The National Audubon Society announced on Wednesday that it would retain the Audubon name, despite calls to drop the reference to the 19th century naturalist and painter who was also a slave owner and vocal opponent of abolition.
The renowned bird conservation organization, which was named for John James Audubon, said it made the decision after “a lengthy process to examine its name in light of the personal history of its namesake.”
The Bird Union, the National Audubon Society’s staff union, slammed the board of directors’ decision on Wednesday as displaying a lack of interest in “following through on their commitments to cultivate a fair and equitable workplace.”
“Their decision to double down on celebrating a white supremacist and to continue to brand our good work with his name actively inflicts harm on marginalized communities, including members of our union who for too long have been excluded from the environmental movement,” the union said in a statement.

I went back to sleep, but was completely convinced that I was actually awake and that construction vehicles had started tearing down my apartment building from the other end and I was panicking until noticed that the carpet pattern in the hallway was different and realized it was a dream and woke myself up, which was also weird because I kinda just floated up through the ceiling and had a sensation of returning to my head.
While quarantining myself, I’ve been learning the chords to a Tim Minchin song for piano and mandolin (mandolin is tuned exactly like a violin, so it’s a natural crossover instrument for me). On Sunday, I was just fumbling around and couldn’t really play it at tempo. This morning, I was able to play along with my practice track.
