can respect that.

Overall did I enjoy it? Yes. Would I recommend anyone else watch it? No.
