I can't seem to find the demo on Live. Do I have to go through some hoops to get it?

So I don't actually have a 360 right now or anything to play Vesperia on so I haven't been following it but I can expect to not hear any voices in skits when I eventually do play it right? That's my favorite part of the game really, the absolute dead silence in the funniest scenes in the game. I do have a Wii though so I'll definitely be playing ToS2 and I just can't wait for the dead air that game will have.

Too bad ToS2 wasn't unpopular enough to have Nintendo handle the localization, then it would be fully voiced and awesome.

If it was that unpopular, I don't think it would be localized at all. You know, like those other ten Tales games we've never gotten.

    That's what I'm bitter about.

    What?

It's likely that the skits won't be voiced. But, uh, yes, there is going to be voice acting in general.

Ever play ToP on the GBA?

That was a Nintendo release as Namco didn't want to bother bringing it over here.

ToS2 will have voice acting, whether or not they bothered to do the skits is of course another kettle of fish entirely.

Why, I have no idea what you're talking about. Why would I be bitter at the fact that some scenes that are really funny that were voiced in the japanese version aren't voiced in the american version because Namco Bandai is cheap? I'm glad that they also seem to refuse to acknowledge that japanese versions exist so they don't even let the japanese voices play during the skits so at least we hear something. No, I'm not bitter at all.

My thing is I always have a character I really like and I want to hear more of them but lots of the dialogue in the game is in the skits where everyone should be voiced but aren't.

Preaching to the choir here, Gilder. I'm just over it. I think I lost all anger over that when SC III came out to PS2 exclusively. it really did a good job of redirecting my Scamco anger.

Maybe they listened to the complaint and decided to do something about it. I doubt it though. They've been too damn cheap to liscense out any of the musical openings for more recent releases.

They are also completely ignoring the DS Tales games, both the bad one and the really awesome one, but that's a whole new level of hate.

"I've got a great idea guys! Let's bring out some shitty side story Tales game on the platform with shitty sales! Also lets put out one of our all time best Tales games on the self same system, except lets only release it in Europe! Brilliant!"

    It's a moot point, anyway.
1UP: In Tales of Symphonia and Tales of the Abyss, the skits in the North American versions were not voiced. Will that be the case with Vesperia as well, or will the North American version be fully voiced this time?

YH: They'll be voiced this time. We wanted to do it previously. Putting priority on the release date resulted in it not happening, but this is the ten year anniversary and we really want it to be the same as the Japanese version.

Not voicing the skits isn't as bad as not bothering to voice the entire second half of the game (and yes, I know people hate Legendia, but I liked it, and it was fucking idiotic that they pretty much completely bailed on the second half of the game)

OK, I get it now. In ToS it did strike me as odd that those skits didn't have any voices (they seemed like an annoyance since they were silent.) But I think it would sound awful if they had japanese voices, that would be weird (coming from someone who hasn't played another Tales game.)

As for japanese voices in skits, I don't really want them either but I wanted something instead of near silence. Maybe they should've just not lowered the music volume since without voices it served no point.

Well, skits were voiced (all 10 of them or however many. Legendia didn't have nearly as many as the other games), but they cut voicing from the "Character Quest" section of Legendia. Which...was the entire second half of the game.

Allegedly they thought the character quests were optional side areas and so didn't realize their importance.

It was just a little fucking weird. I mean the game "ends", and then you've got a bunch more story to play, but suddenly no one is voiced anymore.

Honestly, I kinda hate Namco Bandai these days. Between their refusal to bring the best Tales games to the US (at least, by all accounts of people I know who've played Rebirth and ToD2), goofy shit like not bringing ToS to the PS2 in the US (granted, I played the GC version, but it still seems pretty weird to not bring it over with a much larger installed base), their handling of DLC on Katamari, etc.

My problem with Namco's handling of the Tales series is that they seem to expect it to be SO MUCH BIGGER than it is. Like, they seem to print a massive amount of copies (completely based on my STILL being able to go and find brand new copies of Legendia/Abyss) and then go "well, it didn't sell like a Final Fantasy game so no one wants it so we'll just not bother with it" until enough people rage at them and go "uh, no, we definitely want this" for them to try again.

If they just had smaller print runs, ala Atlus, they'd probably be pretty decent successes.

Has anyone here attempted playing Tales of Innocence in Japanese? I can read kana but not a whole lot of kanji and I NEED to play this game because the charatcer with the pistols and the one with the rifle+bayonet especially look awesome to play as.

They also don't seem to do much to promote the titles, and make some really bad design decisions (like the overworld in pretty much every Tales game since they started making PS2 titles)

It feels like with just a little more polish, and better advertising, they could have a very successful series over here, but instead they just half-ass it and wonder why no one buys their games.

The only game in the series I've actually played is Phantasia (GBA). I got about halfway through it before getting stuck. I thought the system of events that would open up after you hit some sort of trigger was pretty random and unintuitive, and I spent a lot of time just wandering around.

Before I quit, I had hit a point where the walkthrough said that the next thing was that you could now go to place X, except it wouldnt let me. Talked to nearly everyone on the planet once or twice, and quit the game.

Yup, you can play as any of the other three party members by putting them in Yuri's position on the menu. Doing so as Repede caused me to die a very painful death against the boss, since I wasn't adjusted to his play style, having used Yuri the rest of the time.

I guess Skills are Vesperia's version of Symphonia's Ex Gems and Abyss' Capacity Cores, only done in a Final Fantasy 9-esque way. Some appear to be obtained automatically by leveling up, others tied to weapons.

Edit: Oh. You can actually use Overlimits in the demo. Huh.

Yeah, it would make sense that you can't walk around as Repede, since he cannot speak to NPCs. And I still don't get why he uses a dagger when he, you know, has teeth and claws.

The demo goes on for a few more battles, plus a cutscene. As soon as you would exit to the world map towards a village Karol mentions in the cutscene, the demo ends with a "Coming Soon" message.

It wasn't really any fun. Looked nice, but... I couldn't work out what the fuck was going on. The battles were boring and the boss was full of rape.

The voice acting in the second part of ToS was so embarassing I stopped playing the game entierly. Really, the writing is so just so cheesy and the VA was so over the top. I didn't want my neighbors hearing it.

ToD2 has major story issues. The combat is spell-casting oriented (a plus for me, but a certain minus for almost everybody else), the VA is good and the skits are well written, but the story is a complete disaster. The characters are also flat-out completely uninteresting, with Kyle (the protagonist) being outright irritating. The biggest problem is that the game is completely unable to come out of the shadow of ToD and becomes its own game.

ToR is a much better game. However, the second part of the game was just really preachy. I also feel that there's a certain community that may get a little too much enjoyment out of this game. More than anything ToR has a lot more humor than other games in the series. It's more a light comedy than a serious drama. At times the game will even start making fun of itself.

I'll never really understand the fandom around ToS. The writing is pretty much rock-bottom. Sometimes the game can be pretty funny, which is a plus, but the plot felt really random to me. The art style is also simply really bland (the character design is good though). I just don't get what people think is so great about this game. Then again, I think that ToA is the best entry in the series by far (followed by ToDr).

While I like ToS decent enough(though I do agree ToA is the better game), I think the reason it gets so many props is because it was the Tales series first jump into 3D(at least the first one to be released in America if one of the other games did it first...but I think I'm right). It's kind of like FF7, Final Fantasy existed before seven but it didn't become popular until seven.

I've never been a huge fan of ToS. It was fun to play, but I didn't care for the story or characters at all. I felt the same way about ToA, except I didn't even have fun playing it...it felt like a game that belonged on a more powerful system, or in the hands of a more capable dev team.

Personally, I'm all about ToE, followed by ToD and ToP, the rest I can stick in just about any order behind those.

Ah come on...ToL was like nostalgia for ToE/ToD fans...I know the plot was a jumbled mess and magic was only good for combo'ing but it wasn't that bad.
No, it really was that bad. Because, you know. Shirley.

And also everyone else in the game.

    Ah yes...good point...though I still like Norma...>_>

Sounds like somebody never played Tales of Destiny!

The only game so bad that they had to remake it completely from the ground up with as little left of the original as possible.

Seriously, what the fuck was Namco thinking? You go through like, 7 characters and 10 dungeons before you fight the first boss. And I hope you like the generic swordsmen, 'cause that's pretty much every useable combat character!
