Bobkins Flymo gave the OK for this new thread. We've been given a second chance. Take that how you will. Try not to fuck it up.
Now, the last thread was started 6 years ago, so I'd hope that any Other M stuff won't derail the thread and we can just focus on how much we like Metroid. Let's not go backwards, ok?

I think the art direction of Samus Returns was excellent and I hope future games use it as a starting point. Slim down the suit or make it more tank-like, I'm good with either.

Seriously though, I wouldn't mind a game where you swapped between suits like beam modules; certain enemies requiring heavier armor/firepower & others requiring more mobility/counters afforded by lighter mobility or something to deal with.

I used to borrow Metroid on NES from my cousin way back in the day. We knew about the Justin Bailey code, but thought that the “girl” character was different from the main “guy” character. My cousin even told me about that one door we couldn’t get to in Brinstar (needed to bomb jump) and if you went through it, you’d see a special ending with the guy and the girl on a beach together.
Any one else has crazy theories or stories they heard or read as a kid about Metroid?

On the one had, having to choose the right suit for the job sounds fun. On the other hand, it seems like it would become tedious to have to swap between them all the time.
I think it would depend on the controls. Switch beams in Prime was fast and easy, switching beams in Super Metroid felt a pain.
Was there ever a reason in Super to switch beams? Aside from Ice beam to make platforms or fight Metroids anyway.
I like the idea of having the basic suit (an armored suit, not the body glove 0 suit), then a heavy armor suit (varia), a high mobility suit (maybe this one can be the 0 suit) and a focused firepower suit (like the heavy arms gundam and regular armor had a baby), and then the inevitable final suit power up that combines the different benefits into one suit without the drawbacks. I would hope the game environments and enemies would be designed so that using suit X is the easiest way, but not the only way to do a thing. In my perfect game, the effects of the power ups are also different depending on the suit your using.
You can face tank the baddy with the armor suit, but you can also use the mobility suit to dodge the attacks, or you can use the firepower suit to (hopefully) take the baddy out before it gets too many attack cycles on you.
Use the mobility suit to get through the gates before they close, or use the firepower suit to blow the gates down. Maybe armor suit w/ speed booster to smash through the gates?

For the general player? Not really. Depending on your beam, you could make that spinny shield which was not super useful. I imagine speedrunners have utilized them in some fashion to break the game and shave 0.002 seconds from their time though.

Suit switching could be like chugging estus in dark souls, you can do it any time, but it takes long enough that an enemy can hit you if you’re not careful. Could be a neat sort of stance change—better for a third person game or a traditional side scroller though.

Okay, the last thread was over 100 pages. Surely it was determined at some point y can't Metroid Crawl? so somebody catch me up on that please.
If I recall correctly, Samus doesn't crawl because the 8 bit NES couldn't do a crawling sprite that didn't look terrible, so they crunched her up into a ball. OG Gameboy also couldn't do it so they kept the ball. By the time the consoles had the space/power to do crawling that didn't look terrible the ball form was already an iconic mechanic in the series.

I'm iffy on whether we'll see Prime 4 or not this e3. It's been awhile since they announced they were starting over, but that doesn't mean it's necessarily ready to show yet. But I dunno, they may feel obligated to put something together for fans who have been waiting so long now.
I do think that rumored 2D Metroid is real tho. I really hope we see that.
When I was a kid I had an idea for a Metroid cartoon that was just Samurai Jack but with Samus. I even wrote a script for the pilot on a Windows 98 with full on “EXT. NIGHT, ZEBES” type stuff going on. I wish I could read it now. That me was a good, dumb kid.
I think the idea was Samus would be a teenager, still living with the Chozo. She’d not so secretly sneak off to fight space monsters (I didn’t know they were ‘pirates’) in an ancient suit she found.
The supporting cast included her adopted owl dad, an owl grandma, an owl that was suspicious of her, two alien cops, Captain Falcon as a bumbling yet famous bounty hunter, probably a heart of gold thief (space Catwoman), Ridley as Lex Luther if he was a dragon, Mother Brain as Cthulhu, and probably an evil mirror Samus.
My big twist would be ending the first season with the invasion of Zebes, and have the final season be Samus near silently Ramboing it up to save her adopted planet. Owl dad would die in her arms saying something about with great power comes responsibility.
Guess it’d end with Zebes being destroyed as per the game, but maybe with a bunch of chozo and space animals saved in her ship somehow.

Looked like it's by the Samus Returns devs, and the counterattack thing is coming back? Mixed feelings about this. I hope I like it more than Returns. At least it's more 2D Metroid.
Like I'm gonna buy it day 1 don't get me wrong. I am hype as fuck. Just not fully confident I'll love it as much as Fusion/Zero Mission/Super, but eh that's life.
I really hope the plot is about being on the run/fighting back against the feds after the events of Fusion, the suit design and it being Metroid 5 clearly puts it after Fusion in the timeline.

The last thread was six years old. It did enough crawling for Samus.
