Honestly, all of WotC's representation efforts feel very strange/late-stage corporate rainbow marketing.
Per the author's statements, they killed Nissa/Chandra off due to plans for her as the face of some Netflix adaptation, and he implied what he wrote was more about closing the door on Nissa and less about closing the door on Chandra being bisexual. But then that falls through, and in the Innistrad stories Chandra is all-but-explicitly shown to be crushing on Adeline. Then they confirm an entirely new lesbian couple (and have them kiss), along with printing a ton of very gay artwork and probably breaking their normal rules on how close to implied nudity they can put on a card with Bearscape, but appear to have made this article run only in whitelisted countries, as arbitrary countries in South/Central America seem to be unable to view it. There's honestly no way to read all of this and not think that WotC/Hasbro is a house divided on all this stuff to some degree.
my general stance on most things like this is I don't believe any big corporation really cares much about anything beyond what is profitable, and sometimes they decide that appearing to be "allies" would be good for business
that said, I also try to remember that while the corporation as a whole doesn't care, some of the people working there absolutely do, and I appreciate and acknowledge their efforts to push representation and progress through the various levels of management. Wizards of the Coast/Hasbro absolutely has a pretty mixed track record on this stuff, but Stephanie Cheung and the artists she worked with to make this happen did good work.
and also I fuckin want that Alesha print, that is so good
i broadly think that while wotc is a very mixed bag, this product specifically looks like the kind of product that exists when corporate gets out of the way of the queer folk making it
the most corporate meddling involved looks like "you gotta have a sol ring"

The drop is conspicuously missing from specific countries, and the Arena sleeves are only of cards that aren’t explicitly queer. Well, Alesha is one, but you wouldn’t know right away it was depicting trans people as a casual observer, and Mana Confluence which has rainbow colors.
So you still got that cynical corporate vibe to it in places, which makes it just…kinda sad this is one of the better handlings of Pride by a corporation.

The special guest here is someone I was just thinking about as "possible compleated PW". I don't think they'll go that route, but it was amusing to watch them interact.
This is the second packaging decrease, right? Earlier drops had the cards in a plastic wrapper, inside a plastic cuff attached to a cardboard ring, inside a cardboard box, wrapped in tissue paper, inside another cardboard box, which was wrapped in shrink wrap, and shipped inside another cardboard box. It was very excessive if you wanted to, you know, actually play with the cards but probably made the people who were stashing these things to sell someday on eBay happy.
More recent drops got rid of some of the plastic and reduced the size of the cardboard boxes, but there is still a lot. And I’ve had a drop with duplicate/missing cards which you wouldn’t discover unless you rip everything open.
New Capenna limited has been super fun so far, but I've had almost no luck straying from Cabaretti/Brokers. I've had a couple of 4C drafts and one Maestros draft go well, but it feels like there's pretty overwhelming power in the WUG commons and the UW/WG uncommons that becomes a pretty tall mountain for sacrifice/connive shenanigans to overcome.
Yeah, red suffers blitz being iffy in limited - getting a new card is good, but in an untuned deck and not keeping board presence... oof. Good removal of course, and Strangle is just beautiful to have there. Blue has some good stuff too... but the problem Obscura has is that so much of the best connive is already in white or blue anyways so Brokers can just pick it up for the consistency it offers.
Also, I'm a big fan of Riveteers Initiate - threatening deathtouch is great (Obscura initiate is still the best of the cycle of course, good luck racing that).
I’ve been away from the game for over a decade, was thinking about getting back in only to find my local FNM dumped standard and does modern now.
Ugh, I don’t want to have to think about such a massive card base.
Don't. At that point trying to work from scratch is going to be overwhelming and not very useful. There are plenty of sites that will give you a list of viable decks and that's still going to be a very wide swath.
I would say Modern is, generally, a safer investment to get into than Standard, it just also costs four times as much. But if/when you do cash out, you recoup ostensibly 100% of the cost, potentially quite a bit more.
Of course, this isn't even worth considering if you don't like Modern. Alternatively, Commander is just as good an investment, but you can get in at basically any price range and still have fun.

i would be pretty wary about looking at any magic format as an investment where you could potentially recoup costs, though. it's a very unhealthy way of looking at your finances that buys more into propaganda about the game than actual facts. as format-redefining sets like modern horizons become more common and they become more willing to ban aggressively for format health, there are no shortage of very, very competitive cards or decks that would not fetch anywhere near the price you paid for them years ago. decks are filled with competitive cards from the last few years like kamigawa lands, esper sentinel, ragavan, or companions
the only investments in mtg are terrible mythics that commander players love. did you know that that fucking terrible mythic green dragon from the D&D set is like 30 bucks now?

People are trying to make it (and the "lands tap for treasures" artifact) a thing in RG treasures with a Magna package, but that deck seems extremely mediocre.

I mean the fetchland reprint dropped the cost of a Modern landbase a huge amount and put all the price onto Ragavan.
Ah. Had a great commander game last night. Ended by taking out the King Darien player by using Satoru Umezawa to ninjitsu in Atemsis, the All-Seeing (Commander is Kamiz, so Satoru is a natural inclusion) to inflict an automatic loss (and deal with their whole damage>tokens>heal up). Atemsis got removed before I could use it to axe the Lathiel player, so I flipped over the card I'd stolen from their deck way back at the start of the game using Thief of Sanity - Angel of Destiny. A couple turns of beating on them (and using Strionic Resonator) let me clear 55 life and make them lose despite their 100+ life and Boon Reflection stuff going on.
That lost me the angel, but they had the board state to keep me from using it if things continued... the remaining player was using Kotori and tried to stabilize with Dance of the Manse to reanimate their whole graveyard. Unfortunately that made a lot of 4/4 creatures so I dropped Nightmare Unmaking to exile them all (due to hand size, I had one creature on my side survive), and he called it (empty hand versus plenty in hand and unblockable beaters once I bring Kamiz back... again).
I love long games that go back and forth like that, and it's really satisfying killing three people three different ways. Tivit with Strionic Resonator out is a complete monster though - generating a giant pile of treasure and clues every turn (the clues helped me get my hand full for Atemsis and keep digging up answers to stay on top).

there are some ridiculous bombs running around. Without immediate enchantment removal, I don't know how you beat something like Rabble Rousing. The Hideaway part doesn't even matter, it's the insane snowball of tokens. Even when you're not combining it with something like Devilish Valet or Venom Connoisseur, like my last two opponents.

Fight Rigging is almost as bad, and the less said about Brokers Ascendancy the better.
The fact that one deck could run all three? Not helping.

Have you seen the full version?
She's absolutely helping a trans man wearing a binder.
EDIT: In the replies she said she'll be making prints available.
With their bear hands.

My money's still on Dovin. Yes, I know he's dead.

More like relieved. They don't need to pay $40 for 8 cards!
(also you have two months to purchase it)
Secret Lairs getting new, greatly reduced packaging.

in general i would describe the last few limited formats as "fun in spite of the colour imbalances at play"

Sadly, the closest way to play standard reliably here seems to be about three hours away.
