The Assassination of Twitter by the coward Elon Musk
HacksawJ. Duggan Esq.Wrestler at LawRegistered Userregular
Elon Musk is a crazy, rich person who brought a kitchen sink into Twitter as a lame attempt at a joke. Oh, and it looks like he's going to be CEO of Twitter by 5 P.M. on Friday, so there's that.
I don't really use the blue bird site but for the tweets curated by folks like y'all. That being said, this seems... well, broadly speaking bad for the world at large. I dunno. Feels like Neal Stephenson is lazily writing out alternate Snowcrash plotlines while taking a morning dump.
I am hopeful that this will both kill a toxic social media company and also personally cost Elon musk 10s of billions of dollars that he will not recover.
I think it'll probably be worse for Twitter employees than it will for Twitter users, but we'll see. The shitty thing is that it's not like the previous CEOs of Twitter have been paragons either, so he'll have to fuckin' really go under the bar for anyone to notice significant changes for the worse
or maybe he'll make everyone follow him on there and remove the block button. who fucking knows
(If the tweets don't load, the Twitter CCO at 9:30AM/this morning said she had a great discussion with Elon yesterday and was excited for the future; she was fired 12 hours later/two hours ago, in a sweep that included the CEO, CFO, head of policy, and a few other executives)
I do believe that he gives a shit about Twitter advertisers, is the thing, because those people will give him money. That's possibly the only thing I believe he cares about.
I'd say it's an interesting coincidence that this recall was announced the same day, but Tesla products are getting recalled for being unsafe all the goddamn time.

I heard the news and deleted my account this morning.
Boy, every time I pulled out my phone and reflectively checked twitter and it asked if wanted to make an account and I could say, "Nope. I really don't."
So freeing.

the only upside of this I can think of is apparently both Musk and Twitter are in huge debt-holes because of this and other things, and... maybe something will happen as a result of that, I dunno if debt even matters to rich people

I deleted the app the day the twitter board accepted his offer and have not logged on since. I'm trying to decide if I should login (increasing the daily active user metric) to delete my account, or just keep on keepin' on

Generally speaking, it does not. Most of their wealth is in assets and such anyway, with comparatively little liquidity. They just borrow (potentially shitloads) of money when they want to buy something, at extremely low interest because they have very valuable assets to leverage. So they're routinely 'going into debt' until the ridiculous assets earn all that and more back.

If your main worry is metrics, the data path of "logged in just to immediately delete their account" is much worse for Twitter than "account hasn't been accessed for a while but still technically exists"

Maybe the data on deletions might balance out the daily using?

As I said in the older thread, I keep my twitter circle small and I block often. I'll see how it look after a few weeks if it's still worth it, but I believe I'll last longer than musk.
I'd say it's an interesting coincidence that this recall was announced the same day, but Tesla products are getting recalled for being unsafe all the goddamn time.
It's amazing that this thing even exists but man, what does it say about the company culture that they keep putting designs out that exceedingly do not meet federal regulation
Like, I can't assume Musk gave a shit about the Cyberquad, and yet the thing was designed with a complete disregard for standards even without him breathing down necks and demanding More Bulletproof Surfaces
Either they're hiring inexperienced people or they're so rushed to market they're building first and doing quality assurance reviews never
if you think elon musk is uniquely evil or dangerous compared to everyone else who owns websites, you are buying into the same cult of personality that his fans do

I feel like maybe I don't follow random website... Uhhh... Salesforce as closely as I follow tesla, but tesla has a half dozen lawsuits going against them for racism another half dozen for sexism and an additional half dozen for their false advertising about the full safe driving mode and customer/worker safety.
Plus, being a billionaire means you are evil so being a the world's billionairyest billionaire makes you worse than the rest
I'm pretty much at the point of never linking to twitter.
If something interesting has happened there, I'm using the window's snip tool, and just pasting that.
If there's an actual non twitter url, I'm posting that.
I ain't gonna judge anyone who keeps using twitter, a lot of people depend on it for staying connected with their friends and similar worthy reasons, but jeeze I really hate that fucker and I'm sure he's gonna use it for evil ends if he doesn't drive it into the ground first. He doesn't have to be uniquely awful to be awful. Hell, the fact that so many people depend on twitter is why it hurts so much to see that asshole take it.
if you think elon musk is uniquely evil or dangerous compared to everyone else who owns websites, you are buying into the same cult of personality that his fans do
He's not anything different no, but he also just became the CEO and sole owner of a website that seems to have an outsized impact on public discourse and has stated his intent on rolling back their efforts on combating disinformation and other shit housery.
It's pretty reasonable to be worried about all this right now
Sure I'm not gonna begrudge anyone for going "god i just hate elon musk so much!" I'm just pretty rolling my eyes at dooming like "This is an alternate Snowcrash plotline", like come on. The main problem isn't that it's worse, the problem is that the ways it's bad now are ways that you were paying attention to prior to this, where people weren't paying attention to bad twitter things before.
if you think elon musk is uniquely evil or dangerous compared to everyone else who owns websites, you are buying into the same cult of personality that his fans do
I don't think he's uniquely evil, but with the cult of personality he's developed I think he is potentially more dangerous than the standard rich asshole behind the scenes.
his intent on rolling back their efforts on combating disinformation and other shit housery.
what efforts
Well they flagged any link ending in .cn as nefarious Chinese state media, even if the link was not real, and that was kind of funny for a bit

Anyway Twitter has been going out of it's way to platform straight up Nazis for years now, and calling someone a terf is more likely to get you suspended than virulent transphobia, so like...
It's all bad, but it's possible to curate the experience where your aren't actually wading through shit. Provided you don't have too many followers, anyway. Elon Musk owning it doesn't really move the needle.
They banned Jordan Peterson for intentionally misgendering Eliot Paige. A person Elon Musk is extremely likely to have unbanned, and who extremely should never be listened to by anyone ever.
his intent on rolling back their efforts on combating disinformation and other shit housery.
what efforts
I get that twitter has always fallen far short of acceptable moderation, but I expect the site under musk to go from halfhearted ineffective auto-moderation to an active propaganda tool

yeah but he still has a lucrative speaking gig on ben shapiro's website and gets to go around doing sold out talks all the time still
The previous owner was all buddy buddy with Musk and had the same ideas, so I really don't see anything except for some monetization attempts being implemented changing.

if we're lucky musk will get bored and wander away without doing anything, but he's so personally invested in using twitter I think he'll try to fuck it up himself

Musk basically already had an about face about his free speech absolutism because it turns out most brands don't want to advertise on the daily stormer.
He's for sure going to do some dumb idiot stuff, but I don't really see it being that big a deal.

And Twitter is supposed to stop that how? They banned Trump and we stopped getting newspapers breathlessly reporting his tweets. They're pretty aggressive about banning or marking links back to Russian state propaganda sites which is rather important given that Russia is trying to genocide Ukraine. They tagged or blocked sites about the dumb Kracken bullshit. Argue about what more they sound be doing but acting like they haven't taken steps that have had a positive impact on the day to day use of the site, steps that the new owner is explicitly interested in stopping, is just being willfully ignorant

I cannot see this as anything other than an attempt to kill it. I don't know if we have any spaces like that left.
I hope Musk regrets this heavily.
