most submersibles don't even have that for facilities, because they're intended to be underwater for less than 8 hours instead of a gilligans island situation

theres a lot to dunk on about this, but the controller and lack of toilet are both totally within the norm for actual real person engineering

Everyone is so focused on the video game controller, how it's so crazy that it's steered with a gamepad wooooah!

And like, that's not crazy at all IMO? Makes sense to me! If you can safely map every function to a gamepad, go for it.

I think it's a valid critique - dude's boat has fuckall for a bathroom. Really speaks to a total lack of political inclination. He was clearly not cut out for public office with a toilet like that

Dumbest way to die on that toilet would be someone installing a "bidet" that connects to outside the sub for natural pressurized water

Man I know I'm having a fun time dunking on this idiot, and to a lesser extent the three other people who didn't have anything to do with the design but climbed, willingly, into the Death Dinghy, but also I do gotta keep reminding myself a 19 year old kid was on board and is now dead.

    That shit really isn't funny.

Oh yeah for sure someone read The Lean Startup and much like how one thinks Ayn Rand is brilliant, found TLS universally applicable to all new product design despite the author Eric Ries being super clear at numerous points in the book “THIS METHOD DOES NOT APPLY TO PHYSICAL ENGINEERING PRODUCTS WHERE FAILING FAST MEANS INJURY AND DEATH”

In actual news about tragedies on the high seas, a German sea captain faces 20 years in jail for saving migrants at risk of drowning in the Mediterranean Sea
Pia Klemp, one of just a handful of female boat captains, warned that “sea rescue missions have become criminalised” as she vowed to fight her case all the way to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

She is the latest victim of the far-right Italian government’s crackdown on desperate migrants trying to reach Europe by sea, which has seen those engaging in humanitarian rescue missions charged with “assisting illegal immigration.”

Ms Klemp captained the Iuventa, along with the Sea Watch III rescue ship, and her efforts have saved more than 1,000 migrants from a possible watery grave while attempting the perilous crossing of the Mediterranean.

She explained that her actions are lawful and protected by the 1982 United Nations Law of the Sea.

According to its article 98, “every state shall require the master of a ship” to “render assistance to any person found at sea in danger of being lost” and “proceed with all possible speed to the rescue of persons in distress.”

It is kind of insane at how easy it is to walk into a random church in Italy and see some really prominent and fancy memorial to a WW2 soldier, go look up info and find out that, no, he was not some brave resistor or someone who fought in the foreign legions against fascists, he was one, through and through.

It's actually his granddaughter, who is also the niece of Sophia Lauren.

But she is definitely from the same tree/lamppost, been "centre-right" her whole political career and her husband was tried for soliciting sex with a 14 year old a few years ago.

I remember once swimming in the ocean, about 2 weeks offshore in about 3km of water. That was a spooky feeling

Everything I know about the children of millionaires makes it hard for me to feel much for the 19 year old, unfortunately.

  • NeveronNeveron HellValleySkyTree SwedenRegistered User regular
Also, I don't know how I feel about calling him a child? Dude's 19, that's an adult. Not a very experienced adult, but an adult. There's no need to infantilize him just because he's trapped at the bottom of the ocean and going to die within 24 hours.

Still sucks that he's going to die a horrible dead, I guess, but give him some respect.

  • JuggernutJuggernut Registered User regular
I mean, sure. But also 19 is still a baby. Kid could've had a decent head on his shoulders and done something worthwhile. I don't know.

I'm not gonna laugh and say his death was cool and neat. It's fuckin tragic. Everybody else on that bucket is fair game.

But I ain't gonna think a kid dying is ever funny.

  • NeveronNeveron HellValleySkyTree SwedenRegistered User regular
    The 19-year-old: Pretty sad
Stockton Rush: deserves every degree of hellfire this ironic fate gets him
Billionaire and hundred-millionaire: eh, eat the rich
Titanic expert: Kind of sad, but dude seems like he was emotionally prepared for dying in a Titanic dive. I think he'd maybe prefer the instant death of hull failure to the slow death by asphyxiation they're facing, though.

Not that this makes it funny again, and take it with a grain of salt like everything else flying around about this, but allegedly he's already been convicted of stalking and harassment once before and either vocalized a desire or planned to carry out a shooting at a music festival prior to this going down
